Agreed. The render should be one of the first layers on, then you make the background, then erase it. It gives a nice effect. Look up some tutorials on http://www.gimptalk.com Also, stay away from lens flares. I think I see one in the lower left, they don't make it look good.

I'd do the Tripsis approach and do fires, thats one quite fast way. Then craft nats.

Theres no point flaming this guy, he's not gonna get any better if you juts insult him. First things first, Save pixels as a gif or png. Jpg has a horrible loss in quality. Second, try some shading by changing the RGB value of colours. Look at Misterxman's siganture. Copy it into paint then Zoom, there will be pixels of many different colours. As in pink's example of shading, make it lighter from the lightsource. Try this, and post back. Also, I would get rid of the black lines, use a slightly darker colour from the colours inside the piece.
