MY questions to extremest in fundamentalism...
I would definately do that. When I get my life in order and have enough money, it's a buddhist's life in Tibet for at least 3-6 months. :P A little hut on the side of a mountain. The serenity...

Motivation For Revision.
I'm having similar problems at the moment. Can I advise anyone in highschool with motivational issues to get them sorted before you go to uni/college if you choose too... 8 weeks in and hardly and study whatsoever. Not proud of it, but I know I'll be back on track next semester (no more maths or physics ever!!)

MY questions to extremest in fundamentalism...
Try radiometric dating, not rock layers. The layers of rock give you a comparative age, not a number like a radioactive decay formula can. Go for a broader range of non-christian sources and you'll get a more accurate picture. wouldn't everything be classified as "simple" if you break down each individual piece and it's purpose? the complexity is the when it works together Of course, I'm just saying on the fundamental level, there's nothing wierd or impossible about it ocurring naturally when the compounds that make you up act in the way they do due to thier natural electrical interactions. [/hide] doesn't it take proteins to make DNA and DNA to make proteins? (i havn't studied any higher lvl biology than high school...so i am no where near "qualified" to argue)...just asking a question :) DNA codes for protiens, and some code to make DICER (code name for a newly discovered amino acid that turns on/off genes). (and some are supposudly non-coding) DNA replicates itself by being zipped open by a polymerase and then matching nucleotides attach to the zipped up ends. This process requires amino acids, but not protiens. (That is how DNA is replicated) Well, DNA polymerase is an enzyme, which is a protien, not just amino acids. I can see the argument you're getting at, mage, a chicken or the egg dealey. I understand, but could you entertain that at the beginning of life, it wasn't as clear cut, mechanical or as similar as it is now. I couldn't answer how the fix the problem, though.

Coincidentally, these days there's increasing focus on how cells come together to form organs, systems and then organisms.

MY questions to extremest in fundamentalism...
As is my understanding, everything in a cell has a purpose due to it's electrical uniqueness. That's as much as I can boil it down, which makes it pretty simple. Electrical interactions give a conformational shape in protiens which can form enzymes whose active sites interact electrically with substrates. Hydrogen bonds form due to the electrically positive and negative regions at the ends of nitrogenous bases in DNA/RNA. A lipid bilayer, which forms around every cell on the planet, is arranged according to electrically negative and positive regions, the hydrophobic ends pointing in and hydrophillic pointing out. Protiens lodge in the cell membrane and allow certain compounds through due to thier structure. Subsequent conformational changes in the protien transporting these compounds occur due to electrical interactions. Positives and negatives is as simply as I can put it. It looks complex to us, but it's all got purpose due to structure and lack of electrical neutrality.

