March 15, 200719 yr Google's behind YouTube. YouTube isn't going anywhere. :: Guess the Movie Contest Champion: pfilc23 ::
March 15, 200719 yr Hmmm, could go either way, really. However, Viacom are most likely going to get it. Every TV channel that airs its TV shows has a binding contract with Viacom, and pays a set amount dependant on the number of plays per show. Now, with the amount of people who log on to YouTube, you could assume that each of the shows in question is viewed a minimum of 50 times a day since inception. Viacom are not being paid anything in royalites or agreed fees for their intellectual property, and with the amount of videos being shown, I reckon they could easily justify the $1.52 billion they're demanding. Saying that it's impossible to stop copyright infringement due to file sharing is pure rubbish; Napster, Morpheus, WinMX... need I go on? A website booms in traffic, it becomes a target for the money grabbing Big Corporates. The crux of Viacom's arguement will be this; by allowing ANY video to be uploaded, they've opened the doors to major copyright infringement. Since day 1, they should have put checks and vets in place to make sure that copyrighted intellectual property is not displayed without permission. I know people are saying "You can't expect them to trawl through thousands of videos", but the truth is Yes, they can, and Yes, they should. As to YouTube being the end? Sincerely doubtful. it's not exactly Chicken Feed, but the amount Google is making via advertising is far offsetting it. Expect some tighter security measures or user fees in the near future...

A website booms in traffic, it becomes a target for the money grabbing Big Corporates. Please explain how they're going to shut down networks they don't even know exist? I know people are saying "You can't expect them to trawl through thousands of videos", but the truth is Yes, they can, and Yes, they should. At what cost - they'd need thousands of additional staff to do that; and even then it wouldn't be effective enough. The number of hits that such websites get per day far outweighs the number of staff they'd need to do the same job (find content that breaks their TOS).
March 15, 200719 yr i hope google owns their [wagon] Americans love to fight. All real Americans love the sting of battle. George S. Patton
March 15, 200719 yr Saying that it's impossible to stop copyright infringement due to file sharing is pure rubbish; Napster, Morpheus, WinMX... need I go on? BitTorrent, Newsgroups, IRC, eMule, LimeWire, WASTE, Freenet, SoulSeek, DC++... need I go on? Newsgroups have been around far longer than any of the other services and have been used for piracy for far longer, yet they're still going. BitTorrent has been estimated to account for 35% of the traffic on the intarweb yet it is still going strong, only a couple of sites have been closed down - the rest shut down simply due to fear of being sued - not because of rulings. What's more it looks like it will be even harder to tackle with the advent of DHT trackers. It is impossible to stop copy infringement via filesharing.
March 16, 200719 yr I hate to be cynical, but has anyone noticed that they wee fine with youtube showing copyrighted films until an organisation that was large enough to sue took over Back by popular demand! And I guess I just wanted to tell you, as the light starts to fade, that you aree the reason, that I am not afraid, and I guess I just wanted to mention, as the heavens will fall, that we will be together soon if we will be anything at all.

March 19, 200719 yr Great. A GOOD website comes around where I can enjoy myself, and then some overly bored lifeless company owner wants to sue. Byebye, my fun and entertainment! I loved you before the Executives got ahold of you!! theres like 100 more video hosting sites http://www.dailymotion.com http://www.bolt.com video.google.co.uk (although they own youtube so it might end up in the same lawsuit) uh.. all the others i use are predominantly for TV episodes.
