Intelligent people playing runescape

Nope.

Not to stereotype, but it seems like most people who play forget completely about real life. And that's not a very intelligent thing to do, now is it.

Because intelligent people know the process of work leads to fun, while unintelligent (usally immautre kids) do not.

And please tell me how a girl/boyfriend makes you out of RuneScape and your friends don't? Family? Something else?

And who's to say the virtual life isn't better than the real life? There is a reason people try to escape reality so much. I say you do whatever floats your boat, it's your choice.

As for the intelligence thing...there may be some correlation (but you could by no means even develop a sterotype). The smarter kids in my high school class nearly all played video games, much more so than many of the other kids. Computer gamers, as a whole, were more intelligent than the console gamers. But that's just an observation from one high school...so I don't know. I can see why you'd draw that conclusion...but like I said, I wouldn't automatically assume anything about anyone.

Girlfriends/boyfriends are very time consuming for younger people...at least in my experience. They'll get you away doing other things besides video games quite easily (sometimes abandoning friends for a while, as happened with one of my friends...although he later realized his mistake and the group of us welcomed him back).

Oh, and I would suppose the intelligence correlation is more personality dependent than anything else. Quiet(er) kids are more likely to be more devoted to school, so they may just be trying harder. Just an idea, I guess.

All it really means that intelligent people have the patience to bother doing something to gain something, which is basically what you need to play this game, i think most kids find it boring

I am woodcutting ALL the time i am on , so if anybody need to chat or anything im always at gnome tree stronghold.

That entirely wrong. I don't think the level of enjoyment depends on your level of intelligence. Many not-so-smart people enjoy the game much more than smart people, and vice versa.

Ok, I am a sophmore in college majoring in animal science/pre vet, so I hope you would consider me somewhat intellegent (though my spelling blows). I enjoy playing runescape because it is a way to take a break from concentrating on studying, working on projects, etc... It gives me a way to relax my mind as I use it in a diffrent way than I do with school, and depending on what Im doing I can almost clear my mind completely. I would assume other "intellegent" people feel somewhat the same way I do. Also for the people who say this game ruins their life and to get friends and gf/bfs to, I have several friends who I hang out with on a daily basis, as well as a long term boyfriend, who I am engaged to, and I still usually play at least on a weekly basis (depending on whats going on in school, for the summer its everyday) even if its only for an hour. This is just my out look on it, hope it helps some.

Current goal: Getting enough prayer pots to finish my last four quests.

Have you seen some of the people that play runescape, I would no call them intelligent. ::'

Anyways, it may seem that a lot of intelligent people play runescape because a lot of intelligent people generally lean towards games instead of social activities, not saying all, but alot.

I am personally of the opinion that there are three types of people, each having two subcultures in them.

1: a:least populous, those who collectively call themselves geeks. We are very inteligent in narrow fields and sometimes just about everything. Our social skills stink but our gaming is the tops of all.

b: These are those who aspire to be like us but have characteristics that heavily rely on the other two.

2:a:most celebrated, these are the athletes and sportsman who do these things with all their ability. What separates them from some Geeks is that they are socially adept and in some cases, perfectionists.

b: these are those who fail at sports, yet try their hardest to do better.

3:a: gangsters, these are the most hated in newsmedia, yet they feel wronged. Often groups of Black young toughs who generally live in an anarchistic and lawless manner. This includes Hispanic and asian gangs.

b:Those white boys and other such things trying to be "cool" They are merely cast offs, scorning the geek and unable to aspire to even the lowest loser echelons of Athletes.

That's my synopsis of young people today. All RS players will fall under one of these three categories.

RS seems to have the reputation of being the stupid people dumbster of MMORPG's. Unfortunately, in general and on average, that seems to be true.

The biggest reason is simply that a lot of younger kids play RS. They may not be stupid for their age, but most (I will not say all, there are always exceptions) kids aged 8-10 are simply not developed enough to know how to behave themselves in a community environment. At home or at school, there are the parents and teachers which can help the kids and control their behaviour. In RS, they are exposed to a world which neither cares nor controls them.

Nobody cares, because everyone is playing the game for themselves, not babysitting other players unless they are personal friends. Nobody controls, because Jagex rules are not effective against kids who are too young to understand the consequences of bad behavior, as these rules are always applied ex-post-facto. A young child cannot fully comprehend that misbehaving now will cause him/her to be banned a week later. Unless they are controlled on the spot, nothing will stop them. PMods can give the occasional immediate mute, but they are so scarce it carries next to no effect.

