Group Work?

Well, I school at math class we have to make a design for a park. Everyone has to work in the groups they're assigned in.(4 People) The problem is

1) Person A can only copy, and is a lifeless shell.

2) Person B is an idiot, who can't do math to save his life. Plus lazy.

3) Person C is an idiot, and is lazy too.

So how do I tell the teacher all this? At this point, it looks like I have to do all the work on my own, and if I tell the teacher that I did all the work, all 4 people get a 0. (Out of 4)

Rants Part:

The group next two ours has a person B and C but not a person A. That means they have two people to do the work, and those two people are actually quite nice. So they have no problem with just doing with each other.

Give them work to do, do your own work. If they don't do it explain to the teacher thats their job and their work.

With so many trees in the city you could see the spring coming each day until a night of warm wind would bring it suddenly in one morning. Sometimes the heavy cold rains would beat it back so that it would seem that it would never come and that you were losing a season out of your life. But you knew that there would always be the spring as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen. When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person had died for no reason. In those days though the spring always came finally but it was frightening that it had nearly failed.

I often have the same problem in my classes but I actually don't mind. If I'm stuck with a bunch of people who don't know what they're doing, I'm fine with it. I can do my own work and get a good grade while I can have them do the easy stuff like writing things down or coloring/drawing things that need it. We all get good grades and everyone is happy.

I've ran into that problem before and I generaly figure I'll just give them some manual work to do that isn't hard.

It is a pain though, especialy with some teachers.

I never liked group work much in school. It's hard just finding time when everyone can meet (unless you're given time during class). Then, if you have a bunch of lazy people, it's even worse.

I think a lot of people have found themselves in a similar situation, where the others in the group are either incompetent or lazy. If you want to do well I suggest you try to do as much of the work yourself as possible. luckily for you, they're not eager as well as incompetent, which can often be the worst combination as they often do the work but do it badly (then you have to put up with it unless you have the heart to tell them it's not very good).

common problem in my field (engineering). everything is practically group work...well the first year not so much, but Junior and Senior year there is basically no tests, only design projects.

anyway, i suggest you tell your teacher about it. see what he/she can do...if he/she says "tough cookies", then just suck it up and do the work. the good thing is there is typically a peer evaluation at the end and then you get to trash your group members if they did no work :P

however, if there's no peer evaluation..i still suggest just sucking it up and doing it all/helping them lots. not much other option unless you want to fail :?

The difference between a good and a great student is the way they work with other people. A great student will work with who/what he's given and make a success out of it, while the merely good student will think of a way out for himself.

I had a problem recently, except I was the liability. It was on physics, which my knowlege of is basically zero (but I did ask our groups questions and do a little googling). I'm doing a chemistry assignment with the same people, though, and can actually help this time. :P

I always succeeded by just going ahead and doing the work myself, because getting others to do anything was just too hard. Does that count for a great student :P ?

One other thing to do if you get stuck with all the work is not do a good job. If you are the one doing all the work, you probably are also doing pretty well in the class and don't really need a good grade on it. I did that a few times, works pretty well. The best thing is when one of the group members gets mad, I called him out right in the middle of class and told the teacher he didn't do crap, and I should really get all the points that he got added to mine. Well, he gave the kid a zero, but didn't bump up my score any. Still it was fun to do.

I had the same experience a while ago for a lit class asignment. We had to make short "play/skit" like things for some book we were reading. I wrote the teacher a letter that said this:

Come wednesday, I feel our group will have nothing at all acomplished. Let me explain. One person in our wonderful group of four is a teenage alchoholic, who hides vodka in waterbottles. The other one shows up for school on occasion, occasion here being three or four times a month. The last does not know where to place a period in a sentence...

And she told me that I could write up what I was going to do, and I would be graded on that alone.

Whenever I was put in a group like that, I did all of the hard stuff (the part I didn't mind doing), well they did anything that I found boring or too easy. We generally got As every time, and I just let on that they helped.

Although, in my last Math class ever, we did some group work and the teacher let me trade a person to another group, with my friend coming to my group in return.

I prefer picking my group... I always get people more like me, in that they aren't afraid of a little hard work now and then.

hate those people, had one group assignment with 3 other people, me and 2 do their parts, 1 does nothing... he only says on the last moment he has done nothing (we had 2 weeks for somthing very easy) so we spend all our time that day to do his stuf (he was to lazy to do it that last day) and we get a lower grade because ''we didn't involve him into the work''. Didn't involve in the work my [wagon] he just didn't want to do [cabbage] about it.

so the moral is: never tel the teacher if some one does nothing.... or else you get a lower grade for more work.

I've been in a situation like that before. I am taking first-year Spanish, and we were assigned a group project. Unfortunately, I got stuck in a group with two very lazy students who play guitar all of class (yes the teacher lets them)

and one sort-of helpful friend of mine who is Mexican and is supposed to know Spanish, while I actually know more than him.

We had 5 days in class to work on the assignment. I was sick and stayed home three of the days. My group got no work done while I was gone. When I got back, I had finished the final draft of the script for the imaginary interview (that was the assignment). Unfortunately, there was no longer any time for us to check with our teacher for grammar mistakes. I memorized my lines, but only one other person in my group memorized theirs.

The result: My grade was brought down to an 80, a B-, which is really bad for me. Even worse: it counted as a test grade which then brought down my report card grade to an A-. So here I am with all A's and A+'s and one A-. Meanwhile my twin brother gets all A's and A+'s.

Yeah, that really pissed me off.
