  1. Star Control 2 was awesome. Star Craft 2...not so much.
  2. Mather and Resistance are working on a new modless hegemony. Everyone is V excited. Beyond that, EU3 is the only hegemony-esc game being worked on at the moment, which requires you to own EU3 and one of the expansion packs...Heir to the Throne, I think. Oh, and Battle of the Seven Kingdoms, though that might have died, I don't know. Welcome back, by the way.
  3. The grass is always greener. Anyway, I have it on good authority that Admiral Dusty doesn't want any filthy non-Terrans in his empire...for referance. Well...at least not serving on the ships, maybe as peasents...Meatshields....Live Fire Practice targets... IDK. A session today would be somewhat remise on my part, since Tuesday is Ross' day. I don't mind doing one on Wednesday AND Thursday, if people want it. Also, you should never accept gifts from Retech...if they aren't ticking the trigger is digital.
  4. [hide] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fwj77hm8IiU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1CRsEmC5sQ [/hide] Covering most of the various types of sadness. *Gets out his typing gloves* In 2075, after an extended period without internet, the UN decrees that only one space ship may be launched into space. By 2076 the Unity is finished, and launched with its crew in coma pods, set to wake up at random intervals. Chapter 1: On the first day the first wave of crew climbed out of the pods and Nero rushed to the bridge, claiming the Captain's chair. After various arguments as to who should be Captain, the crew decided that Nero was best. Nex, meanwhile, added computer protocols to make himself the Captain. Nero didn't like this, and made Nex give him control. Nex gave Nero control, after making sure he had actual control. Nero discovered Nex's treachery, and after an intense battle, Nex escaped the ship, while Nero consolidated his power and erased Nex's protocols. Chapter 2: After many adventures, Nero had fallen into a Coma, Jeremiah had assumed command, and Nex had rejoined the crew with SUE, an AI he had brought from the Swiss. Jen had also brought a new destroyer, known as Kirby. A mission came through to destroy the American Space Base orbiting Earth. Jen broadcast on public comms that she was looking to buy nerve gas after intensively scanning the American base. For some reason the American freaked out over this and boarded the Unity. After some time the Unity managed to regain control and fled the system. Chapter 3: After arriving in the new system the crew quickly met some aliens, some friendly, some not. Dealing with the friendly aliens the crew began mining. While mining they found a strange, large, void like entity, which they hit with a hammer. The void entity woke up and plunged into the local star, creating a wave of darkness, which engulfed the whole system. The Unity fled back to Sol. Chapter 4: On returning to the Sol system they found Earth in roughly the same condition, and set about doing missions, over the course of which Jen was arrested for crimes against humanity, and she blew up the Kirby to prevent anyone getting their hands on it. A station, Asgard, was also built by the Unity. A while after that the Swiss disappeared, mysteriously. After a while strange readings were detected from Earth, which the Unity chased up. On arriving they discovered a strange tear in spacetime, which was sending dangerous amounts of heat out. Fortunately a shield had been erected, but it was weakening. *joins the other summery* Meanwhile the Space Powers, Britian and Unity...basically...go 'Oh noes' and begin evacuating Earth with the general idea that once you have 50 million starving, hungry and disease ridden people, it will be a synch. Britian then goes hmmm...we can deal with 30 million, and kills off 20 million people. The evacuees go WTH! And mutiny. Unity goes 200,000 is easy! Britian goes W/E, this is a headache. Unity goes what if we created a new planet to feed these people! Britian goes hey, I want a peice of that! Unity goes NO! and calls in the mutiny brigade to help them kill the British fleet trying to steal the planet. Britain goes W/E, this is a headache. Unity realises that 200,000 people on a station, with no public amenities, brown pills for food and no government, is a bad idea. Unity decides to solve this by putting in some buildings. 