  1. Shouldn't astronomers be aware of objects in close proximity to earth? (This is a real question, how much is known about close space?) If this scenario was real, what would (or could) you do about it? Nothing i guess, besides being scared -.- Well about the year 2012 and the ending of the Mayan calendar (as i already wrote on another thread): I read that on the precise time, when this calendar ends the earth sund and the center of the galaxy will make a conjunction, wich happens about every 20.000 years. This is either an astronomical fact or it isn't. It should verifiable anyway. The source was some magazine i read at the dentist, so i guess this is probably true, since it isn't terribly unbelievable anyway. Assuming it is true it would have astrological implications. It would be something like the beginning of a new year, or a new season in a larger scale. I have no clue what exact implications this would have. I'm going to assume that nothing fancy will happen at all, but we'll see anyway. From an astrologers point of view this seems like a big event, but in astrology nothing happens by "light switch principle". This conjuncnion would be the culmination of a process, like for example midsummer is the culmination of summer. Yet summer is a process and there doesn't happen anything special on midsummer. It's just the longest day in the year and from this point on the days get shorter. For a Cyclus lasting as long as this one (20.000 years), we shouldn't notice anything special at this date. We don't even notice anyting special at midsummer after all. We just notice something special at very short cycles like the day (sunrise, midday, sunset and such). I could of course argue from some different point of view that the year 2012 will bring something special, but if that should be the case, we would see anyway. Personally i do hope (of course) that something cool happens, but i won't be dissapointed if nothing happens at all. I wouldn't mind something cool happening at any time. I don't count on it and i am certainly not waiting for something to happen (well sometimes i'm waiting for a download to finish =P).
  2. I tried to explain in every of my posts.. It's maybe a bit tricky though. Did you never have anger without direction? Or felt useless, felt nobody understands you, felt neglected in some way, felt that you need something, but you just can't put your finger on what it is? Meh.. i started to write this post a couple of hours ago then i was interrupted. Anyway.. i don't think the motives are terrible hard to understand. Basically the same for people who commit suicide and for those incidents where you get into a mean dispute with a person, where you don't even know the reason for it afterwards.
  3. These incidents are just the tip of the iceberg. For every person who goes on a killing spree, there are idk how many people who feel equally miserable. Others just express it in different ways. I mean you have to feel miserable to do such things. I find it equally horrible that there are people out there, who kill themselves, because they feel so miserable and even that is just another tip of the iceberg. I mean - who is really happy? Many people just learn to "deal with it". This guy dealt with it that way. Would be nice if our lives would be at least as good, so that people don't kill themselves or others. Obviously they aren't. Things like that don't happen out of the blue. Our society is bad enough for incidents like that to occur. Another big red sign that reads "Change the way you are living!". I guess though, instead of loosening up, people will just get even more uptight about things with each of these occurances.
  4. How shocking -.- That's just what our society does. It produces a couple thousand lawyers a year, about the same amount of doctors, x plumbers, y teachers and a bunch of suicide killers. Hooray! Sad thing is that instead of making it better, with each massacre they make it tighter, so that they produce even more killers. In our glorious society, that has more than enough of everything, people are depressed (just be happy!), suffer from stress (get a job!), kill themselves (go cry emo kid!), kill each other (oh what a bastard!) and what not. Nobody to blame but ourselves.
  5. You're certainly entitled to your own opinion; Thank you =P Negoatiating, collaborating, compromise.. all these sound nice and dandy, but there is nothing to negotiate about "I want". I did neither military nor civil service (wich is compulsatory in Austria), not because i negotiated (how could that possibly have worked?), but because i just said "no". I went out when i was 13 not because i negotiated with my parents. I didn't give them a say in this. I didn't ask my parents for permission to drop out of school, i just did it. I believe that any party who wants to hold you back, or wants to force you to do something is just a projection of your own insecurities anyway. From my experience there is nothing that will hold you back, if you really want to. I don't particularly like compromises and i certainly don't like asking for permission.. Don't get me wrong. There are plenty of things i am willing to argue and i'm almost always willing to put myself into the shoes of other parties involved, but when i made up my mind about something it's my way or the highway. From what i underastand about martinisbacks situation, his parents seem to say no just because of fear and anxiety. If he just does as he pleases, he wouldn't restrict his parents freedom in any way. So i have to disagree with you, when you suggest negotiations. There is nothing to negotiate about. Imo he should listen more to what he wants, than to his parents. If he wasn't scared of dissapointing them, i believe they wouldn't even get too angry ultimately. They have power over him, because he cares about them. It's about time to turn that stick around. Negotiating, compromising - it's so counterintuitive.
