If you don't give them stuff quick enough, I think they tantrum. Elephants are only dangerous now if you provoke them. You should have some kind of mechanism that pokes pins into their feet whenever hippies walk by. A spartan fortress? Three hundred dwarves seems a bit much to have to deal with. No, next you need a built-in waterfall and a Sparkgear-style magma shower to take care of pesky hovering orcs.