200,000 people used the buildings FOR OFF LABEL USES, LIKE BUILDING WEAPONS! Unity discovers the brown pills are drugs if burned and are being used OFF-LABEL AS WEAPONS! Unity goes W/E, this is a headache, where is the genocide ray? Drake goes, man, humans suck, and becomes Apep. Apep goes, wouldn't it be good if Humans were better? Apep releases virus on Asgard. 200,000 people begin mutating. Jen goes WTH and declares war on the mutants. Jen goes, hmm, people are weak, annex!!!! Unity realises something is going on. Earth charges in, and gets taken over. Jermiah goes, kill it it with fire. Jen goes WTH and disables the Unity. Jeremiah goes kill it with fire. Theros goes yay. Piriana explodes into the station. Jen goes WTH and throws psionics at it until it goes away. Earth goes hmm, boring and throws himself at it till it goes away. Earth weakens Jen. Jeremiah goes WTH and throws himself at it till it goes away. Theros goes WEEEEEEEEEE and throws himself at it till it goes away. Jen goes I have a headache, timeout? Theros goes NO! and shoots her. Apep goes guise, I was evil! Jeremiah goes, hey, can I be evil too? Bonsai goes, yeah, me too! Apep goes get the hell away from me. Faust goes whatever happened to Nero? Chi goes, wouldn't it be better if my arm was a scanner. 5. Sorry guys, sister needs picking up from X, dropping off at Y...gap of 2 hours, which is really 1 hour since I have to drive home, before going and driving her back as well. So tonight is cancelled. Can people post if they would have prefered to have the holey session, for future referance.
  6. Better than arbitrarily using real figures, like saying it takes a googleplex of coloumbs to make a wormhole...just turns into battle before mod and player. This resembles a conversation I once observed, where all the angles in a triangle was known. The first person launched into an explaination of all the various methods you could use pythagous, and sine, and cosine to work out the lengths of the sides. The second person simply said that the only thing you knew about the triangle was that all the angles added up to 180, and you could express the lengths relative to each other. And after about 20 minutes it dawned on the first person that, yes, all of this methods could work, but they required 1 side to be known. This reminds me of that. You have stated that coloumbs can be calculated from watts, from amperes and from ohms...you have failed to notice that we don't know the watts, amperes or ohms. And this is my point...I can assign arbitrary numbers to arbitrary systems without invalidating the system, you can't assign arbitary numbers to defined systems without invalidating it...and since you can't define the energy required to power a Stargate, you can't define the numbers, and therefore have to be arbitary. So either you work out all the data you want and I can understand, and then I look at that and give you a kT value based on that...or you accepted the arbitrary nature of the game.
  7. No one is 'that bad', and we have all had bad moments.
  8. Grays is not complicated, it is Rad*1,000. Unlike rads though, it has a simple 1-40 system of substantive risk to certain death, and a handy chart on the wiki page. And given you asked for an actual measurement of Radiation, after I said 'alot' its highly hypocritical to say it is overcomplicated. Coulombs can be used to measure electrical charge, I simply refuse to use them. I also refuse to see why I should give corridor lengths as Parsecs because someone wants to use them, because it is vastly overcomplicated and unneccessary, and I have no time to do those calculations. Given my tenative understanding of electronics, speculative scientific concepts and lack of time or inclination to explore concepts such as these, it is hardly suprising that I am not using them. Coulombs have the additional flaw in that a wormhole generator requires an unknown amount of power and most data gives generator output in watts and joules, not columbs. Similarly most data on ohmic caculations are in volts, amps and ohms, not columbs. kT bypasses this by virte of also being an unknown quanity.