  6. German (native) and my english is okay i guess. Naturally it comes easiest to me to read english. My writing is fairly okay and i can speak fairly fluently with little accent (I can speak italian with little accent to, or hungarian for that matter. I don't understand the words though.) I have troubles understanding some slangs though.
  7. I can believe that. Anytime. I like the last picture you posted best btw. What a load of crap. (Sorry IGoddessI)
  8. [hide] the most truth i've seen in this forum in a long time. the only part of this topic i haven't seen discussed yet is the part that bothers me the most. what do you plan on doing about relationships? unless you already have a guy who knows what you're doing and is ok with that, you're going to have a hell of a time finding a guy who wouldn't be totally disgusted with the thought that his girl used to be a guy. if that makes any sense. plus, you wouldnt be able to have kids? you may not care now but it's something you'll be thinking about when you're older, i promise. [/hide] How many people in the world know what they are doing? -.-
  9. Hm.. i guess those you are going to meet would have better chances than those you'll never meet and you'd just have to meet one of these anyway =P As for me i guess i believe in true love somehow. It's a very beautiful idea and as an idea it does definitely exist. Somehow a very, very early song (1983 or so) by my favourite band came to my mind when i thought about the topic: (Teenagerlove)
  10. I take a cup of cocoa, thank you.

    Instruments

It should be a matter of taste, rather then one of difficulty. Considering you like to sing, guitar seems to be the more obvious choice. I don't know about violins, but i definitely recommend NOT to buy a starter guitar. Invest ~300 bucks to get yourself something you likely won't outgrow for a very long time. Btw.. do we talk accoustic or e-guitar here? Also i believe that it doesn't really matter on what material you start, unless you were to play on a concert guitar or something like that. Just try to find an instrument that speaks to you and is affordable. For guitars the strings are very important when it comes to how difficult it is to play. They can (and have to be) changed anyway after a while. So just ask in the store for a decent instrument and starter strings. ...and in case you are going to learn guitar and would be using a pick, use a fairly hard one, one that doesn't bend easily (1mm or thicker).
  12. That might be the deepest thing I;ve ever seen in one of Bubsa's posts. Agreed
  13. I agree. In my opinion the educational value of the medium movie is way to little appreciated. Although i did enjoy the books i had to read for school, it was always about books and never about movies. There is a wealth of amazing movies out there that are equally nourishing to the mind as good books are.
  14. That story about Blizzard and the dieing kid is a bad example. That just showed that they cared enough to fulfill the wish of a dieing kid. I'm sure there are people out there, who would do that just to for the good publicity, but i guess most people would do that because it's hard to deny a last wish (even if it wasn't public at all). Companies should probably care more for their product then for their customers.
  15. On the contrary. I tend to notice those who search for an absolute, analytic truth to what happened usually end up disappointed. As you go on with that scientific approach, you only find that the more questions you answer, the more questions arise from those answers. A never ending cycle. Mh.. that isn't because what i said about books. It's just that there isn't and can't be an absolute analytical truth. As far as i know that is a fact. You either end up in an infinite regress (ever answer raises new questions), use circular reasoning (You just prove what you already said in your premisse. For example: Sokrates is a greek, all greeks are human, therefor Sokrates is human. Whuppidido! Enlightening o.0) or end your question with a dogmatic answer (Ah [bleep] it! God created everything =P). That's what i learned in the first year of philosophy on university. If you want to go deeper into the subject, i suggest Kant (a bit hard to read though). That took a while to sink in, then i decided to quit university and since there is no absolute truth anyway, i'll just make my own truth. Works for me. Complex thoughts don't have to be about an "absolute analytical truth" though. So what you said doesn't devalue books.
