    Today...

Not relevant to my life today but I'm noticing a depressing trend in topics in OT: "The End of the World. What would you do?" "What are your reasons of living?" "People Who Secretly Have No Life" "Worst way to die" What, is it time to make a sticky about death? It's the holidays, don't be so melancholy.
  2. certain people on these forums say things which don't even merit argument. there's really no point in arguing with them or proving your point because they don't even appeal to logic; all they do is throw names at you. these kinds of people are few and far between, thankfully, as they provide barely anything productive to the board. for a post or thought which one actually respects, i agree with you. Then ignore (or report, if you think it's necessary) them. By insulting them back you're letting them bring you down closer to their level.
  3. I'm not sure, I haven't been as involved in the runescape community the past few years. I was just making a larger point that if it's true every few months the community further declines, we would not be where we're at now since TIF has been around for several years. Heated argument and debate aren't flaming in my book. But that's another issue. We have these discussions using key words like "flaming" and "trolling" but we have completely different definitions for them (side note, most people completely misunderstand what trolling actually is). But to the point, intense argument is completely acceptable and should be encouraged. If you have reason to believe someone is completely wrong about something, go ahead and refute them using your evidence/experience. What puzzles me is why you even consider throwing names at people. The second I see a person name-calling, everything they just said is discredited in my eyes. You can't debate/argue while attacking the person you're debating with. It removes your own objectivity from the topic you're debating.
  4. Agreed. However, just because someone disagrees with another person doesn't mean they are flaming them. They can disagree completely and think the other person's point is completely off base, even completely discrediting their point of view, and that is fine. It becomes flaming when you bring the person into the argument. For a lot of posters here, just debating/arguing is not enough. They need to make their counterpoint, and then add a personal insult. Even if it's something small, like adding "children" and a sarcastic smiley at the end of a sentence, it's unnecessary and ultimately incites more personal attacks. Thankfully it's not too much of a problem here (but of course at the rate the people describe the community is declining, one would have to extrapolate a few years down the line this place will be worse than 4chan /s).
  5. If we rally for anything, I say we have a rally to bring back Oergg to TIF. :P
  6. It's not always as black as white as you're describing. I think you're right to an extent: by calling people out on points they make that are completely abrasive you expose them for being bad for the community. But for the most part, rather than taking matters into your own hands, because you're far from objective over whether or not a person should stay within a community, you might want to leave that to the staff. That's their job to remove members like that because they can discuss the matter in full amongst themselves, not a group of posters who decide to take matters in their own hands. Because half the time it's just a troll who is baiting you for a reaction to make a thread generally go downhill and you can't fight against that.
  7. No, one person did. Das was talking about how people should show respect to each other without resorting to elitism. Not once did he mentioned efficiency. Can you quot bladewing's post again, and then BOLD the part where he said Das? Who cares who he named or didn't name. but to me he didn't name anyone... That was my point...Thanks for your understanding. Oh boy
  8. No, one person did. Das was talking about how people should show respect to each other without resorting to elitism. Not once did he mentioned efficiency. Can you quot bladewing's post again, and then BOLD the part where he said Das? You misunderstood. GW said one person, rather than tip.it as a whole, twisted the topic (which wasn't really the case to begin with, it went on a four or five post tangent. Who really cares?) He just mentioned Das to point out that on the whole we were still on topic. But off topic, I'm beginning to think that this obsession with staying on-topic is becoming an old relic of our community. It's always been stressed in the rules, but I don't see there being anything wrong with side conversation. Forcing conversation to go one way or another isn't really organic for a forum as long as it's kept respectful/intelligent. It will always come back to the original topic at hand just by how threads are structured.
  9. Yes. Then in effect you talk all day to say nothing. You will never win people to your side by hostile posts or posts written as to make people feel you think you're better than them - it's an endless cycle of contempt that will breed as bitterness only grows as an effect of elitist views being shoved down your throat. No one is better than anyone - we all share the same common bound of humanity. I would have been a bit more respectful (EDIT: I originally typed 'respective,' lol?), but I already know that their responses will be something akin to "[bleep] off efficiency clown lololol," so I'd rather lecture them and belittle them in one go rather than lecture them then belittle them after they've responded stupidly. By doing that you're only reinforcing what you hate most. You're creating conflict when it had not existed previously. Nobody is asking for you to critique them. You think you have to lecture people? Belittle them? The fact that you assume they will have a stupid response only makes your case worse. I'd straight up consider changing your posting style because you're just setting yourself up for frustration. The fact that I'm even responding in such a manner is really making me feel like you're just trying to troll right now.
  10. Well said, Das. Hey Armagedon, long time no see. I think I made a pixel avatar for you way back when. But I have to disagree fundamentally with you on that opinion. You've been gone for several years. In that time you've probably matured a lot. It's not that forum members have become less mature. It's that you perceive what people say completely differently. If you graduated from highschool, and several years later came back to the lunchroom and tried having conversation, would you expect things to feel the same? When I look back on my older posts, I had a completely different posting style. I responded to people differently and probably read what they posted differently. For whatever reason, people on this forum are almost universally unable to grasp the concept that they, not the forums, changed over a period of several years. Which just leads me to believe nobody has an even remotely close to objective point of view about this community. Why they think they have the authority to make the massive claim that an entire community and forum culture has changed is just beyond me.
  11. The only constant about this community is that it's members always complain that it's going downhill. In actuality, being here (not including SB) since 2004, I can say that I've seen very little change over the years. The only thing that changes drastically are users' individual perspectives on the community over time when they start getting bitter/cynical about things for whatever reason.
  12. I would wear the white low tops, those shorts, and a black, grey, or white shirt. With those shorts you want everything else toned down.
  13. Shopstyle.com 6pm.com Jackthreads.com Giltman.com The last two are invite only. Let me know if you need one. I also get some stuff from sites that have physical locations near me. That way if stuff doesn't fit I just return it to the store.
  14. I like the look, but few people can actually pull it off nowadays.
  15. I haven't followed the market in a good four-five years. I've got a green, white, purple, and blue party hat. What's this mean for my net worth? And can I even sell those for cash or would I only get junk?
  16. It is completely ignorant to claim that the world we live in now would be better without contributions from Americans. Since America's founding until now Americans have contributed so much to the world. It is ridiculous to claim that all these inventions would have been discovered anyways. Part of the reason why America catalyzed discovery and invention is due to American culture. We reward risk-taking and innovative thought. All throughout history most other civilizations suppressed this type of behavior. Would-be Americans left Europe because they wanted this type of freedom. One of America's basic foundations is based of of this type of culture. That being said, the other argument I am seeing is that the world would still be better because Americans are stupid and obese. This may be marginally true relative to the rest of the population, but it is only the result of the vast contributions to the world Americans have already made. Historically America has done so much for the world. Not only have Americans invented so many things that have benefited mankind, but we're usually the first country to lend aid to other countries hit by devastation. And yet when New Orleans is hit by disaster after disaster, where is the rest of the world coming to aid? You can expect some Americans to kick back and enjoy what their ancestors have laid out before them. If you won the lottery, wouldn't you expect to get a little lazy? It's unfortunate that some Americans have become this way, but it is to be expected when everything is handed to you. Currently in America this is changing to an extent. As Americans are hit by the recession, many of us have changed our lifestyle and have adapted to a more European outlook. I would expect to see a more reserved culture emerge in the next few decades due to globalization. Regardless of how American culture is now, there is no denying that the world would not have many of the things we all take for granted now.

