I do not have a dragonfire shield, but you need to choose between the uber defense bonus of the dfs or the nice attack bonusses of the defender. I recommend using a rune defender for all Turael tasks, monsters that use magic attack(the 19 slash bonus of the defender outweighs the 10 magic defense of the dfs), or monsters that don't hit on you. The dfs should be used on high level slayer monsters such as Terrordogs, nechrachels(sp), gargoyles, goraks, all dragons, skeletal wyverns.

How about using a phoenix necklace in the ammy spot, if you get tb'd+entangles it may heal you. Also you may want to use smoke runes so you can take one more essence.
