Haha, can't say I picked up the subtle humour. Thanks for correcting yourself.

It really is a mystery why people seem to think you're a good poster. It's because he is, and he's also right. Many artists these days can't sing for their lives. One example of this is the infamous Miley Cyrus. May I go on? But I also agree that I can find some music like that enjoyable. People like you fail to understand that different genres of music have different strengths and weaknesses, and if you are to analyse whether or not an artist is good or bad, you have to do it in relation to their genre. If you were to analyse a Pop artist's skill based on musicianship/guitarwork they would obviously come off as terrible, as that's not what Pop is about. Pop is about the catchiness and how likeable the music is. While I agree that certain artists--namely those who don't write their own music--perhaps do not deserve the fame they receive, to criticize the entire genre because of that is foolish. There are many Pop artists out there who are talented (even if not at singing, then at composing/producing), and deserve the fame they receive.

Music that makes you want to kill yourself (not emo)
Intriguing replied to ElkNight's topic in Off-Topic
1. He was simply listed three popular bands that were around prior to 1988. 2. It's quite probable that that you don't listen to my music, as Classic Rock is just about the only genre I don't listen to (with the exception of obscure sub-genres of genres I don't know as much about... and Polka). You really can't say you hate the vast majority of modern music, as you haven't listened to it. It has become quite apparent that you have only listened to what is popular at the moment. Popular music is generally as such for its catchiness more than anything else. It's not like there isn't good music that is also popular, but the music that you hear on MTV on the radio is generally on there because it's appreciated by people who enjoy music for the catchiness, not the musicianship or depth of the lyrics. Hence why you seem to think all modern music has lyrics about whiny middle-class teenagers. It seems a bit unfair to base all music post-1988 on Lady Gaga or Nickelback. 3. Though Indie music may have started as a tag for bands who were unsigned or on independent record labels, it has evolved into a genre that has little relevance to what label the band is on, e.g. Death Cab for Cutie is signed on Warner, and The Strokes are signed on Sony BMG. 4. Well, yes, you are bigoted. It's interesting to me that you have yet to attack the actual musicality of modern Rock, you've only attacked the lyrics, but that's an aside. I'm not arguing the lack of talent that is present in the music played on a lot of radio stations, I just think you're missing out on a lot of great music by cutting yourself off from anything written in the past twenty years. You can't honestly say it's reasonable to think that no good musicians/composers have written music in the past twenty years. As for why I'm so concerned with your musical preference.. good point. I have no idea. Based on that, I'll leave you alone now. -
Music that makes you want to kill yourself (not emo)

1. You're totally right. SilverSword only listens to MTV music. 2. So there is not a single piece of electronic music that has any musical substance in it? 3. Why do you keep using that "example"? In all honesty, I think you'd be hard pressed to actually give us any examples of bands whose lyrics show any similarity to that, except perhaps some Pop-Punk. However, SilverSword was talking about Indie, so that hardly has any relevance. If you show us that you are a bigoted 14-year-old who--although they try their hardest to pretend they do--has no knowledge of music, you will be treated as such. -

Don't give yourself that much credit. A good, or even half-decent music critic would analyse different artists and genres from a musical basis. What you have done is simply base your shallow opinion of recent musicians on ridiculous stereotypes that do little more than show that you know absolutely nothing about music. That is honestly how I feel. I don't listen to much new stuff, and that may be effecting my opinion a bit. But it is simmilar to someone who listens only to R&B saying that they hate Rock. MTV is nothing but a rotting collection of trash, they play some really awful crap on there. It is a great channel to watch on mute though because it is nothing but a bunch of softcore porn put forward in a pathetically lowball attempt to sell records. It's like getting a weak version of the playboy channel, except that I don't have to call cable and ask for the expansion package. What is even more sad is the number of losers who actually buy those worthless records. I grew up listening to a collection of hundreds, if not thousands of LP's that were in my basement. I didn't see any point in buying music, or stealing it if it was already there for free. I never really got into MTV or music videos ("music commercials" would probably be a much better term). Perhaps i could have expressed that opinion in a more subtle way, but i didn't, and I am not sorry at all. I don't find anything creative about a grown man crying in public, or cutting up his arms, or delibbrately making up nonsensical stories about his background to sell records because he has no talent and cannot make any money without doing those things in addition to making those stupid videos. I think it's very, very sad, and I think such "artists" are nothing but another piece of trash in the filthy, stinking dumpster that is our modern pop culture. And now that I have gotten mush deeper than I like to go and i'm feeling a little akward, i'll end the post there. I agree with you on the topic of MTV to an extent; they do play some terrible music on there. However, there are some very good Pop artists out there that are also very well-known and probably receive some airplay on MTV. There are good and bad artists in every genre, and similarly, there have been good and band artists in every decade. I just think it's a little narrow-minded to say that you don't enjoy music after '88 when you haven't really given it a chance. Oh well, your loss. -
Youngest sailor completes solo sail around the world

Wow, what a gun. But as for Jessica Watson, what kind of parents must she have? Seriously, who would let their 15-year-old daughter go sailing around the world by herself? -

(Points to sig) But in all seriousness, I'm not the biggest fan of the Piano as a solo instrument, with a few exceptions--namely Charles Ives' Piano Sonatas and Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. As I play the Violin, I spend a fair bit of time with Violin/Piano duets. I much prefer the Piano when it is played alongside a Violin.

