The Hegemony (12th Feb = 2018, Part 2)
That would be a fairly interesting story, though, I think there would not be too much to do, since we would go around, shoot everything and then...

Cool, just making sure people are on the same page(or, as it were, different pages) Anywho Threads constantly die, and new ones spring up in their place.

The Hegemony (12th Feb = 2018, Part 2)
It is just experiance of roleplaying...people run out of ideas, or are afraid of starting new ideas because it disrupts the main story line...so the story ends up running 'Stuff is going on, character decides to travel to where everone else is for no explainable reason, character arrives, character hangs around then decides to go to where someone else is, they meet, they meet some other people, everyone had met up and....then they fight!' And so the story tends to become 1 story told 7 times in slightly different ways. The same is generally true with novels...everyone heads, inexplicably, for one point, they arrive and then they stick together from then on...or split off in groups and do specific missions. The stories tend to feel 'Godded' because unexpecting things are resolved so quickly... Think about Dungeoneering, there is no 'Godded' feeling because there is no overal goal, and, by miracle of Dusty trying to kill everyone at the start, groups didn't form too well and so lots of different stories emerged...generally that doesn't happen. So I am just warning that 'Decisive Battles' tend to wreck stories.

The Hegemony (12th Feb = 2018, Part 2)
Or we could just have a story that didn't have the 'hand of god' over it... 'Sally was a normal kid, but then she decided to join the army and, despite Britannia being totally seperate from Earth, was posted to Turkey, where, for some reason, seven other people arrived with similar stories...' Maybe a common theme could be the new Olympics being started, which could feature heavily in 'whatever character's' planet was held, but just be on the tv or something in all the others...

The Hegemony (12th Feb = 2018, Part 2)
I think, if we are going to do this, we should create a character which we can agree on, and then the environment they live in...since Terran Solider #03232 is going to have a pretty different life to Sally Jenkins, aged 9, of the Britannica Institute for the specifically able....Similarly the Licht will have a different story entirely. So there are alot of things 'up in the air'

The Hegemony (12th Feb = 2018, Part 2)
Probably gonna start a tonne of arguements, so I think it is a brilliant idea. =P No, seriously, it would be interesting, so I am game for writing something, perhaps we should decide on a character for the first chapter...a date and which Hegemony we are using would be awesome too(though if it is the first one my ability might be limited)

Sounds like a good idea, all threads which are above 100 pages, which die or finish, get stickied. If they are a series or something they will be merged though.

Anyway who, anyone wanting to pay their respects will have 3 days from now, then I will lock the thread and remove it. Just some random stuff from other languages Pesamenteiro - Portuguese: one who joins groups of mourners at the home of a dead person, apparently to offer condolences but in reality is just there for the refreshments. Kanjus Makkhicus - Hindi: a person so miserly that if a fly falls into his cup of tea, he'll fish it out and suck it dry before throwing it away. Tartle - Scottish: to hesitate when you are introducing someone whose name you can't quite remember. Hira Hira - Japanese: the feeling you get when you walk into a dark and decrepit old house in the middle of the night. Biritululo - Kiriwani, Papua New Guinea: comparing yams to settle a dispute. Poronkusema - Finnish: the distance equal to how far a reindeer can travel without a comfort break. Pisan Zapra - Malay: the time needed to eat a banana. Layogenic - Tagalog, Philippines: a person who is only goodlooking from a distance. Gattara - Italian: a woman, often old and lonely, who devotes herself to stray cats. Vrane Su Mu Popile Mozak - Croatian: crazy, literally "cows have drunk his brain".

The Hegemony (12th Feb = 2018, Part 2)
Yeah, I don't mind slack, I mind developing uber technology...difference of paying 1 trillion per underwater city and 5 Billion for 100 is more than a bit of slack, if you want to develop something that is far in advance you pay 750 billion per city. Because, really, it takes me about half an hour...since most things are Squares, Cubes, Spheres or Hemispheres, in terms of Volume and Surface area...and then searching for prices of the materials...Its not exactly overkill to find the stuff out, even if you had come at it without really working anything out and said '250 Billion' I would probably let it slide because that would take at least 10 years, and so the game would slowly progress. Anyway, I am thinking about the Civ-Col hybrid game, since, for the most part, it doesn't require moderation it should be fine, even though I am reading for, and writing, my essay at the moment. If people want another game out at the moment though.

