In need of some 'Basic' information... That some of you may know.

I recently watched Micheal Moore's "SiCKo" movie and it got me thinking.

What if a person not native to say, England or France, wanted to become a citizen of the country and go to school, and live there?

Would that person receive the benefits natives to the country get, like free health care, and free college? I mean a main reason that natives get that is because of high taxes, but what if a non-native came in and gained citizenship and wanted to go to school there?

At one point in the movie a man blew out his shoulder trying to cross Abbey road on his hands, he then went to a hospital and got free care, only having to pay for the drugs. And this guy wasn't even a citizen.

Personally, I myself plan on moving out of the USA as soon as possible because I have a passion in me for culture, where can I find the culture I'm looking for?... in Europe and surrounding countries. All the while watching this movie I wondered why not move out quickly and reap and possible benefits that may come of it.

I've looked around the net and couldn't find any information regarding something like this.

Anyone have any input as to what would happen? Simple Question...

I was wondering the same thing. Great movie. Can't wait for the debating to come... :D

From my understanding the person would receive the health care benefits. Although don't take my word for it, I've already proven myself an idiot when it comes to health care and government systems. :-w

Yes, same thing was shown when they went to Cuba, all the while violating the trade embargo :P

I really wanna know if its the same for education.

I talked to a friend who was in Germany for a year and he said there is alot more to it, but he had to go and couldn't explain.

I'd imagine if you were a citizen and paid taxes, you'd get benefits...

I also would like to move out of America, but I doubt I will. I hate Euro-cars and a lot of Euro-people...The kind who think soccer actually matters, you know...THOSE people. :P

I don't know much about what you are asking, but I do know that Micheal Moore used a lot of extreme exxageration, and left out a lot of statistics in order to make his opinion seem the reasonable one.

Check out that article ^^. It will show you just how much Moore exxagerated.

I've always felt as if I'm the only person who can understand the concept of sarcasm on the internet.

Michael Moore? Baseless facts and rhetorical questions?! All in a slightly happy voice?!

Yeah, anyone can do it, whether or not it actually has any value I extremely doubt. The point is, don't be encouraged over something that man has portrayed.

This is news, why?

Moore is vicious. He's as bad as mainstream media when it comes to skewing evidence.

Have you ever met Europeans? From my experience, they are much friendlier (and more attractive) than your average American.

Yep. :)

The movie has a clear bias and was only meant to get people thinking about the health care in the US compared to other countries.

Whenever any foreign exchange student comes to our school from Europe they always comment on how good looking Americans are.

I havnt seen the movie, or even heard of it, lol.

I dont think that it is right for people to cross countries and recieve free things. I also dont tihnk that it is right to be classed as a "so and so citizen", when they have spent hardly any of their life there.

If you become a citizen and pay taxes and contribute to society, why shouldnt you get the benifits?

Your best bet on getting accurate information about this, would be contacting the embassy of the country (countries) you're interested in.

For studying in the European Union this link might help.

(And the guy recieving free medical care probably has something to do with the Hippocratic oath/Duties of a doctor: care for your patient before anything else)

Not 100% sure, but if you naturalise to become a Frenchman, Brit, whatever, you should have the same rights. You get to vote and pay the same taxes, so you're also entitled to health care, social security, education... You could consider Belgium. We have a very tight social security net. The downside: high taxes obviously :D.

Don't hold me to to this, but I think you have to have been in the UK and working for at least five years before you can declare yourself a citizen of the UK.

I dunno, I don't like talking about this kinda stuff. The UK's traditionally always been open with its borders, so it's kinda un-British to talk about Britishness really, and I hate it when you hear all the headlines saying, "They're coming over here and stealing our taxes". Bit OT there...

Unfortunately, because UK health care is "Free", anyone can have treatment here. There are many instances where people have come to the UK for treatment that they would've had to pay for in their own country.

You do not have to be a British citizen to receive free health care here.

The reason I say "Free", is because it isn't free at all. We all pay National Insurance, which is used towards things like funding the health service. This is automatically deducted from our wages thus, it's compulsory. It is dependant on how much you earn. I typically pay ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã150-̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã200 ($300-$400) per month. I imagine that's a lot more than you pay for health insurance State side?

I'm not certain about education, but I know that illegal immigrant, whilst waiting processing are given free education and health care.

You know what though, I'm not complaining about it though... I don't have a problem with giving these unfortunates stuff like that. The majority of foreigners I know living in our boarders work harder than any Brit I know and earn their perks. The problem here is the "born and bred" freeloaders, who refuse to work or have too many children, who earn many times what I earn via state benefits. My taxes pay for them :(

The Daily Hate Mail? Well with headlines like "Oranges linked to breast cancer" (seriously, this is some of the stuff they come up with) - then I'm guessing people read it seriously...for comic relief :P

Basically NHS is free for all, however because it is free there are huge waiting lists.

Any person from any country can come to the UK and get treated for free, thats why we get loads of HIV patents from other countries coming here to get treated because the drugs are very expensive.

About schools, state school are free for all some request you to pass a test to get in etc.

A friend to all is a friend to none.