Maybe it's just me then. I think I've listened to it twice and I really didn't enjoy it either time.. Might give it another go though. And I'm not sure. I like Aesop Rock but I don't remember recommending him to anyone. I really need to get into some more Hip-Hop. I want to listen to some good gangster stuff. Any recommendations?

Oh god, that is the best thing I have ever seen. I practically died of laughter in the first chorus.

Atmosphere is fantastic. I loved If Life Gives You Lemons, but the Lucy Ford collection is terrible. Sage Francis is pretty good as well, but I only like some of his stuff. And I haven't heard of Danger Doom actually.

Here. As of late there have been a few people making lists who weren't nominated. There's nothing wrong with making your own thread, but it takes attention away from the "official" threads.

You get bonus points for Anaal Nathrakh, Arkha Sva, and Mastodon. I really don't understand how you can put Dauði Baldrs in there.. Hliðskjálf is okay, but Dauði Baldrs is just.. ergh. Good list though. -
30 albums your mother would hate but you should own anyway..

Don't forget Shining. They hand out razor blades at their concerts and encourage the audience to kill themselves. :) -
I can understand not wanting to wait to get PM'd, but why would you make a list if you only like 12 albums?

I feel this is worthy of a mention, because in response to question 13, a few people have already displayed ignorance as to what Satanism is. Satanism is not necessarily worshipping Satan as an actual deity. More often than not, Satanists use "Satan" symbolically. It might be worth some peoples' time to have a quick read of the above links before answering question 13.

