  1. Update: Monday, May 29 Details in first post
  2. I think it would be better to post them publicly (the best would to keep a WIP thread open for it, and only post in this thread for finals.. but whatever works). That way, not only can we spot who's stealing who's ideas (based on post time), but we can also offer support and advice to those participating. :) Anyways, idea stealing shouldn't be that big a concern. I'm not even sure if GS is going to let people enter with the same concept/bio as somebody else, especially since he is looking for creativity and originality in this.
  3. Heh, maybe, but don't expect to be seeing many of my digital paintings in anyone's sigs (except maybe my own! hah) Hah yes, there is always some sort of pain when painting the details :) But it's still fun... Sorry... As RcS89 said, they are supposed to be reflections of the hills & mountains. Any tips on how I could make them look more reflection-like? Adobe Photoshop 7, as I said above. :) Just the default brushes and a tablet... Most shareware painting programs offer trials, like Photoshop, openCanvas and Painter IX. Painter & openCanvas are specifically tailored towards digital painters, whereas Photoshop was originally meant for Photo Editing & basic CG. As for freeware... They might not be as powerful, but will still work fine for digital painting. In a lot of digipaintings, or at least in speed paintings, you can get away with painting on a single layer and using only a small variety of brushes. Many of the programs below offer layering and plenty of art brushes to make things even easier for you. http://www.artweaver.de/index.php?en_version http://www.ambientdesign.com/artrage.html http://www.eecs.wsu.edu/paint.net/index.html - Open source http://www.squirreldome.com/cyberop.htm http://www.rendera.net/
  4. I like the second a lot. Great capture. You're very lucky to live in a place with such nice sunsets. :)
  5. ... i don't get it :?:
  6. The url should be: http://www.knightsandarmor.com/index.htm This sounds fun. :) Deadline? Here are some Medieval sites which may help as references. Most of these links can be found in ConceptArt's Reference forum. http://www.conceptart.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=30 General http://www.varmouries.com/index.html (worth a visit! good movie stills too) http://www.companie-of-st-george.ch/gallery_1.phtml Movie Stills http://www.movieweb.com/movies/film/16/ ... dex_hi.php http://www.movieweb.com/movies/film/03/ ... dex_hi.php http://www.movieweb.com/movies/film/89/ ... dex_hi.php http://www.movieweb.com/movies/film/01/ ... dex_hi.php Weapons http://www.armor.com/2000/catalog/catalog.html http://www.thehaca.com/ http://therionarms.com/ Armour http://www.armourarchive.org/ http://www.jelldragon.com/ http://www.medieval-weaponry.com/ http://www.swordsandarmor.com/Html_web_ ... _store.cgi Fighting http://www.pennsic.net/photolog.html Castles & Towns http://www.castlesontheweb.com/ http://www.sxc.hu/browse.phtml?f=search ... dieval&p=1 http://france-for-visitors.com/images/l ... illage.jpg http://france-for-visitors.com/images/l ... selles.jpg
  7. Maybe not your best, but still very good. Pants look good, arms aren't bad.. Main flaws: -The square head -The yellow boobs are a unusually large. -The lines on his torso don't look like shadows... Looks like he painted a cross on himself (unless that was intentional) You should try some animated sprites! :)
  8. Cool, which forum? I'm hoping to get back into painting, and I do need the practice! :)
  9. Woah! Fantastic work, especially the beak and the eye. Great amount of detail throughout. Keep it coming! :)
  10. Started out as a speed painting, now it's becoming a small-scale digipainting WIP. I wonder if I'll actually finish this one... :?: Reference from sxc.hu Drawn in Photoshop 7 using default brushes and a Intuos3 tablet Final Update: Friday, June 08 ~15 minutes Finished it off roughly. Well.. it was a learning experience! :| Update: Monday, May 29 ~25 minutes Small update for now. Putting this on a little "pause" to see if I can get anything done for Godslayer's Knight contest. Here's a little workup of a basic sky, with a reflection. I might end up changing the colour of the water to fit the new sky... Here's a concept sketch of how I'm thinking of doing the reflections. My light source arrow is kinda off, but you get the point :P Update: Saturday, May 28 ~1 hr Here it is so far. Any tips on shading/rendering realistic grass? Steps

