I wasn't really dismissing it, just making a point that whatever's happened, it's all fairly innocous stuff. As if they're practical jokers or something, popping up in your family photos. On a serious note, yes, a lot of serious research is being put into paranormal activity. And the results? Nothing, absolutely no proper evidence in favour of the paranormal. Take Susan Blackmore for example. She had a powerful out of body experience in her university days, strong enough to make her believe in psychics, paranormal stuff, the whole lot. So did her doctoral thesis on that kind of thing, investigating it scientifically and whatnot. She found absolutely no evidence for it, and soon got frustrated with how convinced people would be that their own experience was genuinely paranormal despite the evidence to the contrary. I don't think scientists should ever be close-minded to the possibility, and yes, proper scientific tests should be done on this kind of thing. But it's a hard area to work in when so much of the evidence is anecdotal and heresay, and even when disproven is unlikely to be accepted.

I like it how if there's an afterlife with billions of ghosts floating about, they're all mischevious and just like to kick stuff over at night or walk up and down creaky staircases in old buildings to spook people a bit. :P

Defender, absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. We're pretty lucky to have the plethora of fossils that we do, considering what a statistically tiny amount of dead stuff is fossilised.

I don't listen to much Radiohead, or buy much music at all, but I like the way they are doing it so they will get a little something from me. If they do well enough hopefully other bands will do it too. I wouldn't really call myself a big Radiohead fan either, but I think this idea is so good it's worth supporting.

I heard about the new pricing system this morning in the paper (I wish the OP had put something in about it) and I think it's a fantastic idea.

As I read more and more of that blog I was almost sure that it had to be some kind of parody/satire, glad to see someone else picked up on it. :P

Although it seems a little sad, courts generally don't take away children from their natural parents unless they absolutely have to. Courts always act in the best interests of the child, which almost always mean keeping them with their natural parents. So if she's got herself into the state where the courts have to take away her children, I don't have much sympathy for her.

And this brings me back to my original point. By expecting that you should be able to play games when you've done your work (or even before it) you're taking your education for granted. It's never as black and white as just doing the next lesson, you can always read round your subject or mess around with it and try and apply it to different things. I'm not saying school should be dull and boring, it should be the opposite, but that doesn't mean it need involve games.

I watched Sunshine as well last night. Overall I enjoyed it, thought it tailed off a bit towards the end and turned into a something akin to a slasher film, but otherwise it was very good. Visually, it was the most stunning film i've ever seen.

I'm sorry assassin but that argument and every variation of it is an incredibly stupid weak and illogical argument. I can use that argument in different situations as a last ditch effort to defend any manner of rediculous laws, watch. All computers with the internet must have mandatory government censorship of porn, Ebay and amazon. A lot of people don't even have internet acsess so stop grumbling. All video games that are not rated E will be banned. Don't complain just be grateful that you even HAVE video games unlike some countries. All cars must now be painted with a hideous brown color. Some people would give an arm and a leg just to have ANY car so stop moaning. Year: 1774. The price of tea has shot up significantly because of British tax laws. Some people can't get tea at ANY price so stop moaning about it. Or we can even try All students are required to write a 10 page essay every week, be grateful about this wonderful education we are forcing you to recieve since some people you have never met don't have the oppotunity to get such a fine education. (and even if you do write this 10 page essay a week they still won't get this fine education). As Nadril has pointed out, that's a strawman. I probably didn't phrase it well enough, but my point wasn't that service x isn't obtainable in an LEDC therefore service x should be used at all times to the nth degree. Rather, that the explicit premise of going to school is to work, learn and get a good education. Grumbling when you are pushed towards actually carrying out this premise is what I was knocking. Not the fact that he should be grateful for any education no matter how harsh becuase it isn't obtainable in an LEDC. Obviously if he was being abused by his teacher I wouldn't say, "don't grumble, at least he's teaching you" because that's not the idea or design of a school. Those counter-points you used were completely different. There is no specific intention for personal internet use, no intention or premise behind car colour, playing video games or the price of tea. In short, you go to school to work, not play games, and he shouldn't be able to expect otherwise.

I guess i'm one of the few who isn't motivated by a high paying career, only the pursuit of knowledge then. A career is necessary, yes, but it's not what drives me personally.

That book/flash is almost pure speculation on the part of the author. It's a nice little clean piece of flash if you like that kind of thing, but as for the science behind it, it's largely worthless. I could write more, but I think this review of the guy's book on Amazon sums it all up pretty well:

I think that there will always be quantum mechanical vacuum fluctuations in any region of space, so you can never entirely remove all the energy from any region of space, or something. I don't think perfection exists in real life, but if you're interested in the philosophy of perfection, I believe Plato discussed it a lot with his theory of transcendent idea. For example, consider a cave with a fire in it. You're chained so that you can only face the back wall. And then a whole host of various animals are paraded past the front of the cave so that you can only see their shadows dancing on the back wall. That's what Plato thought this reality was like, all horses out there are imperfect copies of some kind of "perfect" horse, that transcends reality. It's all a load of jiggery pokery and speculation to be honest, but mathematics is perhaps the only human discipline which transcends reality and is "perfect", since it doesn't really "exist" in the conventional sense of the term (i.e. takes a physical form).

I can sympathise, I like spirits but I've had a few bad experiences with them so I really try and avoid them like the plague now. Beer anyday for me, I don't like wine at all, i'm not fussy about what brands, one of my favourites is Black Sheep ale (people from Yorkshire should be familiar with it).