Shielded behind the computer screen, thinking they are immune and can do whatever they want, most young kids just cannot realize that their behavior affects other people. Hey, if it's OK to randomly kill the lvl 2 RS character called "Man", why is not OK to swear at the lvl 74 character called "pker949"? Kids are unable to differentiate, they consider the whole game to be made just for them.

And it's really not the fault of the kids. It's the fault of the parents.

Why most kids play RS over other MMORPGs though? A few reasons:

- Very easy to play. Kids may not have $60 on hand to buy the latest MMORPG from a store, and may not have a fast computer to run it on. But RS can be run for free and pretty much from any computer.

- Parents will often reward kids for good behavior (doing chores etc), and even if kids go for members, it's much easier for kids to get monthly $5 than a lump sum of $60 for a video game from a store.

- Since parents see RS as G-rated and more kid-friendly than most other MMORPG's, they think it's good for their child. Parents can be as selfish as their kids - all they care is that their kid isn't negatively affected, they don't care at all about the negative effect their kid can impose on other people. With such parents, no wonder we see such children. After all, they had such a good role model to follow!

Now, I am not a snob that says kids should not play RS. As I said, most bad behavior we see by kids in RS is not their fault, it's the fault of their parents who fail to see what their kid is up to, fail to go the extra mile of spending time with their kid to see how they play, and guiding them as their go along. Younger kids should play RS together with their parents or older friends, where they can actually learn about proper interaction with the community instead of learning nothing and making everyone else mad at the same time.

--

But I'm glad to say that *occasionally* you see quite intelligent people playing RS. A good place to find them is certain forums, tip.it being one of them.

I'd like to think I myself am somewhat intelligent (or at least not a total moron), being a second year comp. sci. student with 4.0GPA. I won't say my "IQ", because the IQ results you get online are a total piece of BS which say nothing about you (except perhaps the size of your ego)

Live free or die. First option is exhausted, so guess what remains?

^^^^ That was one of the best thing I've read about children and RS in a while. But you missed one thing, it's not only the selfish parent who makes it so bad. It's also the ignorant one. Parents who just don't know what their children are doing on the internet. Parents who think there can be nothing wrong with a game, and there are parents who don't know anything about the internet. There are lots of parents who doesn't have a perfect opinion about the internet. That is because there is no "good" opinion about the internet. Some parents will declare our parents crazy because we are allowed to sit on the computer whole day. (Don't say things against the last statement, there are tons of teens who are doing that.)

I doubt there is anyone to blame about the immaturity in Rs. But I've found something which helps (for most children who are older then 13). Ask why they insulted the other one, why they use such horrible English, etc. and just say they appear very immature to you. Teens don't like that and will either start a huge flame war, or start to think about their behaviour.

When everything's been said and done, more has been said than done.

All skills 80+

Well both intelligent and less intelligent people play runescape. There is a difference in how you experience the game, more intelligent players will try to do something as efficient as possible and will succeed in it because they got more insight (in the game) because they look things up e.g. here on tip.it.

For example: me and someone else that I knew have played rs for roughly the same time. I'm not going to call him dumb but he has some learning problems and has a real hard time at (a technical) school.

I have got 30M+ total xp and 40M+ gp, he isn't ranked in any skill in the highscores.

He is still asking me where varrock is or where he is standing ingame, he just doens't seem to learn anything....

I have a PhD in biology and work as a researcher. I mainly play because it is relaxing (well, sometimes it isn't, but mostly it is).

I get scammed, I die, I'm not very rich, i do lots of stupid things etc. I merely try to play in a way that entertains me.

I like to 'crude' graphics. reminds me of the old days in gaming (obviously I am also not that young). I like the fact that it is cheap. I like the fact I can play it anywhere I want. I like it that I can play the game alone if I want to and do things with other people if I feel like it.

Jagex wasn't stupid.

Real life sucks compared to RS. I mean, you can kill other people and not get in trouble for it!

But, actually, I see a lot more stupid people play RS the smart people. IMO.

I have all the 99s, and have been playing since 2001. Comped 4/30/15

Maybe it's just the people on the forums and in clans that are smarter. Also, when I became a member, I noticed a great increase in the maturety* of the population.
