Satanism

Indulging yourself all the time and having a belief that you are the only thing of importance in the world isn't a healthy way to live. And I'd argue that the only real friends people who follow the satanism cult would have are fellow members themselves for that very reason.

You do have a point somewhat. Indulgence all the time and selfishness all the time dosen't really go all that far to solving all of the worlds ills hence why not everyone will take it literally. They're pretty laissez faire from what I can tell.

The second part of your post may be true of a minority within the 'cult' (it's not a cult nor a religion really; it's a philosophy) but certainly not for all of them. They aren't all social recluses who can't make friends outside thier own world.

The guy in the video ('high priest' Peter Gilmore) explains that some are police officers, in the armed forces or have other normal jobs. Some just don't want to admit it for fear of being judged by others.

Wouldn't a cop living by this philosophy be putting the people he's supposed to protect and the laws he's supposed to uphold in jeopardy? From what I understand he'll do whatever benefits him the most, not the community or the law. I know it's extreme to assume that but you can't help but wonder when someone takes selfishness as far as "satanists" seem to.

Point is you'd figure a satanist would choose a career that doesn't involve sacrificing them self for a greater good, like law or country.

Why? That greater good effects everyone. I'm sure just because they are labled as santanist they understand the need for protection of others so they themselves can be protected. It's not like they are void of all human emotion or logic with one devout belief to always do what directly affects their selfishness.

And Viktor, Solipsism is a ridiculous philosophy. Read Descartes "Meditations" and it has many reasonable reasons as to why things outside of ourselves exist even though it relies on God for somepart. Things such as our inability to create new objects in our mind. We draw from something to imagine, and therefore it's reasonable to assume that something exists. For example we can't imagine up new objects, we can simply place together objects we already understand and see. The only logical explanation for solipsism is to assume we are being decieved by something or someone. Descartes at that point "proves" Gods existance and Gods perfection and hence inability to decieve us.

With so many trees in the city you could see the spring coming each day until a night of warm wind would bring it suddenly in one morning. Sometimes the heavy cold rains would beat it back so that it would seem that it would never come and that you were losing a season out of your life. But you knew that there would always be the spring as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen. When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person had died for no reason. In those days though the spring always came finally but it was frightening that it had nearly failed.

Satenza summed it up pretty well. They aren't all bigoted mindless remnants of people who follow a doctrine and a doctrine only. As the bold in your comment states, rocketman, those would likely be extreme cases. Methinks places like the police acadamy or defence force can spot nutters from a mile away anyway.

I can see some pretty accurate depictions of society coming out of the satanic philosophy as well as some which might be considered a little left field.

A moral philosophy that does nothing but accurately describe the state of society is kind of worthless. Saying "this is the way things are" is not a moral statement. Saying "this is the way things should be" is a moral statement, and if everybody (tried to) act out Satanism this world would be an awful place. It can't be universalized. There aren't enough resources, not to mention it denies all the virtues we admire in other people.

You can say the exact thing about all other religions when taken to an extreme.

Hey there, don't like Satanism?

But still having strong desires to be greedy, selifsh, and indulgeness in your life style?

Boy then do we have a deal for you! Check out the Savior indulgeing in himself!!!

/End Sarcasm

This cult and the one mentioned above are a bunch of fools.

Lets have a Dictionary Lesson from Noah Webster.

SELF'ISHLY

The exclusive of a person to his own interest or happiness; or that supreme self-love or self-preference, which leads a person in his actions to direct his purposes to the advancement of his own interest, power or happiness, without regarding the interest of others. Selfishness, in its worst or unqualified sense, is the ver essence of human depravity, and it stands in direct opposition to benevolence, which is the essence of the divine character. As God is love, so man, in his natural state, is selfishness

INDULGE

To permit to be or to continue; to suffer; not to restrain or oppose; as, to indulge sloth; to indulge the passions; to indulge pride, selfishness or inclinations.