  9. Your statement is flawed: Two reasons. First is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nixon_Shock Which shows that you don't actually have to base a currency, EC, on anything for it to be interchangable. Secondly: The notion of that 1 kT of resources converts to 1,000 EC, exactly, ignores the laws of Entropy...and indeed the laws of Economics. 1 kT is a measure of resources which is required to do one kT of work...Similar to a Newton, except broader, taking into account all the conversions of the various resources, sifting through them, seperating them, generally fiddling with them...Hence why Echo was able to find a 1kT lump of Gallicite without wrenching his arm off trying to lift it up. Furthermore I have never said that you could not use Solar Energy, or any other type of energy, to produce kT...I simply said the exchange rate sucked... I also never said kT or EC were used to measure electrical charge, I simply said that if you launch into a massive debate during a session I will not accept hard science...and I will not provide you with the physical breakdown of everything in the game, since I am not a world renowned expert and I will get things wrong. Also, I do not appreciate being lead into traps solely so you can point out that I am not being scientifical... Actually no. Kilotonne, spelt correctly, is a kt, not kT... On a purely semanic point: It has never actually been said by the A/SI that kT is a Kilotonne. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12603519/Space/Logs/%23space9.Tip.It.log http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12603519/Space/Logs/%23space17.Tip.It.log Only times A/SI says kilotonne. Both are where the AI is measuring weight, so fits with the whole kT isn't kt. Which is fairly suprising since I am only making the distinction now. Continuality FTW! The middle ground would be to use Newton Moles, with a variance every ((1836.15*Molar Mass)/number of moles.), to make up for the mass of the electrons. However, every day tasks, like weighing a pencil, would require a mass spectrometer, and would destroy the pencil...making the variance fairly unimportant...so we can probably skip that bit. In any event it would require the molecular mass of every object to be worked out, the problems I see with this are thus: I don't have level 10 engineering, or level 10 technical drawing. I don't have diazonium salt or a azodye, so I couldn't make the blueprints. I don't have a garage, basement or workshop. I don't have a NASA surplus outlet nearby. I don't have a mass spectrometer. Nor the skills to use one. I don't have billions of pounds to buy materials. If I did I wouldn't. I don't have more than about 3 minutes before people start getting hissy. So me building and giving accurate calculations of the Newton Mole cost of fabricating a pencil would crash the game. Now, since I can't offer you a compromise I am afraid I will have to accept your logic of using Coulombs...But, wait...Don't I need to know the molecular mass of the items to use Coulombs too? Since I need to know the number of electrons, protons, neutrons and any stray other particles present... Not use the exact molecular makeup and make an educated guess? I guess it wouldn't matter that much, since there is a 1,600,000,000 electron margin of error in every coulomb. That said, I don't know the molecular make up of wood, I'll ask: http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/chem03/chem03702.htm So it is mainly cellulose, lets start with that: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cellulose Thats handy, (C6H10O5)n. Now, lets define N. Oh rats, we need the weight of the pencil, minus the graphite core. Can we estimate? No, that would defeat the purpose of using such an exact form of measurement. http://www.ask.com/web?qsrc=2417&o=10148&l=dis&q=how+much+does+a+pencil+weigh+without+the+lead Rats, we can't seem to find the weight of the pencil. Is there some other way of finding N? Yes! If I use my mass spectrometer! Oh wait, I don't have a mass spectrometer. Is there another way? I could go to the shops, buy a pencil, carefully remove the graphite core, weight the pencil on some scientific scales, and then divide the weight of the wood by the molecular mass, thus giving N. Oh rats, I don't have a shop that is 3 minutes away from my house, in fact, I am not sure I have the time machine required to complete the operation in less than three minutes. Is there another option open to me? Is there some way of measuring the mass of the pencil, without a mass spectrometer, without buying a pencil, without knowing the mass of a pencil, without a time machine, in less than three minutes? Rats, I can't think of any. Well, I guess that Coloumbs out, and the compromise out, only the kT system remains on the table, I guess I will have to use that. Seriously, you are advocating using a system which is technically complicated, practically unlikely and metaphysically questionable...how, for example, do you define the mass of a soul while being transported? As such I am inclined to say that the kT system has worked fine for 40 sessions, as has the EC system. The Coulomb system, aside from me needing to check the spelling every time I use it, failed the preliminary run of fabricating a pencil, let alone speculating into how you are going to store -illions of Coulumbs in a lapel pin ready to be deployed as a shield...or to fabricate neurotoxins.