I can't say I like this one. The typography is weak and unprofessional, the 3D is non-existant, the sparks are distracting, and it looks very blurry. No depth, no creativity, the colours leave much to be desired. On the other hand, this one isn't bad, and is a big step up from the last. The text still needs a lot of work, and the tacky sparks are still there, but they are much more subtle this time. Some sort of 3D can now be seen, which is also good. It's starting to get some depth in it, and the vibrant colours are much more interesting than the above sig. Still not much creativity or originality, but, as I've said, much better than the last. Overall, they are pretty good. You should try bringing more creativity and originality into your sigs, and relying less on filters and stock images. Good luck! :)
  12. Well, as I said, getting a smaller size would probably be better. Not only is it cheaper, but also better for moving around, more workspace friendly and virtually no loss in quality. The site says the 4x8 Intuos3 price is estimated at $349.00 AUD, including tax. And the Graphrie4 is around $149.00. If you're willing to pay the price for an Intuos3 6x8 and you really want it, I'd say go for it. And if you want something cheaper, I'd suggest the Intuos 4x8. Cheaper than that would be Graphires, and if you are looking for even cheaper tablets, you can probably find very inexpensive older Graphires from some sort of second-hand store. You can even look into different manufacturors, I'm sure there are plenty good ones out there. As for where to buy it, I wouldn't suggest the net. I was lucky enough to find a never-before-been-used Intuos3 from a small computer store near me, and it was very cheap compared to the site. I'd only get it online if it's a last resort. If you look around, you should be able to find better deals near you. You can also check out the "Store Locator" at the very bottom of their Prices page. http://www.wacom.com.au/price/price.php
  13. Help? I'm sorry... But how exactly were you helping him there? Your continued sarcasm is only making matters worse... As for an answer to your question... Getting used to it isn't hard. Once you're comfortable, it will feel just like drawing. Just takes a bit of practice. I used to use an old 4x5 WACOM Graphire. Now I use a 6x8 Intuos3. Here's a mini-critique of the two, in my opinion... Graphire1: (4x5 point of view) - Light and Portable (especially the wireless Bluetooth) - Cheaper - Surface got scratchy and sometimes the pen began to snag (may not be true with newer Graphires) - The plastic was very cheap, but I'm sure newer Graphires have been improved... Intuos3: (6x8 point of view) - Not very portable. Kinda heavy compared to smaller sizes - Smooth surface, pen flows nicely - Lots of buttons, very handy. I can create new layers, zoom, scroll, grab colours, etc.. all with the click of a button. - Nice big area for drawing - Great sensitivity, cool nibs, cool tilt ability, better accuracy, better resolution, etc. - In terms of quality, I noticed almost no difference between different tablet sizes Suggestions: - Graphire4 (4x8) if you want a nice, easy and inexpensive tablet to start off with. - Intuos3 (4x8) if you are willing to pay much more for a very decent piece of equipment. - Graphire4 Bluetooth if you want to pay even more and like to travel (or you just want to keep it in your lap a lot..) I suggest Intuos3 4x8 unless you can get the Graphire Bluetooth for much cheaper. Check WACOM's site for more info: http://www.wacom.com/productinfo/index.cfm

The barn looks great. Too bad you were on the highway, could have been the perfect shot. Keep it up! :)
  15. These look great, but unfortunately, the only thing I'm finding nice is the photography - which you didn't do. :? I think the weird spiral, the cut orange, and the blurry bowl are all very distracting and out of place. The quality is also very low, hopefully that was just because of a preview.

Looks like a sleeping bag on his back. :? Slumber party!!
  17. Woah! Thanks a million for this great advice, Kepihus! :D I'm sure it will be very helpful. Nice! That sounds very cool. What program(s) do you use to add the effects, particularly 3D animations, to the videos? Thanks again for the help. :)
  18. Awesome work keiph! :D Only thing I'm not happy with is the font choice. I'm not much of an Arial fan! :P heh I'm very interested in getting into some simple (profit) graphic design like business cards and the like. Any suggestions? Is it even possible for a 16 year old? Where should I look? Also, are you a freelance or contracted designer? Or is it just a hobby?
  19. Yea, console is a major pain once you get into more advanced things. I use JCreator to code & compile in java. I love it. :D http://www.jcreator.com/download.htm

Here are some old sketches. used refs the next 2 are very old :| Back from last summer
  21. I think you're right, his hair is darker. Thanks! Yes the background is a bit of a pain right now, hopefully with the rest of the layout it won't be as bad. And I'll see about trying to bump up the contrast a bit. Thanks! Hah, yea, I didn't mean it to be a frown but now that you mention it I can really see where you're coming from. You are supposed to have a program that asks the user for 3 values (height, slide, and total depth) and calculate it from there. You ouput the calculations and such to complete the program. You get bonus marks for thinking of a different riddle and by adding day extensions (like "22nd", "23rd" etc.). He expects it to be done in Console with the coe we've learnt in class (which is barely anything). I've taken it a step further by using some much more advanced concepts and plenty of GUI. :) Have you learnt about classes, objects, and methods yet? If so you're already ahead of the game.. and GUI will be much easier to pick up on. If not, it's still not too hard to learn, just takes a lot of practice to get used to. http://leepoint.net/notes-java/index.html http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial ... nents.html (this site is helpful but includes a lot of extra code that can be removed.. I found it difficult to start with) http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/api/ (learn to read the API, it's probably the most useful link I can show you!) I use Google a lot, just make sure you include the right keywords. If you have any questions on GUI I'd be glad to help. :) Looks great. If you want, you can include the "currentHeight-=2" on the same line as your if statement. The brackets are only really needed for multi-line if statements. My version's a little different, and I also have to test for illegal values (e.g. for negatives or when height==slide) since I've got user input. But yours seems to work fine for the values you've got there.
  22. Thanks for the tips mate! I'm not much of a Bush fan, so I'm not surprised I screwed up his face. :? Ah well, hopefully there's still some "bush" in it. It's a simple school assignment using loops in Java. The riddle: A frog is stuck in a well. It climbs up 3m in the day and slides down 2m while it sleeps. If the well is 20m high, how many days will it take before the frog escapes the well? It's supposed to be done in Console, and you need to let the user input their own heights and info. I decided to crack it up a bit by changing the scenario to a mountain climbing game. Each "Team" (like Team Bush) has different skills & bonuses, and each "level" on the mountain has different snow & wind conditions. Custom characters can be made. It uses some flashy GUI and photoshop graphics. I just don't think I'm cut out for console and ascii art :P
  23. Here's a rough job at some pixel characters for a game I'm programming. I'll be updating this as I finish them. (and yes, chances are I actually will finish these, since it's part of a school assignment) Any advice and/or suggestions would be great! Dubya Bush I wasn't very colour conservative there. :? Hopefully I'll be more careful on my next ones. Mallory wip.. Sir Edmund Hillary wip.. Becky Scott wip.. Merlin (unlockable) wip..
  24. I'll be moving onto some non-fruit subjects soon. Hopefully. I'm just testing a new style of rendering and texturing in this one. I definitely should have spent more times on the form & linework, it looks lopsided now that I'm finished with it.
  25. Thanks komodo!
