200M in all Skills
In case I wasn't clear, I support training via SoF and accepting donations. I think it's irrational not to, especially if/when the opportunity presents itself.

And the question is: does that represent most RS players or a small minority? How many people choose to relax by fishing sharks rather than doing something else in RS (or RL)? If only a few people do that, then you're proving my point

The same concept applies to training via the SoF. But nobody ever wants to talk about that either. What a vain, masochistic community we have here

RuneScape: Old and New
I think anyone blaming "efficiency" for community problems has chosen an especially odd scapegoat. Just for starters, you likely won't even hear people talking about such things outside of a few specialized forums, because the vast majority of players don't care a whit for efficiency. This is mostly a guess, of course, because there's almost no way to tell whether other players are playing efficiently; it doesn't affect you in any way. As a personal, stylistic choice, players of both camps also need to recognize that efficient advice versus for-fun advice aren't meant to compete with or insult each other. If someone asks how to get to a particular place a ways out of town, there can easily be two responses. A) Take highway X and you'll get there in 30 minutes, and B) There's a lovely scenic route which lets you pass by a lake-filled valley, taking only 10 minutes longer (40 minutes total). Neither of these are wrong. People taking the highway aren't insulting the valley. If you prefer the scenic route, then just take it; nobody's stopping you. The problem is, there really aren't many (if any) "scenic" paths in RuneScape. All of your options are just different "highways." Think about it: how many people train a skill for fun, without keeping track of XP or levels or goals? How many people go back to chopping yews after they've got enough money to pay for whatever they want? How many people go back to chopping yews after they get 99 WC? How many people keep training skills even though they've hit 200M XP? Very few, if any. People justify the grind in their mind by convincing themselves that they're being productive or efficient. Off the top of my head, dungeoneering's really the only skill that fits into that category. I've always dungeoneered because it was fun, and the perks of "training" it were just a nice side-effect, rather than the focus itself. That's how all of the skills should be structured, IMO.

"I want a girlfriend/boyfriend", and other such relationship advice
Get in the habit of talking to EVERYONE-- that includes guys and ugly girls too :P Every time you're checking out at a store, just ask the cashier how their day's going or if they've done anything fun recently. In other words, just try to brighten peoples' days.

For talking to strangers, just say hi. If you're both in the same class, just start talking about that. I used to just sit down next to cute girls in lecture and ask them if they'd gotten started on assignments due later in the month and stuff, and then once you've broken the ice like that, you're free to talk about whatever. If a girl's like, "OMG WHY ARE YOU BEING FRIENDLY AND TALKING TO ME ABOUT THIS CLASS WE'RE IN?!" then there's something wrong with her, not you :P

It's not efficiency that isn't fun. It's the mindless grinding and repetition associated with it. Problems arise when fun, inefficient activities become dead content because people consider them a waste of time.

You're overanalyzing this. Just go talk to her. Don't think about how the conversation's going to go, just start it up and see what happens. Even if you get "rejected," you'll feel better than you would've if you didn't talk to her at all. Ask me how I know. :) Also, erase "creep" from your vocabulary. Erase "[bleep]" too while you're at it. They're irrational, fear-mongering labels that do nothing for you.

That's probably a crew reroll. I don't understand why Jagex can't just remove the cap on bonus rewards, yet implement a daily limit on each of them.

"I want a girlfriend/boyfriend", and other such relationship advice
I was thinking about jealousy the other day... Ideally, your relationship(s) with women shouldn't be too different from your relationships with your close friends. I remember when I was a kid, before I was interested in girls, I'd get jealous if my friends would hang out with other friends instead of me. But as I grew older, those irrational feelings of jealousy went away. Nowadays, when I'm with a close friend, I'm usually having a blast. When he leaves, I go back to whatever it is I'm doing, and I don't think about him at all until the next time I see him. I don't wonder, "Wonder what he's doing right now. Wonder if he's thinking about me. Wonder if he wants to hang out with me again sometime soon. Wonder if he'd rather hang out with our other mutual friend than hang out with me." And my friendships don't become any weaker by not having thoughts like that. Ideally, your relationships with women should be the same way. When she's with you, you have the time of your life, but when she leaves, let her go and go back to doing what you enjoy. Don't think about her until the next time you're with her. I think somewhere along the line, people quit considering friendships a legitimate form of validation and happiness, and instead place that responsibility entirely upon their significant others. ========================== @Omar, I think Rpg was talking about social acceptability, not social responsibility. In other words, I'd rather be a happy oddball than an unhappy sheep. Many people value social norms and peer-acceptance over their own happiness. I don't. As far as altruism goes, people tend to underestimate the power of happiness. Happy people are just "better" people (when compared to an unhappy version of themselves). When you're happy, you make the people around you happier. You want to give, rather than get. Compare this to people who are depressed who generally make those around them also feel depressed/cynical. ========================== In other news, I watched this video in bed last night before I fell asleep. Thought it was really interesting. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBgcjtE0xrE

Lol well response rates are irrelevant if they don't lead to dates :P That was actually the first self-help book I ever read. I took a Dale Carnegie leadership course when I was in high school after reading it. How to Stop Worrying and Start Living is probably at the top of my list of favorite self help books. Should be required reading for anyone who's frequently stressed out or worrisome

As a friendly reminder, those spins didn't magically appear out of nowhere. You have to work in RL to make real money to obtain those spins.