Only a lifestyle of helping others does one have true happiness. Living for yourself will never give you significance.

You, yourselfs have said "we have all had our share of guilty pleasures", but that does not make it right to join this cult or even accept the tinest bit of its ways, otherwise you would have said "innocent pleasures".

This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, truce breakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. Timothy II 3:1-5

Bolded are the things that satanism teachs that are against the will of God.

Aside that, look at what else is written in the verses, does that sound like our society today? It sure does to me!

Here is a history lesson for those who think that the world was always this way, and because the media reports bad news that its really not bad as we "think".

One of the Founding Fathers, James Kent, who became the supreme court justice of new york.

In his own words, he said he was apalled that in 16 years they had 8 murders in the state of new york.

Chicago has a murder every hour.. and he's shocked that he gets 8 murders in SIXTEEN YEARS!?

If you seriously believe the world only "seems" worse today because of the news media, wake up and do some research on how the world really was back then instead of making "assumptions" that you know it was horrible.

I'd rather beleive in this philosophy than a paradoxical mess of a God who preaches intolerance and cruelty. Who I am sure set a beautiful example for you when wiping out the entire population of the world (genocide) save a man and his boat.

The world has changed for the better, if you can't see advancement of healthcare, liberties, acceptance and tolerance then your clouded by your own religions agenda too much to see anything clearly.

I'm not saying it's the best set of morals in the universe nor should you take them as absolute, same with any set of morals. As far as I'm concerend, there's nothing wrong with a little indulgence in worldly pleasures. Being uptight and fearful of breaking a moral code your whole life is no way to live in my opinion. We all have a natural sense of altruism which can be brought to the fore if we keep in mind not to take any set of absolute morals as some sort of fact.

And @ Defender: Have you watched the video in the opening post? I'd really rather you didn't label satanism as a cult for a few reasons. Firstly, it's not a cult; it's a philosophy. Secondly, it's not acceptable in my opinion just because it dosen't gel with your world view that you would label it with something as brash as 'cult'.

If it weren't for the media, I'd be amazed at how much the satanist philosophy has been distorted. If it weren't for knowlege I already have, it would amaze me that people would feel so inclined to instantly wash thier hands with a philosophy mainly because of it's name. Take the emotion out of it and it's really not that hard to see that it's not evil/demonic/anti-christic/etc.

Great summery.

My take on it is that even though it preaches the idea of "live life for yourself" and to indulge yoursel doesn't mean that it is against helping others. Some people enjoy being in the force. Be it for the excitement or to help others just because its helping someone else doesn't mean you can't like it, even if you are a "satanist".

I would think that many of these people enjoy helping out others and indulge them self in helping others to the best they can. It follows the ideal s that the 'church' offers so to speak.

The thing is it doesn't say that you should be a kind person, evil person, anything like that. It simply states to enjoy life and indulge yourself in the pleasures of life.

It can only be considered genocide if everyone was wiped out, but 8 people were spared, not 1.

Its also intresting to note your perspective on it. If you read Noah you would know the reason behind the flood. God did it because they were all killing, stealing, thieving, murdering, lieing, being adulters. They wasn't "good folks".

Definatly not a enviroment you would want to live in.. yet so God decides to start anew.. but by your standards he is considered a murderer, but the people who was murdering people get much sympathy from you?

So its okay for people to kill people, but for God? Oh noes.. Silent Treatment! Reject him!

As for the world changing for the better.. I see only the world advancing in its technologies. We went from the agricultural age, to the industrial age, and now to the technology age. But if you REALLY believe that your TV, or your remote control, or your computer monitor, or perhaps your mouse makes you a BETTER person in life.. then I think your judgement has been clouded.

Good people have good morales. Yet in todays society, morality is not teached, just knowledge. So that leaves us with a generation of kids not knowing right from wrong. But maybe their Nintendo DS has made them a better person.

Continue to claim that i'm only 1 person with 1 view and that is of a Christian View. I can always claim that your 1 person, and with only 1 view, and that would be of a atheist view.

