soulegleon
Soulegleons Pest Control Guide Table of Contents I. Intro II. Gear III. Starting Out IV. Rewards V. Extras VI. Credits I. Intro What is Pest Control? Pest Control (abbreviated PC) is one of the many mini-games that exist in Runescape. This particular mini-game, you will find, offers not only the best combat experience compared to any other mini-game, but the best combat experience even compared to training. In Pest Control your objective is protecting a Void Knight while slaying off monsters from another realm that have come through mystical portals. In reality your main objective is to destroy these portals and protect the Void Knight from harm. You and your team have an objective: kill the 4 portals (there are 4 colors and 4 locations: Blue [east], Yellow [south-east], Red [south-west], and Purple [west]), but its easier said than done. Each portal has a shield that guards it, slowly the Void Knight will break the shields down and you will be able to attack them. Once all 4 portals have been destroyed you will get a reward. If you fail to defend the Void Knight in the middle of the outpost, and he dies, you will lose the game and get no reward. Why should I do Pest Control? Pest Control is the fastest combat experience in the game for players with 100+ combat; it is also the best combat experience for most other players. That alone should be enough information to convince you, but I will tell you more about why you might want to play Pest Control. A reward you may obtain from Pest Control (by using your points to buy it) is Void Knight Armor or Experience in any combat skill besides Summoning. This armor will give you a special bonus for a corresponding helmet that you wear with the suit (total suit is: Void Knight Top, Void Knight Bottom, Void Knight Gloves, and Void Knight Melee/Magic/Ranged Helm) if you have a full set with the corresponding helmet you will get these bonuses: 10% Attack and Damage Bonus for Melee Armor, 10% Range Accuracy and Damage for Ranger, and 30% Magic Accuracy for Mages. The Experience you can get depends on your stat levels, the formula is rather complicated, but I will tell you it in the Rewards section. Later on I will tell you more about the rewards of this mini-game. General Information As I said before if you win you will get a reward. That reward is Pest Control Points; you will get 2, 3, or 4 and you will also get 10 coins times your combat level. You may be wondering why there are 3 different point rewards; this is because there are 3 different boats. The first boat is Novice Boat, this is for players with 40+ combat and will give you 2 Points if you win. The Novice boat is the most southern boat. The next boat is the Intermediates Boat, this is for players with 70+ combat and will give you 3 Points if you win. The Intermediate boat is the middle boat. The last boat is the Veterans Boat, this is for players with 100+ combat and will give you 4 Points if you win. When you board one of these boats you will have to wait for at least 5 other players. Once you have 5 players the game will start in 5 minutes, or if 25 players join you will start instantly. II. Gear Here I will list the best gear possible for this Mini-Game. A. Melee Gear Table: Helm: Fighter Hat/Helm of Neitiznot>Warrior Helm/Berserker Helm>Other Amulet: Amulet of Fury>Amulet of Glory>Amulet of Power>Amulet of Strength>Other Body: Bandos Chestplate>Fighter Torso>Proselyte Hauberk>Initiate Hauberk>Monk Top Legs: Bandos Tassets>Proselyte Cuisse>Initiate Cuisse>Monk Robe Bottom Weapon: Abyssal Whip/Saradomin Sword/Godsword>Other Shield: Rune Defender>Dragonfire Shield/Adamant Defender>Toktz-ket-xil>Unholy Book>Book of Balance>Other Boots: Dragon Boots>Rune Boots>Climbing Boots>Other Gloves: Barrows Gloves>Other RFD gloves>Clanks/Family Crest Gauntlets>Other Ring: Warrior Ring/Berserker Ring>Other Cape: Fire Cape>Achievement Cape (t)>Achievement Cape>Obsidian Cape>Other Capes NOTE: Full Void Melee is the best, but you have to have the FULL suit (Void Knight Body, Void Knight Bottom, Void Knight Gloves, and Void Melee Helm) Abyssal Whip: Attack: Strength: Godsword: Attack: Strength: Dharoks: Tips and Tricks: The Advised Suit for Melee is the Abyssal Whip Suits, Strength or