It's a consumerist thing coupled with a desire to be efficient. I want to look good for the same reason I make music or used to make signatures. And if investments are going to make that cheaper in the long run, then sure, I'm going to buy 200$ jeans. Not all 200$ jeans are equal, hence my asking for a brand name. Yes, instead of getting True Religion you might as well roll with Levi's. Mine was too. You might regard it as a jazz musician saying top 40 pop is fake. Most people don't appreciate the first as much as the latter (girls may not like the way I dress as much as they like the way you dress), but there is a certain sense (subjective of course) that one is a higher achievement. The sweatpants analogy isn't appropriate because it is based on jealousy.

I still think it's the type of thing obnoxious bloggers who take pictures of their jeans every month say when they're not hunting for tassel loafers or using excessive ellipses. (beat) It's a good-looking pair of jeans to me, nothing to wax lyrical about. They don't tell a story.