Its intresting to note that you think just because i'm a christian, all of a sudden you use words like "my own religious agenda". Yet because your a athiest, that automaticly makes you a open minded person? And you can't have any selfish agendas? Thus automatically making your way of thinking, your lifestyle, and your perspectives the right way to live life?

Here's a truth, everyone has a religion, whether it has a name or not, because everyone believes in something.

And @ Defender: Have you watched the video in the opening post? I'd really rather you didn't label satanism as a cult for a few reasons. Firstly, it's not a cult; it's a philosophy. To answer your first question, I have watched the entire video, and I know he "claims" its not a cult, but it is. Have you watched the video I posted? The "proffesionals" claim that the Jesus guy is a cult, who practice closely related to the same thing the satanists are teaching. One is a self created doctrine, the other is using the bible as a excuse to live selfishly, not to mention you'd have to be a nut to think that guy was the christ in the first place.

So basically i'm ignorant because I call it a cult? Maybe you think I am ignorant because i'm just like the millions of other christians who see the word "satan" and say evil at start off? That would be judging a book by its cover, would it not? Thats why I watched the entire video, and here is my opinion on it here after.

Okay, well lets see what Noah Webster says philosophy is.

Literally, the love of wisdom. But in modern acceptation, philosophy is a general term denoting an explanation of the reasons of things; or an investigation of the causes of all phenomena both of mind and of matter. When applied to any particular department of knowledge, it denotes the collection of general laws or principles under which all the subordinate phenomena or facts relating to that subject, are comprehended. Thus, that branch of philosophy which treats of God, &c. is called theology; that which treats of nature, is called physics or natural philosophy; that which treats of man is called logic and ethics, or moral philosophy; that which treats of the mind is called intellectual or mental philosophy, or metaphysics.

The objects of philosophy are to ascertain facts or truth, and the causes of things or their phenomena; to enlarge our views of God and his works, and to render our knowledge of both practically useful and subservient to human happiness.

To me, its a cult because Philosophy is somehwat untested ground. If it was tested, you would know the results, and the philosophy would no longer exist. It would be a Fact or a Truth.

Based on this Webster, philosophy is to find out the truth of the matter. So these guys believe that.. being selfish and greedy.. and just living for pleasure rather than for others.. is soon going to be a known as a undiscovered truth? (Look at how many live for themselfs now!)

Well lets see.. if other countries were self indulging with their oil.. and said "we won't sell".. i'm sure that wouldn't hurt us.. or perhaps if the truck riders who bring new supplies to the businesses decided their going on a selfish trip for pure happiness... I wouldn't be shocked if business'es closed down?

Being Selfish is a path to destruction, its been proven many times as a lesson in history. The same issue, the same result, everytime.

You know, I wouldn't be suprised if they did drugs, after all they have the mentality, "if it feels good, do it".

Well, what if I had the best drink in the world? It tasted so good you would give up everything you own for it? Only one tiny problem with the the drink though, and that is one of the ingredients is poison.. so if you drink it, then you die. However, the poison does not directly kill you, it kills you after a period of say.. 10 to 20 years. Would you take a drink?

Now you can be smart and say "hell no!".. or you can be a satanist, indulge yourself the drink and be dead in 10 years from now.

How about drug addicts? They are indulging themselfs are they not? Yet we all know its not worth it to do drugs. They can not only cost your job, but mainly your health, which reduces your life spand.

Indulging, WILL reduce your life spand if you do it consistently. Just as too much water is bad for you, just as too much sex is bad for you (because you can get std's from doing 1 night stands), just as too many pills are bad, and too many of anything can and will hurt you. Its called overdose, and thats what indulging does. It doesn't just take a pleasure and stop there, it wants more and never stops till it gets it.

You will have to use self control to stop, but thats not what indulging is about! Its about living for yourself and no one else!