Attack, it doesnt really matter. I Advise you use cheap potions that boost up stats, Zamorak Brews are great, even though they damage you and lower your Defence it gives you a better attack bonus than Super Attack Potions and gives the same Strength bonus as a Strength Potion, Zamorak Brews cost about 100-300 each. If you dont want to have the lowered Defence you can bring along normal Restore Potions, which cost about 30-70 each. (Not Suggested) If you wish you can use a Dragon Battle Axe special, it lowers everything but Strength but gives a strength bonus that is the same as Super Strength Potions. You may also use a Restore Potion to gain your levels back. If using Dharoks use nitroglycerin potions (obtained from Digsite, you can go to the Digsite quest guide to find out how, it deals 25 damage so you can bring along cakes to get you to the correct health, the actual item name is Unidentified Liquid), you can also use a hot rock but Jagex nerfed them and they dont work as well anymore. Range Gear Table: Helm: Armadyl Helmet>Third Age Coif>Robin Hood Hat>Archer Helm>Other Amulet: Amulet of Fury>Amulet of Glory>Amulet of Power>Other Body: Armadyl Chestplate>Third Age Range Top>Karils Body/Black Dragonhide Body>Other Legs: Aymadyl Legs>Third Age Range Legs>Karils Skirt/Black Dragonhide Legs>Other Weapon: Weapon Varies Shield: If a one handed range weapon: Unholy Book>Book of Balance>Dragonfire Shield>Other Boots: Ranger Boots>Snake Skin Boots>Frog Boots>Other Gloves: Barrows Gloves>Third Age Vambraces>Black Dragonhide Vambraces>Other Ring: Archers Ring>Other Cape: Avas Accumulator>Avas Attractor>Fire Cape>Other NOTE: Full Void Range is the best, but you have to have the FULL suit (Void Knight Body, Void Knight Bottom, Void Knight Gloves, and Void Range Helm) Magic Shortbow: Dark Bow: Toktz-Xil-Ul Rune Throwing Knife: Rune Crossbow: Red Chinchompas: Crystal Bow: Tips and Tricks: When using Avas Accumulator/Attractor stand at the South-West side of the portal so you will get your ammunition back. If you have a longer range weapon (Crystal Bow, Dark Bow, Magic Shortbow) you can stand in the towers and still attack portals, the downside is if a Brawler walks in your path you can no longer attack the portal. (Note: you cannot attack any portals from the south-west tower). If you are above 80 Range, Void Knight Range is the best gear available (I suggest you use a crossbow, crystal bow, or a dark bow with it). If you are attacking a portal, attack the Purple Portal as it is weak to Range Attacks. Pay attention to your Fuse Length when using Chinchompas. Magic Gear Table: Helm: Third Age Magic Hat>Ahrims Hood/Seers Helm>Infinity Hat>Other Amulet: Third Age Amulet>Amulet of Fury>Amulet of Glory>Amulet of Magic>Other Body: Ahrims Robe Top>Third Age Mage Robe Top>Infinity Robe Top>Mystic/Enchanted Top >Other Legs: Ahrims Robe Skirt>Third Age Mage Robe Bottom>Infinity Robe Skirt>Mystic/Enchanted Robe Skirt>Other Weapon: Master Wand>Ancient Staff/Teachers Wand>Void Knight Staff (if you are casting Claw of Guthix)>Other Shield: Mages Book>Unholy Book>Book of Balance>Other Boots: Infinity Boots>Wizard Boots>Mystic Boots>Otheri Gloves: Barrows Gloves>Infinity Gloves>Other Ring: Seers Ring>Beacon Ring/Lunar Ring>Other Cape: Zamorak/Saradomin/Guthix Cape>Ghostly Cloak>Fire Cape>Other Slayer Dart (1 Death, 4 Mind): Claw of Guthix (2 Blood, 1 Fire, 4 Air): (Recommended you use Charge: 3 Blood, 3 Fire, 3 Air) Blasts (1 Death, 3 Air, 4 Earth/3 Water/5 Fire) and Waves (1 Blood, 5 Air, 7 Earth/Water/Fire): Bolts (1 Chaos, 2 Air [3 for Fire], 2 Water/3 Earth/4 Fire) Ancient Magicks [burst][barrage]: (Ice Spells highly recommended) Tips and Tricks: You can use spells like Vulnerability to lower Portals defence. When using Ancient Magicks you can use a multi target: Smoke spells to poison many enemies at once, Shadow spells to prevent you and your teammates from taking more damage, Blood spells to heal yourself when low on Hitpoints, and Ice Spells to freeze your enemies from following you and your teammates. When on Ancient Magicks, use multi target spells to help kill Spinners that are surrounded by Brawlers. Melee Pures Gear Table: [(P)=Prayer Pure] Helm: Bear Helmet (P)>Slayer Mask>Iron Full Helm/Robin