- MY questions to extremest in fundamentalism...
I'm not all that keen on fundamentalism, but then again, everyone has thier beliefs, no matter how silly they seem to me. I must say it is refreshing to hear magekillr and barihawk throw around some fresher views instead of going with regurgitated arguments. Myself, I'm keen on facts. Whatever I can know and reason. What a gift.- Truth... Is it worth all the angst?
Im not at all suggesting that you are trying to debunk. The statment you bolded should tell you that. My whole last paragraph is essentially exactly what you just said. I didnt go write an essay on it because alot of things are being assumed in that last paragraph. Reread it and see if you get what I'm saying. Sorry, my bad. :wall: How about that. I'm 18 and my reading comprehension skills are still questionable... :? :P Yeah, I can see what you're saying now, and agree, but as for factual conjecture, microevolution is a fact. As cold and hard as they come. I'd be willing to concede a degree of conjecture for macroevolution, however.- ANZAC day
umm they used to be 10X harder lol and they were standard rations in gallipoli i'm fairly sure but i don't remember Yeah Anzac Buscuits are awesome! I believe a lot of them were baked back here at home by the Wives of the Soldiers and sent over into the warfront in ration packs. They don't go stale quickly and they taste really good. Pretty much my knowlege of it. Made by diggers wives as ration food. Awesome biscuits. :- ANZAC day
Or you just chose not to through your selfish and ignorant ways. Grow up. And also learn how to spell properly so you don't seem like an even more immature [bleep]. Dude...That wasn't nessicary. So...I made a mistake and sounded like a jerk...I'm not having a good day...Trust me. And the spelling....I posted that in a rush (and this thread isn't about spelling, so lay off it.), and if you want to know...I'm allowed an opinion, and i should be allowed to express whatever views I have. I respect the Australians and New Zealanders who fought, but that war wasn't good for my family, I almost feel like i'm celebrating the deaths of my ancestors. Also...Calling me a [bleep], shows your not too mature either. =; So lay off it, i apologised. Think of the bigger picture. As I said, freedom is a privalege, not a right. People effectively died for your freedom and liberal way of life. There is a connection, albeit a these days weaker one (although still traditional and symbolic). People died fighting for the allies and for thier country, that being Australia or New Zealand in the case of the ANZACS. They DIED for you and the ideals of this nation which you hold dear. Surely, that must mean something to you.- ANZAC day
Or you just chose not to through your selfish and ignorant ways. Grow up. And also learn how to spell properly so you don't seem like an even more immature [bleep]. Some people are ignorant through none of thier own choosing. I agree with everyone, we should all know about the day and respect it. I don't think you should have insulted him, though (that's if he sincerely is ignorant to the day and the meaning of it).- ANZAC day
Then you really need to pull your head in and show some respect. I'll go with that sentiment. To DOOMY - Whether you know it or not, out attitude of fighting against axis powers gave our country character and aided in our freedom. You can either take it as a day off and shun the people who died in the name of keeping that privalege or rather at least be thankful and respectful. Liberty is a privalege, not a right. People died in the name of keeping that privalege alive for all Australians (and New Zealanders, to be technically correct :P ).- Cricket World Cup
Having umpired cricket - it's not exactly easy. Any calls in particular that you seem to think they really screwed up with? Umpiring isn't easy when theres a ball flying down at 140km/h+ and then you have to make a decision on the spot. The thing about the whole 'armchair umpiring' modern phenomenon is that we have the advantage of numerous camera angles and hindsight. It's never as easy as TV makes it look. As much as I love blasting umpires and referees, I always keep this in the back of my mind.- Who do you think is the best drummer ever?
You're right about that, although imo, if you have good rhythm then it really isn't hard to be good at drums Yes, in your opinion. Play something by Lamb of God or Tool on drums and I'll be impressed. From a guitarists perspective, thier drums are harder then thier guitars (apart from Ashes of the Wake. That song is INSANE on guitar [well, the lead section is]). I know what you're thinking though, I don't play drums so couldn't accurately compare them. True, but I know complex drumming when I hear it. Oh and rhythm is one thing, but the drums take a lot of coordination. Something that I personally don't have much of, which is why I play guitar. :P- ANZAC day
My great grandad fought at Gallipoli and France. He was a sniper and luckily survived the whole ordeal. He's dead now though. Personally I think war is the sadest thing ever and I thank my lucky stars on days like these that, through others sacrafices, I'm able to be free and live in a very liberal, proud, and for the most part friendly nation. Lest we forget so god help us we never make these mistakes again. On a sidenote, anyone here seen the movie 'Gallipoli'? The one with Mel Gibson. It's pure genious and I highly reccomend it. It culminates in one of the bloodiest battles of the Gallipoli campaign - 'The Nek' It was a stuff up and watching it in the movie and hearing real stories about ANZACS saying 'farewell cobber' as they knew they were going to be slaughtered by the Turks is very sad indeed. I mean tearjerker material.- Truth... Is it worth all the angst?