  10. Other than physical manipulation
  11. I didn't see any other questions?? No directed at the SI anyway.
  12. Yes No http://forum.tip.it/topic/263182-hegemony/page__st__5860__p__4299561#entry4299561 It is in Spork's signature. Original Point: Final point:
  13. If you are gonna spice things up then you say in the open post that random events will happen...and you give an example of a typical random event. You don't suddenly start feeding false information for the next two weeks because you feel like it, or because the dice was a 1. Random events should add something to the game...not take over the game because you happen to be bored. Retech cuts down all the lamp posts in advance I point out lamp posts are lamp posts not monsters And stuff that doesn't kill people has a tendancy to be ignored, or swept aside as an annoyance....like 5,000 rebels appearing when your smallest army is 20,000...It doesn't add fun, it just hacks people off. No...the more respect a moderator commands the further people are willing to go before going 'This is stupid.' Moderator says: Your ship, carrying all your money, explodes randomly. If the mod has a habit of doing stuff for the lulz...hence unrespected...then people go 'Mod is being an idiot, this game is so terrible.' If the mod doesn't do anything for the lulz...hence respected...then people go 'Oh. Is their any evidence who did it?' Evidence of bad moderators are litered through the Tavern. On balance, myself and Dusty make bad players. People are under no obligation to listen to the moderator...The worst the mod can do is kick them out of the game...And if they aren't listen to the mod then that isn't really a big issue. I disagree with you saying red is blue...Please point out where I said this? And yet whenever such a system has been proposed in the past it has not inspired interest...Or has been shown to be quickly abusable and linear. As with Mather's Hegemony and Empire. I do look forward to whatever you come up with...I am just saying that if you go into this with the view that people will listen and accept a totally new system simply because the mod wants it...I would refer you to Sere's Hegemony, as that was pretty much a masterclass in what happens the mod played god...rather than servant. Also...I don't claim anything. A claim implies an absence of proof. Every Hegemony thus far is that proof.
  14. Following a highly eventful session the station there was a two month interval where various issues were resolved, also Happy New Year, its 2093(Overdue!) Earth, recovering from being Psionicly dominated spent the period finding inner calm. These new, deeper, insights into his mind gives him 5 Technobabble Tokens. Jeremiah, having got incredibly hacked off with the whole colonial governer bit, went hunting on Asgard, becoming feared, and respected, as the man who would have peace and order at any cost. His efforts, combined with work from the Government he now protected, allowed the final peaceful resolution of Asgard's remaining population. Splitting into three provinces, one of which was composed of the new 'Drake' Speices, posthumerously named after a dog he had once had( ), while the other two were made up of the surviving Humans. Bonsai spent the period in the computer, researching, giving him 10 free research points. Faust, who's near death experiance, and final removal and pacification of SUE, took him on a semi-spirital quest. In otherways it was a power trip, fuelled by food pills, PEB and a boatload of drugs of all varities. The overall effect, apart from resolving a resounding feeling of lose without SUE, and from being dead, was to increase his Psionic level by 6. Nero, being awesome, spent the time getting progressive drunker at various bars across the solar system. Wearing his Tricornered Hat, singing songs of old, and generally showing himself as a man's man, he has managed to attract rather a following, drawing out some 300 Terrans who were living in Oceania at the time of the crisis. Apep, being evil, fled into the solar wind after hiding out in one of the mining ships for a week. Whether he shall return remains to be seen. While cleaning out Drake's Room numerous puzzles were found, along with a number of traps, and a board saying: The Flaws of Chi's Transporter restriction Protocol 1) Transport Robots into room and remote control them 2) have someone else transport you into his room 3) Transport the room full of small objects while its occupied 4) Scan Chi's room 5) Transport all of the contents of Chi's room into the nearest empty room Chi, waking up with a scanner in his arm, completed his Space-Life-Long ambition of installing small shield generators in all of the rooms. He also built a computer core, scrap robot and small generator to power his own room independantly. As well as spending a month writing a foolproof anti-transporter protocol, which he then hardwired into the Unity Transporter. Theros spent the time writing a series of short stories entitled 'A Guide to being Comatose', which he published in Britian, netting him 1,000,000 EC in royalties. Lee, unfortunately did not find Aiden, she did however practice wielding her ThoughtBowStaff(TBS) allowing her unparalled use of it. The mysterious voice on the Comms spent the period healing the