Well, we turned out alright, amassed great wealth, and are now more or less the core of the RuneScape economy...are you saying that perhaps if we were given our crummy items back when we died we would've turned out better maybe? Not really, we probably would've turned out worse, thinking that whenever we happened to have the misfortune of dieing, we could just talk to some fancily-dressed NPC for our gear back...