  16. Well... Cat toilet, cat toilet... Common Peter - yes that makes the cat happy Cat toilet, cat toilet.. now it's better - yes that makes the cat happy blah, blah, blub.. and so on. i don't feel like translating this piece of crap
  17. The first time i heard that new album. It's better then Meteora imo. The latter sounded a bit like a rip off of Hybrid Theory. I kinda like them, they might be posers a bit, but their music goes into my ear and their lyrics (not all of them of course) mean something to me. No bomb like "Crawling" on their new album though.
  18. Hm.. you say fiction. For non-fiction can be said that you can express complex thoughts in a very detailed way trough books. I doubt there is another medium to do this in a similar way. As for fiction. idk.
  19. I'd really like to see a guaranteed minimum income. So you get money (somewhere between 700 and 1000 euros a month) no matter what you do with your time. It's not that my country couldn't afford it. There are just political reasons why we don't have that. I even believe it could be cheaper then the whole bureaucracy currently involved in our wellfare system. Also the more money people spend the more money flows back into the state due to sales tax. The whole idea might cause some controversy and problems, but i'm pretty sure it would pay in the long run. Now how would i managed to get elected with that kind of program?
  20. Don't forget gore. You can never have enough gore :P It's a bit short on character development though =P I did... believe me... took me a lot of guts to get through that part and tranquilizers to calm me afterwards. So much for any dreams of Australia...
  21. I agree wholeheartly. Global warming is just one aspect. There are reasons in abundance to change our lifestyle. Take cars for example. They are very noisy and their fumes stink. Whether they cause global warming or not, they affect my living quality. Traffic is just a very random example though. Very much traffic is caused by the daily pilgrimage to work and home again. Well.. just one very random example. However nobody really seems to care about changing this.
  22. Thank you. Yah, it was probably more scared then me, if you can even speak of fear for such a primitve animal. It's terribly silly to be scared of them imo. That's what the thread somehow is all about. I am scared of them and imagining a spider crawling up my sleave, well more like hushing up my sleave - they are swift bastards after all - is terrifying. (I still ave to look away when i see a spider in a movie or something. In natura it's worse, but i can at least prepare myself after the initial shock.)In truth it of course acted exactly like you described: It went in the exact opposite direction from where i touched it with the stick. Chasing it around with the stick was an incredible good thing to do. It was funny, how the spider hushed around the floor "fearing" for its life, while i was scared of getting close. It really was a triumph for me. Not actually catching it, but facing it, instead of just sucking it into the vacuum cleaner. They are just cute little creatures. Arachnophobia probably (i'm no expert) is just a projection of your fears on them. The spider just does it's thing, it doesn't make a conscious effort to scare me. I however project my own consciousness on it and assume it would make a sneak attack on me or something. At least i slowly project my fear on it, in the way that i assume it is scared of me, wich it most likely isn't capable of. Eventually i'll hopefully realize that it is just a itsy bitsy spider =P EDIT: The spider probably doesn't even perceive me as animal. It was "scared" of random dangerous motions, like it would try to evade falling rocks, if given the chance.
  23. ups.. tried to edit a typo and now i made a post... mh.. uh... hm.. well.. Never thought this thread could be that controversial. and.. uh.. Yah: Glad that it appeals to you, but: (quoted from this: http://forum.tip.it/viewtopic.php?t=712642&start=20 topic) Maybe it's not quiet as drastic, but no thread (i know) on this forum lived terrible long. (Don't want to break the enthusiasm though =P) Then again: the thread claims to be epic after all.
  24. I always thought they were insects  Insects are animals to, spiders however aren't insects. Both spiders and insects are arthropods. animals -vertebrate ---reptiles ---amphibia ---mammals ---birds -invertebrata ---arthropods ------spiderlike ----------scorpios ----------spiders ----------idk what else ------insects ------centipedes ------one group is missing i believe ---snails&mussels =P (hope that is correct)
