Lionheart_0
Cancer,in most cases, doesn't just appear by itself. It's triggered by consuming too much harmful food, drinks.. Tobacco.. Excessive sugar, salt, etc.. But even if these things do trigger cancer, one must take into account A)Amount of consumption B)How much is needed to trigger cancer. Therefore there is no sure way to say "You will get cancer from this". We have to realize that each person reacts differently to different substances. Therefore too much pop for one person, may be all right for another. And anyways, there isn't a 100 percent way to tell of what causes cancer. Take for example a 7 year old kid that has cancer (I've known one). In that much of a lifetime, i really really doubt the kid had been exposed to so much food stuff that he had cancer. Therefore it can be concluded that it could be almost anything. (Environment, trigger genes from birth, ect...). BTW, water is not 100% good for you as some might think. As much as they say it is filtered... im willing to bet that bottled water does have some chemicals that can build up over time to be bad. And if you drink tap water, there is chlorine in that. Will H
Soft drink additive damages DNA: report by staff report Sunday, May. 27, 2007 at 9:39 PM The singularly profit driven Corporations have lied and lied regarding food additives, tobacco and climate changing pollutants. They only respond to VERY LARGE financial disincentives. A drive to sign up whole populations for a class action against these polluters is a great start for future mental and physical health. This action may also reveal the combination of additives in foods and the water supply that impairs the human will. Never before in human history have entire populations become so subservient, helpless and passive in the most alarming circumstances. The apathy and complacency witnessed today in the face of horrendous illegal wars, pollution induced climate change/GLOBAL warming, to name the two most catastrophic events, is beyond comprehension. Hit them hard and hit them in the pocket, the "class" of the action should include the entire population -- you and your children have been poisoned! A common preservative found in many soft drinks can cause serious cell damage and fatal illness, according to a UK study revealed last night. Research indicates that sodium benzoate, an ingredient in many soft drinks and sauces, has the ability to deactivate parts of DNA and eventually cause diseases such as Parkinson's and cirrhosis of the liver. Sodium benzoate is indicated in Australia as "Preservative (211)" on ingredients lists, and is included in Sunkist, Diet Coke, Sprite, Pepsi Max, and many other drinks and condiments. Peter Piper, a professor of molecular biology and biotechnology who has been studying sodium benzoate for eight years at Sheffield University, found that the preservative seriously damages living cells. "These chemicals have the ability to cause severe damage to DNA in the mitochondria to the point that they totally inactivate it: they knock it out altogether," Prof Piper told The Independent on Sunday. The findings came from laboratory tests conducted with sodium benzoate on living yeast cells. Prof Piper was alarmed by the chemical's destructive impact on the "power station" of the cells known as the mitochondria. "The mitochondria consumes the oxygen to give you energy and if you damage it ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢â∠~ W ~
Lionheart_0
Erm, there isn't any DNA in the mitochondria, only the nucleus. Any basic Biologist would tell you that. And Peter Piper, is that his real name? Sounds like a joke. :? OK, OK, this probably is serious, but I think you should choose different sources, this one is a joke. Ummmm, what lve of biology have you taken? The mitochondria and the golgi apparatus both have DNA of their own. In biology we learned that both organelles have very bacteria like characteristics. Since they basically are bacteria, they do in fact have DNA (Although it is never noted really) Edit: foud this Not only do mitochondria possess their own DNA, but it is circular, as is bacterial DNA; and DNA synthesis is continuous as opposed to that of eukaryotic nuclear DNA. Furthermore, the ratio of guanine-cytosine base pairs in mitochondrial DNA is proportionately higher, as with bacteria, than in eukaryotic nuclear DNA (Margulis, 1981, p. 206). http://cas.bellarmine.edu/tietjen/image ... eukary.htm Sig by IkuraiYour Guide to Posting! Lionheart_0
BTW, i would like to let everyone know that i only skimmed the article in the first place. If it does in fact only affect Mitochondrian DNA, then there is less chance of cancer, since it is not an organelle that is involved in mitosis. Sig by IkuraiYour Guide to Posting! highlanders
It's ridiculous to say water is bad, it's just another excuse people find to justify their bad "drinking" habbits. I don't drink tapwater though, there's fecal residues in it, they're not harmful, but it's discusting. im willing to bet that bottled water does have some chemicals that can build up over time to be bad He "bets", he has no information, or anything to back it up. Water is good for health, your body is 75% made from it. Softdrinks contain caffeine which increase the urinary flow, resulting in dehydration, and that certainly is not good. And don't get me started on diet softdrinks, there's tons of webpages stating the dangers of aspartame. 2480+ total

Lionheart_0
:? Water itself is not dangerous. It is only what is put into it. Seriously, have you ever had a person say water itself is bad? I really doubt anyone is that stupid.... There is always a chance of bacteria. Heck, the second you open a bottle of water, hundreds of bacteria contaminate your water. highlanders
Water is carefully monitored, sometimes there's some water-contamination accidents, but they're very rare. If you live in a big city, it's very unlikely, almost impossible, for something like that to happen. Ditto for bottled water, the consequences would be horrible for a company to have water contamination accidents. Four or three years ago, experts tested the watertap Montreal water, compared it to known bottled water brands' and it comes out the watertap water was cleaner than almost all bottle water brands. So really, no fear to have, unless you live in a small city with questionable water systems, or if you buy suspicious looking bottled water. 2480+ total
anonymous1234
thank god the closest thing to having soda i've had is seltzer. water and organic milk for me! and by the way, water is not bad in any way unless you drink so much your stomach fills, it goes up your esophagous (sp?) and flows down through trachea into your lungs. Besides being almost impossible, that is not the problem with drinking too much water. The reason we need water in the first place is to keep the flow of oxygen from our blood to our cells proper. Now, this is done through Osmosis. Basically concentration of substances go from high to low sources. If water intake is too high, the amount of water around cells that help oxygen transfer becomes too great, thus causing the concentration outside of the cells to be higher. Guess where the excess water goes? Up, inside the cells, thus cause it to become hypotonic. Since it is hypotonic (A higher concentration inside), there is a large chance that it wil lyse (Burst) Sig by IkuraiYour Guide to Posting! dsavi
Sunlights bad for ya too, should we all stay indoors? Sunlight is actually very good for you, and if you don't get at least 10 minutes a day, it can lead to problems. Exposure to sunlight causes the skin to create Vitamin D (I think its that one). But then again, moderation, so only 10 minutes a day is all you need. BTW. With this article, if it really is true that these things can kill our DNA, then that leads to a multitude of possibilities. Damaged genes in sperm or eggs would cause problematic children The possibility of those diseases listed in the article Cancer (Due to the damage, it may cause the cell to continually reproduce, hence cancer) In finland sometomes I wont see the sun for Weeks. Drives. Me. Nuts.