Anyone can live life for themselfs, but remember this. Love thinks of OTHERS first. So where there is selfishness, love does not exist.

You can say i'm bad for calling them a cult, but anyone who says "I don't care about you, your problems, the worlds problem, i'm just gonna go do what feels good, screw you, plz be a member" has one hell of a messed up mind.

If you really think these people will sacrifice their life for your life when all they can think about is their own... all I can say is wow.. keep wishing good-will and morality was in their heart.. but apparently they wasn't taught it at all, so don't be shocked when a satanist doesn't take a bullet for you, or your kids.

And as for your last paragraph, if you NEED to take the emotion out to understand it, then that right there should tell you something isn't right with it. Oh wait.. let me guess.. us little christians are so wronnnnnnng for for not being open minded.. yet were suppose to believe we have the absolute truth in the bible already? Shame on us for not denoucing Gods ways because these guys here "may" have the truth? Which would be "selfishness and living life for yourself = Best way to live".

I don't think I could call myself a christian if I acted that way, easily giving up on my views, and hoping from 1 religion to another. Sounds like insecurity to me.

So many people say we are wrong for trying to convert people, yet everywhere i look, it seems people want to convert me away from God..

So exterminating a race all of a sudden isn't genocide until you exterminate every last one of them?

Its also intresting to note your perspective on it. If you read Noah you would know the reason behind the flood. God did it because they were all killing, stealing, thieving, murdering, lieing, being adulters. They wasn't "good folks".

He exterminated almost an entire race because of sins. I contest the fact that everyone whom he murdered was a murderer. That doesn't make it right anyway. Do two wrongs make a right? Obviously not because we still have murderers now.

Definatly not a enviroment you would want to live in.. yet so God decides to start anew.. but by your standards he is considered a murderer, but the people who was murdering people get much sympathy from you?

He is a murderer, he is a mass murderer. He is worse than Hitler. The only difference is that you call him God.

So its okay for people to kill people, but for God? Oh noes.. Silent Treatment! Reject him!

Of course it's not ok. For either of them to kill people.

No, i think the principles of freedom and equality and healthcare and increasing tolerance do.

Good people have good morales. Yet in todays society, morality is not teached, just knowledge. So that leaves us with a generation of kids not knowing right from wrong. But maybe their Nintendo DS has made them a better person.

Morality is just a word to make someones opinion more valuable. Such as "Homosexuality is wrong because it's immoral" means completley nothing. Yet to you, thats a good reason. I don't have morals, i have common sense. Am I a bad person?

Continue to claim that i'm only 1 person with 1 view and that is of a Christian View. I can always claim that your 1 person, and with only 1 view, and that would be of a atheist view.

I don't have an atheist view since im not atheist. I am agnostic, to claim atheism is just a ridiculous as claming the existance of God.

As i said, im not atheist. Agnostisism is the only logical stance to take on the issue. I don't have a problem with deists.

Here's a truth, everyone has a religion, whether it has a name or not, because everyone believes in something.

So what religion do i belong too?

So many people say we are wrong for trying to convert people, yet everywhere i look, it seems people want to convert me away from God..

You are wrong, you cant accept the vitues of freedom and empiricism and that makes you ignorant to everyone else apart from yourself and small section of christians who interpret the bible the same as you.

Defender, you talk a lot of the dangers of self-indulgence, but I think you're missing the point. Satanism doesn't mean that you have to have absolutist self-indulgent morals, it simply means you're not afraid to live your life in a way that you see fit, and not dictated by a higher being. That doesn't mean that you necessarily live for the now, or live to the extreme, it just means you live how you want to live.

If it's a cult because its philosophy is on untested ground what does that make your, or any religion? I've yet to see any arguments for 'fact' or 'truth' within any.

You're also then making false assumptions based on Webster, i.e. someone's philosophical outlook is the truth on the matter. That might be true for hard sciences, but for things like moral codes you can't define an asbolute truth when it comes to those.