Hood Hat>Other Amulet: Amulet of Fury>Amulet of Glory>Other Body: Iron Platebody/Monk Robes (P)>Other Legs: Black Dragonhide Chaps>Other Weapon: Abyssal Whip/Armadyl Godsword/Saradomin Sword/Dragon Scimitar>Other Shield: Unholy Book>Book of Balance>Iron Kiteshield>Other Boots: Climbing Boots>Other Gloves: Combat Bracelet>Black Dragonhide Vambraces>Other Ring: Berserker/Warrior Ring>Other Cape: Fire Cape (P)>Achievement Cape (t)>Achievement Cape>Other Abyssal Whip: Attack: Strength: Godsword: Attack: Strength: Obsidian Maul: Abyssal Whip (P): Attack: Strength: Godsword (P): Attack: Strength: 1 Attack: 1 Prayer Pure: Prayer Pure: Tips and Tricks: The Advised Suit for Melee is the Abyssal Whip Suits, Strength or Attack, it doesnt really matter. Starting Out First you need to start out by getting to Pest Control, here is a map on how to get there: Yellow Path: From Falador Teleport spot. Green Path: From the Rimmington Hot Air Balloon. Pink Path: From Draynor Glory Teleport spot. Dark Red Path: From Karamja Glory Teleport spot. Blue Path: From Mudskipper Point Fairy Ring Teleport (AIQ). Purple Path: From the Charter Ships. Tan Path: From the Entrana Hot Air Balloon. Cyan Path: From House Teleport in Rimmington. Orange Path: From the Port Sarim Jail. Now that you are on the Island go to the boat according to you combat level, heres the map: Veterans Boat: 100+, Most North Boat Intermediate: 70+, Center Boat Novice: 40+, Most South Boat The official worlds for Pest Control are: 53, 115, and 144 are the official themed worlds by Jagex. If you are using a themed world I suggest 144 as it is the most used out of all of them. Although I suggest that you join a PC Clan for best results. Once in the Boat you have to wait for 25 players to join you or you wait 5 Minutes for it to send you to the Void Island (NOTE: you must have at least 5 players to start a game). Here you will get the Starting Message: Here is a Pointer screen if you do not know what certain symbols mean: Green Box Purple Outline: The Void Knight health. When a portal is destroyed this will raise by 50. Orange Outline: Your Zeal (or damage done in the game). Cyan Outline: The time lest till the automatic win. Blue Box Blue Outline: The Portals Health. Grey Outline: A dead portals health, sometimes this will glitch and be green. Red Outline: A Unshielded portal. Green Outline: A Shielded portal, you cannot attack these. Cyan Outline: The direction of the portal. Red Box Red Outline: This indicates that a portals shield has been downed. Green Outline: This indicates that a spinner has exploded and all players near will be poisoned. Blue Outline: This is what your symbols should look like, unless you can type fast while playing. Orange Box Blue Outline: This is your compass, use it if you are starting out on PC. Red Outline: Use this instead of clicking on your stats menu to find out how much hp you have left. Purple Outline: Use this instead of clicking on your stats menu to find out how much prayer you have left. Green Outline: You can use this to toggle your Rune Energy and to see how much % you have left. Purple Box Green Outline: You should have coins in your inventory as you get them as a reward after each game. Purple Outline: This is a Pure Set (Super Attack and Super Strength pots), you can use this to help increase the amount of exp you get per game. Red Outline: This is a Zamorak Brew, you can use this to increase the amount of exp you get per round. Now you will take your Position: Positions Void Guard: Your job is to defend the Void Knight, he/she is in the center of the fort on an elevated platform. He/she will be raising a Void Knight Mace in the air. Number of Players required: 2-3 Priorities (1 is highest): 1. Kill all monsters attacking the Void Knight (Shifters First, then Torchers and Defilers). 2. Close Gates (South First (Main Gate), West and East next). 3. Fixing Broken Gates and Barricades (Gates before Barricades). Tip: If you are getting overpowered by shifters, you can lure nearby splatters to the void knight and kill them, as the void knight does not take damage from splatters. Also you can lure a brawler in front of the void knight to stop the defilers and torchers from outside attacking the void knight. Main Gate Defender: Your job is to attack all monsters that come within 4 squares of the front wall. Number of Players: 2-4 Priorities: 1. Close the Main Gate. 2. Attack all Torchers and Defilers. 