The Hegemony (12th Feb = 2018, Part 2)
The international community has a memory like a sive...Just look at Japan after WW2....Or Germany...or anywhere really, within 5 years in most cases, 20 at the upper end, people's opinions have totally changed...unless they happen to still be doing something offensive, like Communism existing  Anyway, if people are too bloodthirsty then the game will die anyway...since the population of the planet will hit 1 billion without uber weapons...
-
The Hegemony (12th Feb = 2018, Part 2)
Or creating weapons which were not globally destructive...Or limited destructability...Ie dropping 1 Anthrax bomb, rather than carpet bombing with anthrax...
-
The Hegemony (12th Feb = 2018, Part 2)
I am far happier with total realism.
-
The Hegemony (12th Feb = 2018, Part 2)
Or we just go with the realism...Since realistically, had Retech been appoint Absolute Ruler of Japan and had conducted the research that he said he conducted, then he would have weapons which he said he had, and would do the damage which I said they would do. So, like Ross said, logically work in through... Dice really don't work with this game, since the alterations between a double twenty and a double one would be a mass driver which was 46 kilometers long to shoot people into orbit, or a mass driver 46 kilometers long to shoot people into orbit, but required 30% more energy... Since, as you know, the energy requirement is already ridiculously high, this is like pointing out that your bread is mouldy when the loaf is on fire. Dusty the choice is: Stopping the attack 'Dusty: Archimage is picking on Retech again', 'Retech: Its not fair that Archimage is always picking on me', 'Sere: Archi, can you go easier on Retech I don't want him to quit.' Retech complains, Sere intervenes and gives Retech back Indonesia, Ross gets annoyed with Retech and quits, since there is no real coming back from that, Rocco follows suit and the game collapses because there is no competition any more, since all weapons are outlawed. Verses Letting the attack happen 'Dusty: Archimage is picking on Retech again, 'Retech: Its not fair that Archimage is always picking on me', 'Sere: Oh my God, Retech is being stupid again.' World is devestated and hopefully everyone clears off to America and learns a valuable lesson about people being idiots, failing that the game is tied up in a knot and is allowed to die, allowing a different game to grow up in its place, preferably where people see the dangers of expanding too quickly and of virus bombing, with the outside chance of Sere intervening and declaring the attacks didn't happen in an attempt to stop people quiting, which might lead to the game limping on for another few weeks, which unfortunately is what happened. Verses: Letting Retech have his own way 'Ross: I am quiting', 'Rocco: I am quiting', 'Dungeonal: I am quitting', 'Archi: I am quiting', 'Sere: Oh my God, Retech is being stupid again and everyone is quiting.' The game falls apart, Sere intervenes and kicks Retech off, but too late to stop Ross, Dungeonel and Rocco leaving, and the game dies and a new game starts where everything is banned and from that point on any time anyone suggests a stratagy other than throwing troops at each other people scream its an uber weapon and ban it. So, in summery, I think Hegemony needs to die and then be left alone while people play other games, then when they come back to Hegemony in a couple of months they are not obsessed with end gaming...Also perhaps they would be more willing to listen when the moderator says 'I don't think that is a good idea' rather than blithly carrying on because they have decided it is a good idea. Mather yours is a specific case which is wholy unlikely, if there was something which was fathomable, though unproven by science, say the creation of a room temperature superconductor, then fair enough, dice should be used to define how effective it is, within the preset limits that science predicts. But when it comes to a matter of redefining the laws of physics based on a theory which has no evidence in the real world, and thus speculating as to how it would work is impossible, then I do not think that dice should be used....any more than if someone was to post 'I discover magic', that I would roll on it to find out if they had indeed.

The Hegemony (12th Feb = 2018, Part 2)
One way or another Hegemony was doomed. Grim and Dusty seeming to have given up playing, prefering to occational turn up...Similarly I had departed as Switzerland...Ico and Paul seemed to have given up in all the major ways, Sere was preoccupied with the break up of the Federation, Rocco and Ross had come to the conclusion that the game was unplayable while Japan held supreme power and Dungeonal agreed.... In all the major ways the game had expanded far too fast, as Ross had predicted, which killed the game... Partly my fault for charging Switzerland in the jolly jaunt around Europe, then around Africa, but mainly that we were all too stubborn to give up, convincing ourselves we 'needed' to take down anyone with any power...Happened to me, happened to Retech, would have happened to Mather...the moment someone starts to get ahead they need to be pruned back, but crushing someone who is in ascendance is a bad idea, since they have already made up their mind where they are going, and will get there regardless of what happens...

