Rune long, it also gives slight defence bonuses, and hits higher. also looks cooler, though its a matter of opinion.

Animated mith armour is the way to go. Only when you enter the cyclops room, make sure your total tokens is a multiple of ten. yous hould bring 2 sets of mith, but i got to rune without mine breaking.
