  1. Runecrafting is one of the only "refinement" skills that makes a profit - so I wouldn't be surprised if eventually you lose cash doing it. Anyways, that's neither here nor there. The new Achievement Diary rewards contain Jagex's way of throwing us a bone. 100 pure essence a day, thousands of people doing it... prices are bound to fall some. I really expect some change soon. You can see that Jagex thinks there's a problem, even though they're saying no. They capped prices on some GE items - actions speak louder than words. I'm willing to bet that they collected data on the effects of the vial/eye cap (and if they didn't, they're bigger idiots than I thought!). This data probably shows that while they made these items more affordable, less people were able to get them due to no supply. I think they'll probably pull that trick at least once more before they realize they can't just adjust prices willy-nilly. That's when we'll see bigger changes made. It does seem to me like Jagex has a strict development schedule, and that they don't prioritize updates well. That means that even if they plan on updating PvP to remove the massive cash influx, it's probably six months to a year out - because they're not going to stop work on other updates to do it. And to an extent, that's fair.
  2. Basically, you're saying that inflation isn't so bad because you're a producer of some of the items that are doing well with respect to inflation. This isn't true for many, if not most players. Again, imagine you're a new player. You want to get 70 attack and get a whip, right? But what's this, the prices go up every day? That's a good way to lose new players.
  3. You know, the name phenomenon isn't restricted to one race and class. Parents all over the place name their kids dumb things because it's trendy and "unique". I can't tell you how many poor little girls I know who have names that look like a respectable name that had a collision with a train full of vowels. The thing with names is that they start out in the "upper classes" and work their way down. Names that now evoke "trailer park hooker" used to evoke "Ivy-league bound". I hate all of it. My children will have respectable names. For example, my first son will be named after my dad and my wife's dad, and my first daughter will be named after her great grandmother. Poor kids. Poor stupid parents, riding on the popular bus.
  4. Slightly off topic, but the rest of you need to understand how true this is (speaking as a current software engineer). We get so bogged down in the details that it becomes hard to see the big picture. From the development diaries, it sounds as if the people responsible for coding the update are the same as those conceptualizing the update. Bad move on Jagex's part, IMO, but that's how it is. Mara, I hope to see YOU post more, too! :-D
  5. 2000 Total Party When: Saturday October 24th 2009, 10:00 PM EST (GMT -5) World: 43 (F2P World) Where: Meet at Draynor bank What: Celebrate with me on meeting my goal of 2000 total at less than 90 combat! I'll be getting 99 woodcutting and 99 crafting, as well! Private chat will be ON.
  6. Because they were in danger of being sued. RWT wasn't the big "real world" issue - credit card fraud was.
  7. Well, supposedly it's F2P as well - but I'm thinking music in general is the next skill. In my mind, this isn't the first hint of it.
  8. The people that complained are, for the most part, the same ones that trick. [As an aside, my problem with the potions (and I say this with 99 herblore) was that damage output in RS is too high anyways, and mitigation too low. The max hit is already much too high.] Bitter medicine, but Jagex needs to have a stone countenance and give the medicine anyways.
  9. That's correct. What we have here is almost a pure Adam Smith Rational Choice situation, with only minor near-term externalities (to the offender). It's in our best interest to 76k, why would we do otherwise? Classic "free rider" problem. Textbook, even. It's in my best interest to 76k (free ride), but if everyone does it we're screwed. Who'd have ever thought RS would be a place to see such wonderful examples of social theory, eh? Jagex has to channel that rational self-interest into a less destructive course. I'd suggest high-level untradeable items that take lots of work and provide lots of reward, while at the same time removing the ability to "trick". Thus, the rational thing to do is to seek the high-level items that can't be bought.