sick in Drake's Province, and easing the transformation for those left half transformed. This gave him an almost encyclopedic knowladge of Medicine, on top of his other specialisation. On top of that he knows almost everyone on Asgard, as both a trusted physician and as a bridge between Drake and Humanity. The SI, seeing all of these things as trivial, spent the period dealing with the far more interesting problems it had been left with...The classified orders that not even Jeremiah could open, a mysterious Swiss telegram and Terraforming Europa. The first of these has resulted in the destruction of a large part of Asgard...With Faust, Nero, Earth, Drake/Apep and Jeremiah all pursuing their own goals and objectives there was no one to shop it until it had been neigh but completed. The destruction of the North West arm had been mostly completed by Theros and Jeremiah, in their attempt to kill Jen, while the South West, North East and South East arms were destroyed purely by the SI in an attempt to gather the resources required, and then to fix the rest of the station and complete the other two tasks. The mysterious Swiss Telegram exists only as that, a mystery...To be unravelled at the cost of 10 Research Points. The Terraforming of Europa began after the British and Commonwealth finally demanded results from the Unity. With a temporary surplus of resources the SI removed the Food Pill crops, converting the biomass into compost and beginning asteroid bombardment of Europa, using asteroids from the Kuipner Belt, with aid from the British Navy. The progress has been slow, but fruitful, leading to a mass increase of 200%, a density increase of almost 300%, a temperature increase of 50 degrees Centigrade, and the formation of three continental masses. These masses are, however, submerged, and this is to be maintained, since the costs of boosting the magnetic field of Europa, while offsetting all the effects that will have due to Jupiter, would be astronomical...it is actually considerably cheaper to build the cities underwater, arcology style. While arcologies are still months away from beginning to be built, due to the current problem of the Alliance, resurgent Terran and American Empires, small scale settlement projects are underway. There was considerable doubt as to the stability of Europa, though the skeptics were arrested and now there is total support for the graduated move to Europa. Outside of terraforming the Solar Situation has stablised mildly. Britian, under strong pressure from voters to begin deporting Commonwealth Citizens to the Commonwealth, staged a number of reality TV shows, inviting British Families to live on Commonwealth bases. Despite strong protests by the civil licencing agency the broadcasts proceeded, showing almost daily raids by Alliance forces, with many scenes views described as 'Horrific in the strongest possible terms'. While the shows were widely condemned as being over hyped and unrealistic...despite being live in some instances...voter pressure has decreased on the issue of deporting Commonwealth Citizens. Pressure, instead, is mounting for Britian to defend the Commonwealth, though is still considered political suicide. There is also the matter that the British Fleet is on a par with the Alliance Fleet, so if the battle was joined there is a strong possiblity that the British would only end up drawing fire onto themselves as well. The Commonwealth is, however, just about holding its own, after a pair of destroyers were shot down by ground based cannons, but the situation is far from stable, with constant demands for more ships, more food and more defences...with a constantly dwindling budget. The Alliance goes from strength to strength, having trebled in size, with a booming manufacturing industry for ship parts, largely due to slave labour from captured Commonwealth Asteroids. It is, however, the Officer core of the Alliance which leads the boom. Half a year ago the rag tag bunch of bandits with perhaps a month's experiance between twenty men, now they boast, effectively, several years worth of tours. Beyond combat a society beyond piracy is forming, taking its cues from 19th Century Britian...Though there are few parralls as of yet. The Terran Federation, with the surface of Mars at their finger tips, have turned their gaze skywards under the leadership of Lord Dusty after a bitter war with the Russian colonists for dominance...and ultimately survival. While the war, the loss of Earth...and Lord Dusty's 'I am not the how guy, thats what I pay you for.' attitude...have left them temporarily stunted, it is only a matter of time before someone capable comes along to act as Adminstrator for the Empire...and then TFed shall surely reassert itself. America, though mildly shaken by its ordeal with the Unity Crew, has only become more miltartistic, developing the first atomspheric divers for use on Venus. The UN, as ever, sits on the sidelines of the system, filing reports and audits, ordering non-existant ships across space to prevent mining, reprimanding non-existant officers for not doing their duties...Commerating the brave, but non-existant, souls who have lost their non-existant lives in the line of duty. Asgard, with provinces: [hide][/hide] Population: 25,000 Drakes 45,000 Humans