[hide=]Forum Username: Intriguing Age: 17 State (US only, do not give a city): N/A Nation (do not give a city): Australia Educational level: HSC (Completion of Grade 12) -if secondary or below, what level? -If at a university/college, what level and what is your major/minor course of study? 1. Have you ever attended a worship of any religion? Yes. -by choice? Yes. -What kind of worship? Non-Denominational Christianity. -Did you regularly attend this worship, by choice or parental guidance? By choice, but driven by a self-imposed sense of obligation. 2. Do you consider yourself religious? No. -Please explain in two or three sentences. I would call myself Agnostic, in that I do not feel that I have ound sufficient evidence to bring myself to believe in the existence of any deity. I would also call myself Atheistic, in that until I find such evidence, I choose not to believe in the existence of any deity. 3. Is there a god, gods, or a supreme deity? There could very well be, but if so, they have not manifested themselves to me in such a way as to make me believe in them. -Did said god, gods, or supreme being create the Universe, according to your belief? No. 4. Is there an afterlife? I don't know. 5. How do you believe that existence came about? (in a nutshell) Through Evolution. However, I have done no individual research in this area as of yet, so I'm not really in a position to answer. 6. Have you ever attended a worship of any religion that you do not consider yourself a part of? Yes. -What? Christianity after renouncing the religion. -Your thoughts on the experience: I found it to be overly organised and manufactured, in that the program reflected much more on weekly "rituals" than on "listening to the Holy Spirit". 7. What are your thoughts on non Judeo-Christian Western religions? Remember that religion is a broad term so please be specific. I haven't spent very much time looking at them. I find that most, if not all religions have aspects of truth and wisdom in them, but an equal amount of foolishness as well. I must reinforce, though, that I haven't spent much time looking at them. 8. What are your thoughts on Judeo-Christian religions? Remember that religion is a broad term and that both of these groups have many subdivisions that have radically different beliefs and practices. Same as above, with the exception that I have spent a fair amount of time looking at Christianity. 9. What are your thoughts on Asian religions? Remember that religion is a broad term so please be specific. I haven't spent enough time looking at them to form an educated opinion. 10. What are your thoughts on African religions? Remember that religion is a broad term, so please be specific. Same as above. 11. What are your thoughts on South American religions? Remember that religion is a broad term, so please be specific. Same as above. 12. What are your thoughts on Aboriginal religions (any native group that was displaced, such as Native Americans, Maori, Aborigines, etc)? Remember that religion is a broad term, so please be specific. Same as above. 13. What are your thoughts on pagan religions (Wiccan, alternative, Satanic, and other non-traditional forms of worship)? Remember that religion is a broad term, so please be specific. Also note that many alternative and pagan practices are not affiliated with Satanic worship. For the most part, same as above. However, I have found myself to agree with quite a few aspects of LaVeyan (non-theistic) Satanism. With that said, I find the rituals curious, and I doubt I would ever follow the religion. 14. What are your thoughts on atheism, the belief that there is no supreme being(s)? Please remember that there are degrees to this belief, and that not all share the same thoughts. I of course agree with it to an extent. However, I find some foolishness to the mind-set of most Atheists in completely rejecting even the posibility of a Supreme Being. 15. What are your thoughts on agnosticism, the belief that a supreme being(s) exists, but the individual chooses not to worship it/them? I view that particular branch of Agnosticism to be ignorant. However, I feel it relevant to mention that there are other branches of Agnosticism, and I find myself following one of those other branches. 16. Have you ever publicly chastised someone who believes in a religion/school of thought different than yours? No. -elaborate -what group were they? what group were you? 17. If you belong to a religion or non-religion, please identify. -Did you consciously choose to follow this belief? Yes. -Did you belong to another belief, by choice or force, before following this belief? Yes. -Did you personally research (as in personally in the first person) options before coming to this belief? Yes. 18. Is intelligence (not IQ, but actual intelligence) correlated to one's belief in a religion or non-religion? Keep in mind that intelligence can not be measured by any science, this is simply your judgment call. I don't think so. To be breif, there are a lot of stupid Christians and other theists, but there are also a lot of stupid Atheists. (I mentioned Christianity only because it is the most dominant religion where I live.) 19. Does religion, in your observation, do good in the world? Please cite specific groups or denominations. Yes. In a physical sense, there are numerous charities, safe-houses, and the like that have been formed by Catholic or Christian organisations. In a non-physical sense, it gives guidelines, meaningfulness, and hope to its followers. 20. Does non-religion, in your observation, do good in the world? Please cite specific groups or denominations. Yes, though perhaps not as much as religion does. I struggle to think of any charity organisations formed by Atheists. However, in a non-physical sense, it gives reason and a healthy questioning attitude. 21. Does religion, in your observation, do bad in the world? Please cite specific groups or denominations. Yes. Intense discrimination against homosexuals (from Islam and Christianity) and people of other races (Westboro Baptist Church, for an extreme example). Many wars have been started due to religion, both in the past and recently. Though it has without a doubt made contributions in the area, religion has also been a road-block for scientific progression, both in the past (Galileo?) and recently (Stem Cell Research). 22. Does non-religion, in your observation, do bad in the world? Please cite specific groups or denominations. Yes, though perhaps not as much as religion does. Neo-Nazis and other race-hate groups often have an Atheistic affiliation. 23. Please list your experience with sexual education, including but not limited to: lectures by parents, schools, religion, or non-education. Please do not list your sexual experiences. Parents, religion, and personal research (I'm not being seedy with that one). 24. Have you engaged in sexual intercourse of any kind? Please do not list your sexual experiences. A yes or no will suffice. Yes. 25. What, in your opinion, defines "love?" To care so deeply for someone that you would still jump in front of a bullet for them even after they had done something to make you stop "liking" them at the time. 26. Have you ever been in, or are now in, a relationship? Yes. -Is sex involved? Yes, though it is a small part of the relationship to be honest. 27. Are you single/committed relationship/married? Commited relationship. 28. What, in your opinion, is sex's place in a relationship (or lack of relationship)? It is special, and bonds people emotionally, or "spiritually" if you want to put it that way. Most people (myself included, regrettably) undervalue sex. 29. Have you ever partaken in an illicit substance (excluding alcohol or marijuana)? No. -if so, what? -Have you ever lost control of your actions while under the influence of an illicit substance? 30. Have you ever partaken in marijuana? No. -Do you habitually use this substance? -Have you ever been "stoned?" -Have you ever lost control of your actions while under the influence of marijuana? 31. Have you ever partaken in the consumption of alcohol? Yes. -Do you drink socially or alone? Or both? Both, though I prefer to drink in small groups, and I now refrain from drinking at large gatherings. -Have you ever been drunk? Yes. -Have you ever lost control of your actions while under the influence of alcohol? Regrettably, yes. For this reason, I now no longer drink at large gatherings. 32. Have you ever regretted a sexual encounter? To an extent. I have only had sex with one person, but I wish we had waited a bit longer. 33. Have you ever regretted using an illicit substance? (excluding hangovers) N/A. 34. Have you ever regretted using alcohol? (excluding hangovers) Yes, on one occasion. 35. Have you ever given serious thought (longer than 30 minutes in a year) to the existence of a supreme being(s)? Yes, I think about it and discuss it with others quite frequently.[/hide] Any chance you can expand the definition of Agnosticism somewhat?