The Hegemony (12th Feb = 2018, Part 2)
Actually I spent the best part of the 'crisis' trying to convince Retech not to Virus Bomb the world, going so far as to ignore instructions until he catagorically stated 'And please, no more things about how my soldiers refuse. I'll just keep looking until I find the most sadistic group of soldiers if I have to, like the people who WANT to mass-murder people.' I didn't really see that I had grounds to do anything else...since starting a civil war in Japan would have been completely ripped to shreads by everyone as me 'hating Retech'...so I kept him fully informed of what would probably happen, he said he was quiting and so didn't really care...but naturally if I had said 'Retech is going to quit so we will ignore the attacks' people would have freaked out at me 'You can't get rid of players!!!' Options on that? Have people scream at me, or have people scream at me...or just respond to what people say, and leave all the game balancing stuff to Sere. [hide] Ok....So the plan is: Destroy Australia's, Italy's, Turkey's Agriculture Via Stratos Jet Fire Bombing Assuming you are not invading Indonesia since that is being 'held' by the UN until elections and such can be held...which is the long winded way of saying they are still GOING to be in the Federation, unless you do something to turn them against you. Guinea will not rise up against Australia, since Australia hasn't actually done anything, as of yet anyway...and has been flooded with propaganda about how Japan attacked Australia...ect, ect....Basically they are Apathetic about the thing because they are... Attacking North Korea is probably not terribly sensible, since they were perhaps the only country, other than yourself, with the capacity to launch chemical weapons enmass, but if you like. Antharax will probably get out of hand and end up devestating the planet, hence why I am apprehensive about launching the attacks without you being fully aware of what will happen. I doubt it will frighten the population...any more than going into a school and shooting up people's children, would frighten them...they have already lost everything, so whats the point in going on living when the manics who did it are still out there....course thats if they are still alive, which is unlikely. Such as? The UN cannot do anything to Turkey since it is not a member...Apart from a war, which no one wants. It seems unlikely...primarily because the war, to their mind, will not end with the invasion of Japan, thus it is only Japan's urge to reconquer territories lost...so either they will succeed, or they will fail and the POWs will be returned...either way staying alive seems like a better option....Also these are not brain washed troops, thus they are not going to kill themselves without cause. Korea- http://en.wikipedia....#Postwar_period South Vietnam probably enjoyed the American period...then it ended. UN- Depends, if you go genocidal then they will probably declare war, otherwise they probably won't do a huge amount....Can't speak for the Security council though. Economical- Just remember that Japan is now suffering an Economic Recession...so Even if South Korea wants to return to the prosperity...that prosperity doesn't exist any more.(If it ever existed, which I am against but still) Indonesia- Unless you go genocidal and scare Indonesia...or someone else intervenes there, it should filter back to you when the UN feels that you are responsible enough...so Maybe the UN can still wield some power over you... Err...issue on ballons...they deflate over time... You would be constantly sending ballons up...and if one of them were to be destroyed by something...airplane for instance... it would drop missiles and lasers on Japan itself... Also, how do ballons 'move in front' of missiles... unless they have some sort of jet engine, which would slow them down considerably, since a ballon is not aerodynamic in any way... Also the 'Layers' wouldn't protect from an ICBM attack...since an ICBM goes out of the Atomsphere and then re-enters....Thus bypassing the ballons entirely....Unless you plan to create some sort of bizzare 'cage' around Japan and related nations, which would totally screw your trade... and would be blatently obvouis when planes started exploding in mid-air... The whole idea seems entirely farsical.... Also, if a plane hit one of the ballons, and one of your 'mass-murdering nutters' was on the controls they would immediately assume it was war and start firing Anthrax at the world.... http://en.wikipedia...._Warning_System In any case knowing that there 'are' missiles out there is pretty much a given... since Spy Sats would spot them...as would radar systems and all that Jazz...An ICBM relies on being fast, not on being stealthed or whatever. There are quite major 'kinks' in the plan... If you want to use it then you can pretty much be assured of Japan going downhill VERY quickly. There is not that much to be 'advanced' about...A laser will always take a significant amount of energy, and will always be incredibly accurate....Beyond that.... Its not going to vote to 'Join' Italy, just to allow Italy to co-operate with them until they are ready to renew or end their commitment to the Federation. Anyway its 4 days away... But if you want to then sure, you can blow up parts of the world. Well if you like. There will probably be people who refuse to genocide the world...especially when the best Japan can hope for is complete destruction of the home islands...If you are putting it solely in control of the racists and such then fair enough. Well, its up to you. Japan won't survive though...even if, somehow, you don't get wiped out in the intial counteracts...you have Virus Bombed the world....Practically killied 1/2 to 19/24ths of the population of the planet....Anyone with an illegal firework will want to destroy Japan. Wiping them off the map isn't going to really be an option unless they actually stop playing. [/hide]