You said selfishness leads to destruction, when in fact I could argue ultimate selfish motivations on the gene centric level of things is actually what has advanced us so far. That's not to say altruism doesn't exist, it does, simply that it is driven by interior motives.

Satanism is an idea that 15 year olds with terrible haircuts try to get into because they want to be goths. Any other are usually bald ugly 40 year olds in long leather jackets who live with their mum. I'll happily stereotype because i can.

Let me see if I get this straight...

Satanists indulge in "sin" which could mean selfishness, lust or a myriad of other behaviours. This is not necessarily detrimental to society and many of the posters of this topic have said that only in rare cases will this manifest itself adversly.

A sub-theme of this thread seems to be an attack on organised religion - with reference to the fundamentalists/literalists as evidence; could not the same be said for Satanism? If one chose to take this to an extreme it would be detrimental to society as with all belief. I ask that all those who attack religion to remember that for every nut-job, crackpot and closed minded idiot there are hundreds, if not thousands of people with faith who are good people who follow moral codes they believe in and are all too often ignored because they don't raise their voice as loud as the crazies.

I don't know where i'm going now tbh, revision has killed my mind and its too late for a strong post; I just don't want a thread on satanism to turn into another anti-christian war like so many others.

I won't be able to check this thread for days likely...so please try and not let it degrade like so many others.

Definitely, absolutist morals are dangerous, but that's not what satanism advocates.

I wish I could lead myself to be blinded by something like Satanism :D Do what you want and enjoy it, forget the others. Unfortunately I'm too nice to do that and I'm just not thinking on a spiritual level anymore, no point in guessing because we will never know. I'll just take life as it comes and enjoy it, without worry but without the complete lack of care these guys show.

It can only be considered genocide if everyone was wiped out, but 8 people were spared, not 1.

You're wrong. It's still genocide. You don't have to wipe out an entire species for it to be genocide.

What would you define as better? More religion? In my sense of the word, the world is better - whether you notice it or not, there is less violence. More fear (wonder where that comes from) but less violence.

Good people have good morales. Yet in todays society, morality is not teached, just knowledge. So that leaves us with a generation of kids not knowing right from wrong. But maybe their Nintendo DS has made them a better person.

And I suppose you claim some religion is needed to teach morality, yes? That would be fine if that was the only thing they taught.

That couldn't be more of a false statement. Added to that, you're saying it as if it's a bad thing. A belief is not a religion and I'd argue that atheists have NO unjustified beliefs whatsoever (that's if they are true atheists). Don't try to argue against atheists with that whole 'atheism is a belief or a religion' argument. It annoys me to no end because it's wrong and a misrepresentation of who we are.

What are you talking about? No it seems I haven't seen your video, sorry. If you think LaVeyan Satanism is a cult, I'm sorry, you'd be wrong. It has nothing to do with religion or trying to scam your money. It's a philosophy which can, and I'd argue, is adopted loosely. It teaches not to be a sheep and think for yourself thus to not get sucked into any cult. It's not a cult, it really just isn't.

You think everyone follows this philosophy to the very last word like a mindless bigot?

You know, I wouldn't be suprised if they did drugs, after all they have the mentality, "if it feels good, do it".

That really is rediculous, seriously. It's slander and it's just rediculous. You have no idea what these people choose to do with thier lives and have no right to judge them no matter what your beliefs say. If they do drugs and get caught, they'll get prosecuted to the full extent of the law. I've even heard the leader of the philosophy say that if anyone commits a violent act, it's stupid and they should get prosecuted to the full extent of the law. They have the ability to think independant of thier philosophical ideas.

Yet another rediculous statement. DO YOU REALLY THINK THAT EVERYONE WHO FOLLOWS THIS TAKES IT AS A LITERAL INTERPRETATION OF HOW TO LIVE YOUR LIFE? As I said, defender, not everyone is a mindless bigot who needs a doctrine to live by. Satanism is just a bunch of ideas. Ideas can't hurt you or turn you crazy unless you are deat set nuts.