3. Kill all Torchers and Defilers attacking the Void Knight. 4. Kill Brawlers, Shifters, Spinners, Ravagers, and Splatters. Tip: Use yourself as a shield (any monsters that have not come within 4 squares of the front wall you should attack and let them damage you, as you can die but the void knight cant), if you are near death, run away from the front gate, that way it will take the monsters longer to go back and attack the void knight. Portal Hunter: Your job is to attack Portals, this is the most complicated yet most needed job in Pest Control. Numbers of Players: 18-21 Priorities: 1. Kill Spinners healing the Portal. 2. Attack Spinners. 3. Kill the Portals. 4. Kill Monsters attacking the Void Knight. 5. Attack Monsters. Now to inform you more on the Job: Always run to the Yellow, Blue, or Purple Portal first! The Red Portal is NEVER unshielded first. When the game starts it will take 15 seconds for the first portal to get unshielded, 45 seconds for the second, 1:15 seconds for the third, and 1:45 seconds for the last. The Portals can only be unshielded in these orders: Blue, Red, Yellow, Purple. Blue, Purple, Red, Yellow. Yellow, Purple, Red, Blue. Yellow, Red, Purple, Blue. Purple, Yellow, Blue, Red. Purple, Blue, Yellow, Red. I suggest you memorize these if you plan on PCing for a long while, I will also tell you some tricks. 1. If the Yellow Portal is unshielded first, the Blue one is last. 2. If the Purple Portal is unshielded first, the Red on is last. Once the first 2 Portal shields are down, you should know exactly what one is going down next. NOTE: If there are too many people doing a position, you should leave and go do another. Once the Game is ended you will get one of these Messages: Win: Lose: No Zeal: Point Count: Maximum Points: The Order Now you should have chosen what position you should do and be very ready to switch if needed. Lets say you are on the boat to go to a game here are some things you should be doing: 1. Make sure you have run ON, you dont have to worry about not having enough for the next game, this will recharge at the end of each match. 2. Make sure you ALWAYS have auto retaliate OFF, if not this will screw you up very badly and then you will be a disadvantage to the team. 3. Be ready to have you special attack bar ACTIVATED, for when the first portal shield is down and you are about to attack it, the only reason you shouldnt have this activated is if you have an Armadyl Godsword, which you should save you special for helping KO the portal if a Spinner is healing it or for killing the Spinner that is healing the portal. 4. (Optional) Have your Potions ready to be drunk, try to move somewhere before you drink your potion so you save time. 5. When closing in on the gate you are exiting at, activate your prayers. 6. When your Portal you have been attacking is dead, dont just sit around trying to get your Zeal up on Monsters, go to the next portal in the order, and then start attacking monsters till it is unshielded. 7. When the game is done, dont bother to look at your points unless you really are sure you have near 100. Otherwise you may have to wait 2 minutes plus for the next round to end. Portal Information The Red Portal: Weakness: Crush Attacks. Suggested Weapon(s): Saradomin Sword (make sure its on a Crush attack]. Other Weapon(s): Godsword, Veracs Flail, if needed your Abyssal Whip. Other Info: This Portal never is the first in a sequence, therefore it is useless to run to this portal first. Also this Portal cannot be ranged from any range tower. The Yellow Portal: Weakness: Slash and Stab Attacks. Suggested Weapon(s): Abyssal Whip, Saradomin Sword, or Godsword. Other Weapon(s): DD(p++), Dragon Halberd, or Dragon Scimitar. Other Info: When this Portal is first in the sequence the Blue Portal is last. The Blue Portal: Weakness: Magic Attacks. Suggested Weapon(s): Magic Attacks, (any). Other Weapon(s): Anything else (if required). Other Info: This Portals main spawn point is 1 square farther out than any other portals. The Purple Portal: