Those are your partiers who drink in aims to have a night-to[-not]-remember, not in aims to calm their nerves and chill out which can be done naturally instead. I guess you can argue that partying could be a form of self-medicating your stress though.

I find it more disturbing when people want these psychos to continue being a threat to society. Taking serial killers out of society (people who usually revert back to their old ways) doesn't make society any safer? That doesn't make sense. I hope you're just talking about personal retributions rather than doing something for a greater good.

Now this I can definitely agree on. If you are a pregnant smoker it doesn't only come down to "It's my body - I can do what I want!" which is the main reason why I support the choice to smoke. But in this case, it's not just your body - it is the baby's too.

The only people being charged are the ones who are guilty beyond a reasonable shadow of a doubt with a unanimous decision. Not perfect but as good as it's gonna get. If you're arguing in fear of some flaws in the justice system, then I can see where you're coming from. Personally, I believe that it's better to let one innocent man free than punish ten guilty people, but in the context of serial killers there is more to the story. If you let ten guilty serial killers go free, then you are causing more potential harm to society than making the decision to kill one innocent man would cause. I know that there isn't much we can do about how we were brought up. However, that is no reason to keep these people around the innocent people. Let's stop the problem at the root instead. You say that molesters are that way because of others molesting them. Well, why not do our best to rid the world of molesters altogether that way it doesn't continue? I think the welfare of society as a whole will always be much more important than the welfare of one person - this person being a criminal, at that. That may be true. It's not humane - but that doesn't mean it is unnecessary. If someone tried killing you, would you just stand there submissively and refuse to defend yourself because you think killing, under any context, is inhumane? Where did that come from? :? Worst drug ever? In terms of the death rate maybe, but that's only because there are so many people using it. Heroin and coke are much worse for you than cigarettes but you don't hear about as many people dying from them since there are way more smokers than there are heroin/coke users.

Do they actually like the taste? No, the drinkers I mentioned always complain about the taste and only drink for the effect. I didn't even know it was possible to enjoy the taste until I came across an alcohol topic on TIF. I will say that some alcoholic beverages taste a lot better than others, but I think the idea of intoxication comes before the taste or else people who claim to drink without even caring about the effect would probably be drinking tasty non-alcoholic beverages instead. Unless of course you think alcohol tastes better than soda. If that is indeed the case then I guess it's something you can't understand until you finally get that acquired taste you guys talk about. Personally, I could never imagine the thought of anything tasting better than soda - especially not alcohol. :lol:

The difference is that one type of removal is much more effective than the other type. If they are still alive, they still have the ability to do harm. Sure, jailing them can limit the harm they do but it is not an end-all solution which I think is necessary for the type of people we're speaking about. What makes a judge's reasons for wanting the death sentence given to somebody any more justifiable than a regular person's? They are for the same reasons: society would be better off without this person.

You are saying that preventing criminals from suffering is what's best for society. How is that true? When criminals have nothing to stop them, then they are going to keep making innocent people suffer. It's us or them. I say them. Then you are contradicting yourself. If criminals are excused because "that's just how they are" then redeemers should be excused too because that's just how they are. If it's not the next best option, then what is? Maybe we should be using that.

Yes, people are a product of their environment. Those who seek redemption are a product of their environment too (the environment being a situation the psycho put you in by committing the crimes). If you want to say that there is a deep reason behind a criminal's actions I can say there is a deep reason behind revenge. Not all criminals can be "saved". Some go back to their horrible old ways no matter how much counseling you put them through. And honestly, I don't get why you're bringing up the "we have no freewill" argument. It goes both ways. Everyone has problems. Not being able to cope with your problems is no excuse for going on killing rampages. Someone's going to suffer. I'd rather it be the criminals than their potential victims.

This is not true at all. They cannot affect society physically, but mentally people can influence generations. Just look at MLKJR, JFK, Jesus Christ, ect... Yeah, their actions may have caused a chain of events to happen and these events might have a continuous effect on society even while they are dead. My point was that after their death, they can't do anything to effect society from that point on. They no longer have the opportunity to effect society.

The thing is, death is a real mystery. We can't even come close to putting a finger on how death might 'feel'. We don't have the knowledge to say death is better than a lifetime of solitary confinement. All we can go by is what we do know - that when someone dies, they no longer have the opportunity to effect society.

I'm in one right now. My friend wants me to move away from home and go to college with him. My girlfriend wants me to stay home so I can see her. I'm pressured to get a job and a car - but it's a catch-22. I need money to buy a car, and I need a car to go to work. I'm probably going to fail my senior year because I'm failing one required class (go figure it's the one that's required) all because I don't have a damn printer, so I don't know what to do now. But on the bright side, at least the sun is still shining. :mrgreen:

Yeah, I'm glad we have clothes. A lot of kids say it would be cool if everyone came to school naked one day, but they only have the hot girls in mind. What about the guys? The unattractive girls? The teachers? :o
