    Today...

Got back from Florida today at 3:00 AM, headed to school at 6:45 AM. Grandfather's surgery went well, apparently one of the arteries leading to his brain was 95% blocked, which was why he suffered a stroke. But he came out just fine and got sent back home yesterday. Florida was awesome, I would love to move back. Also checked out a few colleges down there and got a bit more training with 3D computer graphics. Shouldn't be too much longer until I can make an actual piece of art! Oh, and I took 3 tests today. Fun fun >.>

Break the habit before it's too late! Haha I call it an iTouch now just to piss people off, since the majority of my friends flip out from hearing it. And there's a guy on youtube that posted videos of Thomas playing some of his songs, apparently taking lessons from him. Watching them I realized that he's really just an okay guitarist, it's the singing/screaming + playing guitar that makes him insane :P My friend also got to take pictures with Andrew and Tom. ENVY LEVEL HAS EXCEEDED MAXIMUM CAPACITY.

Well, Muse was absolutely incredible. And I just found out he got Thomas Erak's autograph. Good for him -.-

Found out one of my friends just saw The Fall of Troy a few hours ago. It was his second time seeing them too o.O Lucky guy! I can still gloat to him that I saw Muse and he didn't though. :D

Found out my grandfather's having life-threatening surgery performed on him this Sunday, so me and my family are going on a 12-hour car trip tomorrow.

Omarendering! Today I got a 90% on a Precalc quiz that I thought I failed (fall asleep halfway through and did the rest half-asleep). It was a pleasant surprise :D
  9. Haha that was a satirical status, poking fun at what I often see in facebook statuses :P

  10. I'll make it easy with triads... A major triad is a chord that includes three notes, called the root, the third, and the fifth. In a D Major triad, the D is the root. With Major triads the interval between the root and the third is four half steps, and between the third and the fifth is three half steps. So... D (+1 half step) D# (+1 Half step) E (+1 Half step) F (+1 Half step) = F#. So F# is the third. Then we move three half-steps up from F#... F# (+1 half step) G (+1 half step) G# (+1 half step) = A. So the D major triad includes the notes D, F#, and A. Now when you're forming a minor triad, you just take the third of the major triad and lower it a half step. This changes the interval from the root and the third to three half steps, and increases the interval from the third to the fifth to four half steps. So changing D major to d minor is as simple as either lowering the third a half step or flipping the interval location of the Major triad. I added bold tags around the root, third and fifth: D (+1 half step) D# (+1 Half step) E (+1 Half step) F (+1 Half step) F# (+1 half step) G (+1 half step) G# (+1 half step) A - D F# A - D Major D (+1 half step) D# (+1 Half step) E (+1 Half step) F (+1 Half step) F# (+1 half step) G (+1 half step) G# (+1 half step) A - D F A - d minor Now, once you've got that down, augmented and diminished aren't much different. First, when you diminish something in music you lower it one half-step. When you augment something in music you raise it one half-step. When using diminished and augmented triads, you are affecting the fifth of the chord. However the only tricky thing is when you're diminishing, you're affecting the minor triad and when you're augmenting you're affecting the Major triad. So you take d minor, D F A, and diminish the fifth, making it d diminished, D F Ab. If you want to work with it from a Major triad though, you'll have to convert it to minor first, which isn't difficult at all haha. With augmented triads, you take D Major, D F# A, and augment the fifth, making it D Augmented, D F# A#. I hope that made sense!
  11. I used to be more verbal, then when I realized the anonymity is really just an illusion I started toning it down a bit. Now I seem more boring than I really am. Well, the way I post sounds more like the way I talk, I just have more enthusiasm in real life and talk more.
  12. Theory is how music works. It isn't any different on guitar than it is on piano or viola. I'd first watch this series by Howard Goodall, titled How Music Works: http://www.youtube.com/user/timegrinder#g/c/FC019DB4E1400743 Part 1, Melody http://www.youtube.com/user/timegrinder#g/c/D22A163254D058A0 Part 2, Rhythm http://www.youtube.com/user/timegrinder#g/c/B65B121D5BDB43BE Part 3, Harmony http://www.youtube.com/user/timegrinder#g/c/64F4C249A2A64340 Part 4, Bass These will give you a general idea of what you should expect to learn about if you decide to take a music theory course in school. There's also a few good websites, like... Musictheory.net - A website with a lot of theory-related resources. There are lessons, trainers (I love the ear trainer!), and calculators. Fully exploring that website will give you knowledge of about half a semester of a music theory course. The Crusade - An 11-part column on ultimate-guitar that covers again, about half a semester of a music theory course. I'd go over this as well as musictheory.net, since they have mostly the same information, but one part might make more sense on one than the other. However if you REALLY like theory (like me :D) the best thing you can do is take a course on it. The next best thing to do would be books, but I'd only do that after going over these websites, since most beginner books give the same information. It's the more advanced information (like counterpoint) that's better to learn through a course or a book.

    Today...

I've really been looking into colleges today, and I'm very annoyed. Every college that seems to be perfect for me always has one small detail that makes it not worth going to >.> Bard: Too expensive California State: So inexpensive the education probably isn't that great Full Sail: Only able to follow one path (no minors), incredibly difficult course load (getting bachelors in 2 years) Expression: Only able to follow one path (I want music AND animation, not just one!) I'll find something eventually :(
  14. Here's a little suggestion. Whenever you make an addition/subtraction/change to your composition, ALWAYS have a legitimate reason for doing so. "It just fits" is not worthy of an excuse and will only hurt you in the long run. Well, unless whatever you had before was actually decent and the addition/subtraction/change is terrible... but that's what band mates are for!

Do you have a cooking torch? If so, I've got a great creme brulee recipe I could post.
  16. Then going by your logic, America should find a way to disable China's military because they have a possibility of winning a war against us. Yeah, seems fair. Stop being an elitist.
  17. Lately I've been sort of combining the modern method to composition with the classical method. Basically, the modern method has a couple verses, a chorus/riff/both, and a bridge and maybe a breakdown or outro. It's very structured and usually doesn't change to much. At least with the music I listen to. But before composers would not just limit the song down to a key signature but to a specific note, and have it resolve throughout the entire song to another note. Throughout the song tension is constantly being built up and released, but each release leaves just a little bit more tension to build up towards the big finale at the end of the song. I'm trying to use both methods by forming a sort of beginning note and having an ending note to resolve to, while also loosely following the modern structures. However the verses and choruses will be different nearly every time, there will be little themes to recognize them by. This keeps the songs memorable and easy to get into while trying something that isn't used often in modern music. There's also a little thing I'm working on. It's sort of a new guitar technique. It's been done before, but very rarely because of its difficulty, and my method's a bit different. I'm not telling though :D

Went out with a bunch of friends to a Japanese steakhouse. I had a blast. Then everyone went to homecoming, while I came back home to browse TIF and play Metroid. :(
  19. Either you really live in a terrible area or you judge people much worse than you should. A bit of rough behavior and swearing isn't all that bad. Neither is substance abuse as long as they aren't douches about it. But yeah, harming people and raping people is bad... You don't need to hurt him though <.<
  20. I prefer to use gradients and brushing to adjust color.