Weakness: Range Attacks. Suggested Weapon(s): Range Attacks. Other Weapon(s): Anything else (if required) Other Info: When this Portal is first in the sequence the Red Portal is last. NOTE: If a portal is destroyed the Void Knight will be healed 50 Health. IV. Rewards In this section of the guide I will tell you about the rewards you can get. You can exchange points that you get from winning games for many different things, here is a list of some of them: Raw materials (ore, seeds, herbs), Special Armor, Special Charms, and Experience in all combat stats except for Summoning. In some ways the armor that you get is just about useless but in some situations it is very good. History Pest Control Pest Control was released on 18-April-2006 later on 06-June-2006 it was updated and you could exchange 100 Points for a 10% bonus and you could but the Void Knight Mace. On 16-July-2007 there was a huge change in Pest Control, for nearly a month there where riots in Falador Center. People hated this update; it nearly cut the experience in half per hour. There was an upside to this update though: Void Knight Helmets. This completely changed great suits for combat as it was a great bonus. VI. Credits Jagex for making this game. The Runar
Great guide! I've played Pest Control a lot when I trained my att from 41 to 60 but this guide still has something new to me! Good and cheap weapons for PC are DDS or DD and also, yes, Dragon Mace. Dragon Mace has hard reqs for low-level players, but it hits nearly always and Spec. Att. is TOTAL PWNAGE!!! I can hit 25 when I use Ultimate Strenght and Str ammy and I only have str 62. -Tiigon The Runar's (OSRS) DIY blog - most viewed Blogscape blog ever! But remember you have a highly reduced chance to hit, and if you miss (which you usualy do at a lower level) the special will be worth nothing. However DDS special hits 2 times per special and has increased accuracy and damage, hence being beter for lower levels. So in order for the dragon mace to be worth it you would have to hit 2x your max hit with a DDS with special activated. And Dragon Mace does not double your damage. Although I guess if you could not use DDS dragon mace would be the next best special attack.
bluecentaur
How would the fighter helm be better than the helm of neitiznot?
soulegleon
I figured sooner or later someone would post that. Well i think that accuracy is better than strength. And the strength that the helm of Netiziot can barely make you hit 1 more damage. While the fighter hat gives +5 to ALL Melee attack stats, hence making it easier to hit. This means you get attack bonus to your DDS and Whip/Dragon Scimitar. I guess it would be your choice.

Thanks for replying to my earlier comment, it may have convinced me to go out and get me a fighter hat :P. This guide is very extensive with lots of information, will absolutely be using this guide when pcing. :) Tip:About the picture of your melee inventory, You should probably put combat potions in there. Since your going with the lower leveled strength and attack potions, why not combine them and make more room? making the time longer before you have to bank

A combat pot uses a harralander which is worth 1k. on the other hand you can get attack and strength pots from the warriors guild for very cheap. although i guess if you had the spare combat pots.... ill see if i can find enough info on them and test them out for myself  Also tomorrow I will be adding how to get into a PC world without having a clan or world switching alot. Yes you could PC with full rune and a whip. It's just you wouldnt hit as often, sometimes ending up in not getting your 50 damage. And yes it would help if you had rune boots/climbing boots The blue and yellow pots are strengths and attack. Yes you could easily PC without them. It just makes you hit more damage. You could also get and Obsidian Shield or a good defender (Defenders are from the warriors guild in Burthorpe) I can hit 30.. :o What does that have to do with my thread? Could you please post rating/constructive crtisism/positive feedback when you do post
Helbovie
You have most weaknesses for portals right, but i heard red is weak against crush attacks and yellow is weak against slash/stab. Good guide