Yes, so according to your infinite wisdom, all satanists must be drug junkies, pr0n addicts, prostitutes, obese, lazy individuals. You are really starting to annoy me.

You will have to use self control to stop, but thats not what indulging is about! Its about living for yourself and no one else!

Anyone can live life for themselfs, but remember this. Love thinks of OTHERS first. So where there is selfishness, love does not exist.

Again, you're assuming satanists are endlessly selfish. You are a very diffiult person, defender.

You can say i'm bad for calling them a cult, but anyone who says "I don't care about you, your problems, the worlds problem, i'm just gonna go do what feels good, screw you, plz be a member" has one hell of a messed up mind.

This is incredibly ignorant of you, really. It's a bunch of ideas. If you don't like it, and you clearly dont, then please grow some faith and leave it be. It can't hurt you. I'll say it again, just because you follow some ideas dosen't mean you're a bigoted mindless human being with no sense of compassion or common sense.

I'm not asking you to change your beliefs. Infact, I'm not asking you to do anything! This is a topic about a philosophy! It's a bunch of ideas, mate. If your post has done anything it's affirmed a stereotype in my mind. HAVE MORE FAITH AND LEAVE THE IDEAS BE, THEY WON'T HURT YOU. Of course, there will be extreme cases, JUST LIKE THERE ARE EXTREME CASES IN ANY RELIGION OR ANY GROUP OF PEOPLE ON THE ENTIRE PLANET.

I don't think I could call myself a christian if I acted that way, easily giving up on my views, and hoping from 1 religion to another. Sounds like insecurity to me.

So many people say we are wrong for trying to convert people, yet everywhere i look, it seems people want to convert me away from God..

Again, they are philosophical musings. It never ceases to amase me how people claim that faith strengthens thier life no no end but at the first hint of anything contrary to it, it seems to vanish.

~Defender~

Ugh. That was difficult. BOLD = ME

You'd be largely correct there, mate. As I think I stated in the above post (sorry for the double) there will inevitably be crazies in any schism of ANY group of people. If you want any reassurance, all the stories of goat slaying, human or baby sacrafices, bloodletting fantasies/ whatever any other sick, twisted thing you want to think of done in the name of 'satan' are often done as a tribute to evil. As satanism has nothing to do with the biblical satan (watch the video, people, it's easy) these people are often loosely associated with LaVeyan Satanism at best.

Just as a sidenote I'd like to thank the majority of you for staying largely on the issue at hand. :)

Perhaps you've heard of it or perhaps not and you think it's some occult sheep sacraficing cult or something like that. Satanism in the organised sense was founded by Anton LaVey in 1966 and the satanic bible written in 1969. They stand for an atheistic wordlview which seeks to enhance our lives through indulgence in worldly pleasures. A vid:

I'd argue that everyone on a basic level through our biology is somewhat adhered to the satanist phiosophy - lust, greed, indulgence in any worldly pleasure without doing harm to others, revenge, etc. It all sounds a bit extreme at times but I'd class myself atleast partly adhered to this phiosophy. What about you?

Take the emotion out of it and think before running away because of the name. Also if you don't like the biblical satan, this philosophy actually has nothing to do with him. So don't start getting freaked out. I just thought that this would be somethig a little different or left field to talk about.

Yeah, it's pretty crazy. The basic jest of it is putting yourself before others, and not really caring about a whole lot (mainly people).

But it's funny, everyone thinks you have to have blood sacrifices and worship Satan.

Ghost: I am prejudice towards ignorance, so that would explain why I appear to be so.

I'd go with a less negative spiel and say it's basic jist is living your life to the fullest extent without fear of repercussion. You see, you'd be right in a sense, but some people will come on and lash onto what you said as if satanists are morally bankrupt and common senseless, mindless, sadistic remnants of human beings.

And what do you think a requirement of that is? What MPC said.