  15. Couple of levels, couple of hundred kT. Horsecraft seems fine.
  16. Yup Puzzles. It is changed slightly, so you complete a set of puzzles for a set of points, rather than 1 to 1. And, generally speaking, tech gets shared out between the crew.
  17. Yeah, the battle games seem like the other alternative, along with random event cards or something. But we have never agreed on a single rule set to date, and Empire, which was basically Hegemony with ever concievable doodad figured out, failed because someone wanted sentance X to mean something else, so played a different game and complained their game didn't match everyone elses. And yeah, EU3 is a ready made scenario, so there is nothing to invent, which seems to be 1/3rd the fun of playing Hegemony, 1/3rd arguing about the inventions and 1/3rd playing the game.
  18. Backstory: Imagine Hegemony 2091: Russia has been at war with the Commonwealth of Australia and what not for a while...and throwing wave after wave of troops doesn't seem to be working any more since they have done that the last 90 years. So they called in the aliens because this is Hegemony and crackpot research is what we do. Aliens turned out to be just as backstabbing as humans, and were gonna cook Earth...for some nefarious purpose... Russian leaders were, as with Hegemony, blindly ignorant to the risks, and instead busied themselves building Castles in Space, because it sounded cool. As per normal Russia used their new super weapon, which has obvious risks, against their enemy while everyone watches. Then, when things go wrong everyone throws whatever research they have at the problem and hope something sticks. Including the dangerous and stupid 'Blackhole Gun', which solves the problem, creating a much larger problem in the form of a Black Hole...as the name suggests. Condensed last...5-10 sessions: Meanwhile the Space Powers, Britian and Unity...basically...go 'Oh noes' and begin evacuating Earth with the general idea that once you have 50 million starving, hungry and disease ridden people, it will be a synch. Britian then goes hmmm...we can deal with 30 million, and kills off 20 million people. The evacuees go WTH! And mutiny. Unity goes 200,000 is easy! Britian goes W/E, this is a headache. Chi goes, wouldn't it be better if my arm was a scanner. And hilarity continues.
  19. Though the game occassionally screws you over in some new and interesting way...Like Overextension modifer. Or countries that won't declare a white peace until war exaustion reachs 9...when they will happily give up 40% of their empire. Like Hegemony, only the flaws aren't fixable.
  20. Earth got sucked into a blackhole to stop an armada of alien ships coming in.
  21. Gern oil.... Say it aloud.
  22. Or you could check your graphics card...if that isn't illegal in some way I don't know about. If it is then I would suggest you burn your computer....It won't solve any of your problems, but it isn't illegal.
  23. Really...What needs to be done is someone come up with a game, not get bored and try to 'spice things up' and have a research system that is fair, without being dull. Ultimately the person running it needs to be respected...and respectful...enough that they can be unreasonable without fearing people are gonna stalk off because you rejected their silly idea. Or because their 1 man army died against a 2 man army. At the same time, not nerfing people to create balance, or making it innevitable for someone to win... Just need someone with the time, effort and above qualities...Which boils down to me and Dusty. Alternatively, we could just play EU3.