[/hide] As a software engineer I do have some expertise in this and I can tell you that if they follow proper version control practices then it should be just that easy. I have been working on a project for years, and even though the software has been continuously updated, at any point I could look at a copy of the software from the beginning of the project by simply using a different "view". Just google software version control. Since you're someone with experience in the field, please don't allow misunderstanding to spread due to vague English. Assuming, for example, that they're still using the same version control system that they were in 2006, then it should indeed be "just that easy" to look at the code, sure. That doesn't mean the game would be in a ready-to-play state. Too many people in this thread have done as you said, googled SVC, and came away with just that faulty impression. [/hide] My main problem is EoC as well. I dont even care if its not 2006 they bring back. EoC ruined the game. Not just the combat but everything around it. Thats why I hate it. I'd actually be interested to hear more about this. Personally I don't like EoC, and I prefer the old combat system. But I'm not sure what you mean when you talk about EoC ruining other things as well. Minigames died are empty, Wild dead, I heard staking is dead to. Alot of monsters are not practicle to fight. Combat triangle too harsh. Most weapons and rewards from quests are useless. Markets crashed. Everything you described is solely combat oriented. Well to be fair, pretty much everything in RS ultimately leads to combat.

I understand. It's kind of a grey area as far as "omission of the truth" goes. I don't consider it lying, but I understand why it makes you uncomfortable. And I think the ends justify the means if omission of the truth makes both parties happier in the long run. I don't believe the same for lying, though. That's just a personal thing of mine. Again, if your beliefs/opinions on the matter are ultimately making you unhappy, then it would be a wise idea to reevaluate those beliefs. But if that's not the case, carry on. :) As far as your hot neighbor goes, it's irrational to be uncomfortable with her sleeping with other guys. That's just your obsolete primitive biology talking. That being said, yes, it is the "normal" response. Furthermore, it's the socially acceptable response (unfortunately). But that's another topic :P As long as she's not talking about other guys in graphic detail, I don't really see the issue. If she talks about it to you and it actually does bother you, just tell her you don't want to hear about it (and similarly, don't tell her about any of the girls you might see down the road). But I think it would be in your best interest to just accept the fact that she's seeing other guys and learn to be ok with it. You don't have to like it, but if you can just accept it, you'll be doing yourself a huge service down the road. Jealousy/neediness/territoriality/etc. is generally a threat to one's long-term happiness, regardless of if you're poly or mono. But yeah it's probably not something you want to talk about w/ your friend if he's going to be "close-minded" about it. But if he's a really close friend of yours, then you might want to discuss it w/ him. Usually the closer a friend is to me, the more open they are to considering my opposing viewpoints.

Well before I send them things like that, I'm almost positive that they're going to quit responding. And that just makes it even more amusing to me. For better or for worse, this image more or less summarizes my attitude while dating: [spoiler=Language] It's very hit-or-miss. Makes me happy either way. :)

If you buy one option, and then another option, is the first option you bought free to switch back to? Or do you always have to fork over all of those resources to switch between them?

hahaha you've been reading too many of aerendil's posts :P Sadly my sense of humor's really sarcastic, ironic, and dry, so it's really hard to convey via text haha. It's even harder when she's never met me and can't tell that I'm trying to joke around :-|

I wonder how many more dates I'd be able to schedule if I didn't value laughing at myself over scheduling dates. Examples of girls going radio silent after my responses: Me: What's the funnest thing you've done in the past 7 days? Her: I accidentally walked into some guy's dorm room because I thought it was mine. Me: ...was he hot??? Me: Have you been dating a lot or a little recently? Her: I had a horrible date last week. I saw The Hobbit with some guy who kept trying to kiss me during the whole film. Me: Hey it could've been worse. He could've cut a hole in the bottom of the popcorn and put your hand in the bag. That'd be awkward because, you know, all of the popcorn would spill everywhere and that stuff's expensive. Me: What would you say your top two qualities are that have nothing to do with your looks? Her: My sense of humor and ability to listen. Me: Oh wow. Do you have perfect pitch??? :twss:

RuneScape: Old and New
As much as I'd love to play in 2006 RS, part of the reason why I enjoyed it was because efficiency and PvM weren't being shoved down our throats at the time. If 2006 RS was brought back, it wouldn't change the fact that everyone is still aware of and obsessed with efficiency-- which would have an undesirable impact on the game (for me, at least :P). In other words, ignorance was bliss. Ignorance isn't something that you can bring back. Similar to how RS is often the most fun when you're a noob fresh out of the tutorial because you don't know anything yet (for better or for worse). When you make a new account after you've gotten bored with your main account, it's not the same because you're no longer ignorant. It's usually worse because you actually understand/comprehend how long/boring it is to achieve certain things in RS. If 2006 RS was brought back, the lack of modern-day conveniences (Summoning, the GE, soul split, etc.) would be very off-putting to many as well.

They simply need to build a subway system. They simply need to install a democratic government. They simply need to put a man on the moon. Saying it's simple doesn't mean it's simple. I think you mean, just because it's simple doesn't mean it's easy :P

I can almost guarantee that if Noxx was still seeing multiple women, he wouldn't have felt the need to post that. He's following the predictable pattern of sleeping with just one woman and then developing irrational neediness/territorialness afterwards. Which, inevitably, will repel this girl. He also seems to have a bit of the irrational "Madonna-[bleep]" in him, judging by the fact that he felt uncomfortable knowing she probably just banged another dude before him.

Semantics aside, it's pretty sad. I'm sure if he had his choice on how he'd die, he'd die doing what he loved. But I'm also sure that if he had a choice, he'd rather live and keep doing what he loved, than die doing what he loved. - Caleb Moore dies following horrible crash (X-Games)