What a wrap. Thanks. :P I'd be hard pressed to say anything foul of you, most probably because you're a thoroughly decent person. *hugs all round* lol. If you're suggesting my drive to discuss evolution is to debunk religion, you'd be way off. I don't do it as a religious discussion, although, inevitably, they always end up that way. I'm interested in the science of it, which is that essentially microevolution is fact (look at population genetics) and macroevolution is the only hypothesis (or should I be more lenient and say theory?) we have for biological diversity which has evidnce in nature which suggests it happened. As for the bold, yeah, I'd hoped we could (as a race) all reach that point, at least. It's not that I'm asking everyone to accept it, I'm asking everyone to accept that science favours evolution and to just have faith that we're wrong and not dwell on it with some sort of fevered last line defence as if we're attacking religion. Religion isn't the problem. It's fine. It's the ideology that science and atheists go hand in hand and each attempt to systematically destroy religion which bugs me.- Berlin 1961 - Baghdad 2007
History proves that walls are often very successful. There are occassions when walls have worked historically but at what cost? All it serves to do is further segrate people who already share resentment & eventually there tends to be a reaction of some kind (as I'm sure there will be at some time in the West Bank). Yes if you go back hundreds of years, walls were probably the best non-military action to preserve peace but nowadays society we are alot more co-dependant on outsiders. In short I think walling great big areas is a short term fix that more often than not just covers up the long term issues & create more problems than they prevent in the long run. Basically exactly what I was going to say. The difficult thing about the Sunni Shi'ite issue is that they would have to go to and try and change the roots of thier cultures. It's almost as it's an underlying cultural loathing of each other.- Group Work?
I had a problem recently, except I was the liability. It was on physics, which my knowlege of is basically zero (but I did ask our groups questions and do a little googling). I'm doing a chemistry assignment with the same people, though, and can actually help this time. :P- armenian genocide
Well, ANZAC day for us Aussies and Kiwis (tomorrow, April 25th) was a wartime failure at Gallipoli, Turkey (WW1). There were lots of stuff-ups and tragic deaths yet there were overriding themes of mateship, courage, hardiness, resolve and inginuity. On that last point, the evacuation from the peninsula took the Turks totally off guard (with rifles timed to fire with water drips, for example) and resulted in next to no deaths from memory. And yeah, we get the day off. :P Any excuse for a barbeque and can of fosters :P Contrary to popular belief, fosters is often not the beer of choice in Australia. It is, for the commoner, probably VB, Tooheys or XXXX (4 ex) depending on where you live.- Truth... Is it worth all the angst?
I can see why you would choose faith over science and I've never really had a problem with that. It's just (not referring to you in particular) that on odd occassions, people of faith will see it as thier duty to debunk science. That's where the conflict is (well for me, anyway). The good thing about science is that it debunks itself. The good thing about faith is that you know the truth, irrespective of falliable science. Well, that's the way people should look at it, I believe For me, truth lies i what I can know. That's really as simply as I can put it. The last point you make is pretty spot on, I'd say. I'm sure you could discuss it on a non contentious issue, say, the human rights movement? Aside from that, many major scientific advancements had the guy/girl proposing thier idea laughed at like crazy. As for all of us guys ganging up on you in my topic, it's just the nature of the debate at the present time. Don't let it get to you, is my message. I, for one, would be interested to hear what you have to say on the issue but there's no need to bust your gut trying to reply in time. If you genuinely believe that it's wrong, I'm genuinely keen to hear reasons why.- Who do you think is the best drummer ever?
Chris Adler of Lamb of God. I'm going to see them play live this saturday!!!!! =P~ Danny Carey. Oh my god. I finally got my [wagon] into gear and learnt Lateralus by Tool (guitar), among other Tool songs, and in the second clean guitar section listen to when the drum beat kicks in. That's what I call some fine composition. : =P~ x 1,000,000- Truth... Is it worth all the angst?
Probably seems that way. No. I've never really dwelled on anything here and generally never care what others think of me. When I say what do you think of me, I'm asking do you think I'm pressing my point too much (I probably wasn't overly clear there). Perhaps I'm just to empathetic. And in regards to Sumpta, yeah, I've realised progressively more this place isn't where to come to persuade others or where to find truth.- armenian genocide