    School

Summers almost gone. Back to school again. :( It'll be a fun first month at the University of Michigan, but I'm coming up on my senior year and the class load is just getting cumbersome. I don't want it to end because I have so many friends up in Ann Arbor, but at the same time applying to med schools right now I'm getting kind of ready to move on. Two more semesters until I get my B.S. in Neuroscience and hopefully I get accepted into a med school soon. I'm still working on applications but have one interview scheduled so far at LECOM.

    Your first kiss.

My first kiss went a little like this. It was New Years and some friends started a game of spin the bottle. A few years went by until I would actually legitimately kiss girls when I got to college.

    Jobs

Jeeze. Making your way in the world today takes everything you've got.
  20. Nerds Jocks Preppies Greasers Hopkins I was about to say we need a greasers revival, then it hit me. Guidos are basically orange greasers who traded in flashy leather jackets for flashy Ed Hardy shirts!
  21. Athletic shorts, white new balance shoes, and yanked up crew socks? :P
  22. Prepster. Probably due to growing up in the suburbs and now living in Ann Arbor for four years. When I'm going out my friends either say I look really preppy or hipster, and I'll often blend the looks wearing skinny selvage jeans with converse/tretorns and a lacoste/j crew polo or button down. But people who know me really well will always call out my inner nerd.
  23. When Jagex staff were damage controlling, their argument against a rollback was that after the dupe there were still less party hats than in circulation after they were initially dropped. So given this long amount of time since then, the dupe may be somewhat less significant than what we give it credit for.
  24. I haven't felt that excited about drops since drop parties. My first drop party I followed a person spamming "drop party." Not knowing what it was as a new player but wanting to be part of a party, I was led with a group of people into the wilderness. I figured we all would wait to drop in on a person, kill him/her, and the party would be collecting the items. But no, we were all lead to the wildy and subsequently slaughtered. My first actual drop party I learned the popular phrase "dam telegrabbers!!!" My favorite drop party I attended was hosted by runevillage on rs1 and was so huge it managed to crash the server. I had a few fun drop parties I helped with as the TET treasurer, but nothing compared to rs1 drop parties. Sometimes I wonder how it's possible to get so off topic. Anyways, my point is drop parties were pretty exciting back then. But now since you can't really drop items we have colorful balloons and dancers to make up for that, I suppose.