  10. Great posts, guys. Chay, we need more new Tip It members like you. I hope you find yourself welcome here, and continue to post such carefully constructed posts. Now: TS, sadly, I think you're correct. New players ARE going to come in and find the slope much too steep for themselves. Currently, it seems that the items that are adjusting "appropriately" with inflation are those that high-leveled players can collect - namely, rare drops. That leaves a new player almost totally without recourse. Sure, raw materials are increasing as well, but not quickly. To most of RS (not you guys!): Merch clans, though I detest them, aren't creating cash from whole cloth. They're just riding the waves, for the most part. They'll only get prices as high as people are willing to pay (with the exception of others in their clan). Do you think pure essence sits where it does (when stable) due to merch clans? No, it sits there because people are willing to pay that much for it. In the end, the rich get richer and the poor stay the same. The thing is, these "trickers" aren't hoarding their cash - they're flooding the market with it. Therefore I don't count them in the "rich". For my solution, I am thinking of buying everything I might ever need from the GE (that I am too lazy to obtain) NOW, and then not participating in the economy anymore. I'm not sure if I have the cash for this - I need too many adamant bars for 99 smithing, and WAY too many dragon bones for 99 prayer. Then again, I could just DIY it. Conversely, I think I might stop working "consumption" skills and start focusing on production again. Either way, I want to be done buying stuff from the GE.
  11. I've been desiring that Arhien update for a long time now!
  12. Temple of Light. Drops you right at the dead slave.
  13. Agreed. That's why I wonder if again, the cure might be worse than the illness (as in removing the wilderness to fix RWT). Let's consider for a moment - what's going to happen if Jagex doesn't intervene and change the status quo? Where is the logical conclusion?
  14. Yeah really, the small updates on the side are really awesome. I am hoping for a nice resizeable interaface soon so I can play on my TV!
  15. You know TS, I'm starting to wonder if Jagex is turning a blind eye with a plan in mind. What caused me to think this? I've gotten so fed up with the GE that I've started... doing it myself more. Perhaps that's the desired goal? I mean, you know things are FUBAR if you can't buy basic materials (iron ore) at max. So what did I go? I went to Yanille and mined the 400 that I needed. For some things, Jagex, that's reasonable. However, it doesn't work for things like pure essence. Wait, did I just imply Jagex is devious? Right, my bad. I'm sure it's just a lack of understanding of how game dynamics function.
  16. I'd like to be able to filter specific forums from my New Content feed. For example, I don't do clans - and new clan posts seem to make up at least 50% of the posts. I'd like to be able to filter any clan board posts out of my feed. Thanks, J
  17. I really love the good points intermixed with the utter bullcrap in this. Truth, though the simulation is good enough in decent random number generators (RNG). Utter bullcrap. This implies that specific accounts are luckier than others. More bullcrap. Randoms were triggered by bot-like behaviour, not by RNG. Specifically, I was able to get Maze randoms every time by fletching in a specific way. I got a maze every 4 loads of bows, if I recall. Never anything else. Mixed bag. You are statistically not likely to fail to get your 1 in 1000 drop if you try 150k times, sure - but there's a vanishingly small chance that you won't. The real issue here has to do with which RNG Runescape uses.
  18. Well, 98 Woodcutting today, on Ivy. 99 WC + 99 Craft = 2000 Total Level. According to consensus, this will be be second time someone has hit 2000 total @ 88 combat. The first was a no-defense low-prayer pure with 99 attack, strength, range, hp, and mage. In other words, a few hundred combat-related levels more than I have. So my skill-related total is higher. I wish now I had gone the "pure" route so that I could max out a little higher sub-90. Oh well.
  19. I seem to have horrible luck with drops. Maged almost 1k irons/steels, no dragon drop at all. Never had a level 3 clue worth more than 100k. 100 Barrows runs, no drop. It's just random though, sadly. However, it makes me wonder how Jagex seeds their random number generator, and if perhaps they wrote it themselves.
  20. Days off can't be overestimated. However, Stormrage's article was far more rational in my mind. Then again, I do love using "real world" theories to model RS behaviour (= Giant Dork), so any economic article that's even half reasonable is great.
  21. Based on what happened with vials and newts, it wouldn't surprise me if Jagex resets the prices on essence - which fixes nothing.
  22. Problem is, the prices are artificial and so are highly volatile. It might be worth it to unload your kingdom daily and put them on the GE while speculation lasts - which, as far as I can tell, is nearing an end.
