There's always luck involved, or chance, player skill only acts upon the chances or luck that is received to the player. We'd need an entirely new type of concept for a game genre if we wanted everything to be skill-based, without a hint of luck at all. Though I remember this type of debate getting to a 970ish thread before it got locked for capping the limits of the forum at that time. Anyways: It's still the same as other shooters. Learn how to use the guns, and you'll do alright, learn how to execute and operate them even more at the statistical level and you'll dominate or become pro. However in Quake you have to collect and find the guns before you can really do anything at all. It's entirely luck based whether you get to a weapon spawn before someone else, if someone isn't camping the spawn, or the spawn is active and not gone waiting on the timer. How the crap do you think that there's skill involved in an event like this can be determined by so many players? You may have an effect on gameplay, but it's nowhere near whats needed in order to affect anything that much. Then if you get lucky, or are clever enough to avoid the highest probability spawns of getting killed at (which then is still luck based/chance based), you'll have a gun now. Woot! Now all that's left is to spend 4 months learning to aim with these new guns based on timing that will eventually become memorized gameplay based on situations you've experienced hundreds of times. Where am I wrong in this? There's tons of luck & skill involved, but there's a crapload of luck. Map positioning and spawning is the most dominating factor, that ignores original player skill.

Ok, so I'm watching the video and I think of this: To 2 minutes: Intro. 2:40-2:55 - Nice hitboxes, lmfao. By 5:08 majority of kills have been from the dude either shooting and timing his shots at idiots, who are jumping way too high anyways, and hitting them on their way down, which isn't unique just something the game demands you to know how to do. Also realized why so many people think bunnyhopping is the crappiest thing to have ever been invented in games. Lol. - Hitboxes for single laser are incredibly not realistically true. My conclusion? Take out the bunnyhopping it would be like any other shooter. This 'original' feature creates different types of gameplay that are more difficult to become familiar with because you're utilizing at least three different skill assets in the process of aiming correctly (timing, prediction & logic). So yea, because of the jumping in the game, it makes all the difference, but just because it makes it more difficult to play doesn't mean it should be counted as something all on it's own.

So if 30 games are easy and just one is difficult, then how do you know that the single game doesn't have issues wrong with it compared to the normal 30 games, that are easy/medium/difficult? Shooters are never hard to the hang of after a month or so of playing. After that your general skill in the FPS genre is what keeps yourself going. As in once you get the UI, and feel of the game, it's just another way to increase your 'skill' at FPS's. And if this doesn't happen, then the game in question isn't a shooter or a proper one. It's the same for acquired tastes with food, if you want an analogy. Don't fool yourselves and others into thinking there's anymore to it than that.

Majority of games are based or derived from some form of literature, or book. We play these games because this fact is just so widespread and is such the norm that we're all doing it by playing the game or any other game. However the reverse doesn't happen often and like usual we either become skeptical, afraid, or condescending of change or of the 'new' thing that presents itself through whatever form. If more books are released through the years and other games start doing the same (which they do but not often) then it won't be seen as nerdy or stupid anymore, until it dies out of fashion. But I doubt it.

Oh crap, someones already posted one out of the two games that are the 'if darkfall fails, we go to these games'. Another game to get rolled over. Separating the Sci-Fi from the post-apocalyptic games is going to be the real challenge in this thread.

Looks like ActiveX or flash player plugins aren't working for the site or something along that lines. If you get the same results in Firefox, then post a topic in Tech Help with screenshots of both IE & FF and any other things you may think are important. May also want to list the browser versions and the plugins you have for each one. Or the servers are just too overthrown and dropping your connection in the middle of your requests. But I doubt this one.

Can't expect a perfect launch, almost every game that gets hyped has a craptastic first week, or in AoC's case, two months. =P & I use DoS for short, screw the D.

I'm getting kind of frustrated at this type of game, where it's race to the nearest weapon or be killed, and the ladder accounts for majority of the deaths. I agree it's fun to just try and kill or whatever but the frustration keeps mounting. It's like there's no skill but luck being represented in this game and all you need to do is either spawn at a gun spot, or camp a gun spot, or team up on individuals, which isn't a solution.

Not really harsh, more like pathetic. An estimated 7-10 years in development, and we get this game. Sure, 30 developers, and subjectively, amazingly fast, speedy, quality updates in beta, but they can't go just four more months to make the game the perfect game ever. There's two dupe bugs still available, at least 8 invisibility hacks (altering packets, but anyone can write a program and then everyone has them), 4 speed hacks (as in 50km's per hour), ability to fall through the ground & die with the use of siege hammers, able to be trapped in a building that gets built, and my favourite is the ability to change your skin colour by the type of spell you use in water in some lake in the southern area of the wild. That's disregarding the content that should be in the game and the content in the game that needs to be improved, this includes the spells, almost all the buildings and objects for sieging & clans, and the melee combat system. So many flaws. >.< They're being DoS'd right now. Just like when the pre-orders first came live, and when both beta invites were sent out, and on January 1st for the new year (as in payback for advertising the game would be released in 08), and like 6 other times pre-september. So yea, it was mostly expected.

Rofl. I love being in a game...and then it starts to fall apart horribly with teamkilling & 'fun' gameplay things. Shooting the gas pump or the witch in a hallway & running back to your team (with everyone in one spot) has never been so awesome. The hunter thing though is kinda funny. =P So is the glitch of teleporting like 10 metres in NM3 public or known? I ran into it last night and am wondering to make a vid on it cause I can't find any on YT or on sites about it. Found a video of it, like the only vid.

Knew you'd come around. I've never played any quake game before, so the 'different' type of combat is really making me feel embarrassed with 0:2 k/drs, lol. Guess I'll need to spend a month hammering down the variety of personal gaming skills for this. =P

Beta is over. Thus concludes myself and posting in this topic. If you buy the game, good luck & have fun. I'll see you in-game in four months, when the game should have been released. I recommend the four months because there's tons of bugs still not fixed and dozen of promised content not fully complete in-game.

Finally got in! Epicness, it's a lot of fun and is fast paced, but I'm sure I'm not the first to say this, but it's really whoever spawns closet to the guns usually dominates.