The Hegemony (12th Feb = 2018, Part 2)
No one forced you to play Sere's version, and nothing stops you creating your own... Actually Dusty is probably right, I have stood in the way of far too many schemes for the game to work...The game is usually driven forwards by people being totally outrageous, screaming alot, then everyone accepting their own compromise...Leading, innevitably, to nations which were simultanously rich and poor, spent heavily on military and socially, focusing both of air and land and sea and space, while being completely uncompetitive in all fields, before eventually announcing that they have being building a super star destroyer for the last 2 years and are now producing twenty a year...And of course with billions of invisible troops stationed across the entire globle and a comfortable majority of 110%. Reminds me of a conversation I was having the other day when I and a friend saw people mopping a carpet...naturally this seemed odd to us, and thus my friend suggested that perhaps it would be of benefit(I often have a very fluted way of speaking, especially when being sardonic) if someone was to invent some kind of device for sucking dirt out of the fibres of the carpet, on which point I observed that they happened to be leaning on thier mops and talking, thus some sort of device that sucked the dirt from the fibres of the carpet would be of the upmost detriment, since then they could not lean, nor could they hear each other, and indeed, if such a device were to be in operation then only one fellow should need to be present for the preceedings. Far better, I ventured, that some kind of brush, with a long handle, could thus be created, which would innevitably lead to less wet carpets, while maintaining the slovanly workload so endering to those of the lower orders. Upon which point my friend retorted that then others of the lower orders could not discuss the moisture of the carpets, which I furthered as a most worthwhile venture when considering the difficulties of the lower classes in petite talk, indeed that I had oft observed one noting the wetness of the carpet by the sound that it made, then bending down to feel the carpet, drawing comment of his or her peers, which began the most illuminating of discussions. My friend agreed that it was most gratifying to watch such conversations being carried out, and thus that our foolishness at expressing surprise of the mopping of the carpets must, indeed, have come from out public school upbringing(Private school for the American's amongst us). I agreed and suggested that I had heared papa talking of a new device for just such occassion being developed across the pond, to which my friend inquired as to the nature, which I responded that I did not know thusly, though papa had said that it was called a 'Sprinkler', and it would protrude from the ground so as to project water in a radius of variable sizes. My friend nodded thusly and said that she knew of such a device and had seen it exhibited at royal ascot, to which the Prince of Wales had shown most frightful interest in its nature of erupting with water whenever anyone passed within its range. At which point we just giggled for some minutes, waiting for the other to turn up so that we could start work on the assignment we needed to write. (Clarification on the above: I am not, and hopefully never shall be, a member of the upper classes, it was purely fiction we were spouting, created by the seeming insanity of two people mopping a carpet)

The Hegemony (12th Feb = 2018, Part 2)
You were not already pulling back, you had decided that your empire was going to exist, regardless of what people would have realistically though about such an empire existing... Means absolutely nothing....Its like saying 3/5ths of all thingums is cheese...Your 'Military Budget' didn't exist so saying 80% went on the navy is meaningless... As explained at the time, your fleets were around 160 miles apart, with a 50 mile radar...So 80 miles out of every 480 were unpatrolled for around 8 hours at a time... Also having 90 patrols twice the size of another countries fleet is unrealistic in of its self... ...It was the first draft of an idea... Far more reasonable that we had a realistic system where everything you tried to do involved raising taxes or something...
