So you're using PDN? Try hard brush, 70-90% strength. Soft brushes don't work very well for smudging, unless you're trying to make it blurry.

Well, here's the deal: Normal antialiasing is done pixel by pixel. Cleartype antialiasing is done subpixel by subpixel (one RGB stripe at a time). That gives you a smooth edge with small text, but it's ugly on larger text....
