The trouble with Democracy...
Democracy is flawed, but it the best system we currently have, I see no realistic alternative without downsides much worse than ignorance.

The Queen - useful or useless?
I like the Queen, she provides enough entertainment and such that I think the cost of keeping her about is small enough to be put up with (although of course, even if the Government cut off her allowance, its not like she doesn't have enough money of her own to keep herself going). Also, the reorganisation of the English constitution and legal system when you remove the crown would be a nightmare (and probably cost a ton).

North Korea launches a rocket
Except China siding with North Korea would never happen unless they did nothing first, and other countries just started bombing the [cabbage] out of them. If North Korea ever fires a missile and it hits any other country China at the very worst would just stay out of it. More than likely they would be against North Korea. Exactly, there is no reason for China to stick its neck out and start a war (especially on the size being talked about here) in defence of NK - to be honest, if the US suddenly did invade NK without provocation I can't see China starting WWIII because of its links, its just not worth it for them - why risk your world position for one terrible little country you have vague links with? Because you have a secret plan for world domination, and that's exactly the excuse you were looking for to launch it. If you have a secret plan for world domination, why do you need an excuse to launch it? Also, good point Reb, noone is going to put their necks on the line for NK, no-one.

If a civillian showed up while your house was burning and saved you, would you ask them "Who made you fireman?" I, for one, was unaware that the world was on fire.

Out of interest, what do you mean by natural rights? I thought all natural lawyers died out somewhere around 1700? Are you referring to Natural Law? I just meant the rights we are all born with as equal human beings really, not any of the so-called "rights" that have bestowed on us Brits by the EU or anything. This is what I want you to define, that sounds dangerously like natural law to me. Provided you realise that these rights are nothing more than social constructs then we have not problem. Believing in natural rights that are intrinsic from birth and exist supra-law is, on the other hand, problematic to the point of being incorrect. [/hide] Isn't pretty much everything a social construct? :) If you're looking for a definition: Common Law Rights. Depends entirely on your view of law if I'm honest, there are still a few natural lawyers about (although few in the west, and most loony theologians). You must be careful to not mislabel common law rights as natural rights - they are two very different things; if one were to ascribe to natural law, you could justify a "government must not interfere" stance, but with the common law as it is, the Government is right to intervene with statute when it finds the common law to be lacking or incorrect. Thanks, I'm aware of the distinctions I was just in the flow and terms I use on a daily basis with friends etc tend to slip in. :) It's a matter of opinion whether Government is right to intervene in matters of common law. Well.. I suppose I can think of instances where it would be/has been necessary to do so but HOW it intervenes is the issue for me really. I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask you to justify that opinion - the judiciary's role has always been one of enforcement of legislative/executive intent (explicitly through statute, or tacitly through common law). The common law is still the law of the Government, but rather than being made explicitly through their words it is made by the courts with the implicit approval of the Houses. It seems to me there are no occasions when it is right to prevent the democractically elected power from overruling the unelected judge - to do so would make our judges into princes and kings. Of course, making the argument the Government is interfering on an incorrect basis is perfectly valid -that is a moral or social question, but the Government overruling the Judiciary is certainly not an illegal, or unjust thing - that is a settled question of law. PS - this will be my last post of the night, but will check back tomorrow.

Filefront closes operations on March 30
I hope to hell its an April Fool's joke, but if not, then I'll join the rest of the internet in mourning one of the better (if not the best, its certainly my most used) download sites.

useless laws.
@ the last three posts Doctrine of implied repeal and the Human Rights Act puts an end to that lovely myth I'm afraid (and unfortunately most of the stuff in this thread, at least, I hope the US has a similar doctrine :? )

The official World of Warcraft thread.
I agree, back when I levelled my lock it was done via affliction (and was pretty fast as far as I was concerned), this was pre WOTLK, but I can't imagine its changed massively.

The official World of Warcraft thread.
Jaziek, uni holiday has begun for me, and being bored of my characters I am looking to roll a new one - don't suppose your guild would be open to throwing an invite my way if I roll a new character? For the guild chat more than anything - WoW gets awful boring if its silent...

Emo kids.
I have no idea of how to define them without resorting to vagueness. But if we could pit the groups of them that lurk the town centres against the roaming hoardes of chavs then we may have stumbled upon a glorious modern day gladiator/coliseum kind of thing...

[TF2] It's MANN Vs. Machine!
Thats happened to me for ages (if I understand it right) and it just comes from server owners faking their playercount to get more people on (works if they advertise 20 and have say 16, but doesn't if they have 0). Its bloody annoying >.<

College. Jagerbombs, parties, all that.
Go for the better university if you can. When I was applying I got to apply to 6 uni's, pick two that accepted me, and then decide which to go to after results. I was accepted into 5/6 and chose to keep Oxford (which required the super high grades etc) and Exeter (not so much) as a safety net. While I was waiting for results I wondered if I should pick the easier option, but decided to go for Oxford if I got the grades (which I did). I am now...nearly 2 years into my Law degree and haven't looked back, the workload is massively higher than anywhere in England (and probably the US as well) except Cambridge (which we equal, if not better :P). The benefits are amazing, access to the best tutors and resources, just as many parties/uni student type things as anywhere else, I heartily recommend going for the best uni you can. Also, a degree from a "better" university will grant you better prospects, even at undergrad level, fellow law students from other uni's in the UK are struggling for work experience/pupillage whilst oxbridge students tend to walk into the firm of their choice. Also, be sure to check about any funding help they can give you, Oxford gives me a substantial amount as I cannot currently fund myself, the good universities will never want to see you drop out because of money.
