I have a theory, people don't like to use the search button because they do not know how to use it well. Usually after a first experience they return a couple thousand pages of crap and give up and move on.

 

 

 

So if someone wrote a search button guide for tip.it then all the Mods can just link to there when they close a redundancy.

I think the "search guide" should be in forums as a sticky somewhere instead of the main site, as it's pretty much more forum related than main site related :P

I'm willing to bet there's a lot of people who'll know more tricks, but we'll see what you come up with first ;)

It's up to the forum gods what happens with this, but if you DID write a guide, can you please address the opposite problem?

 

 

 

People put in terms that are too generic get a return of "nothing" because there are too many topics/posts (it refuses to bring you thousands, as far as I know?) Then they come here and say the search tool is broken.

 

 

 

So if you'd like to address that as well, I'd like to see it. But keep in mind I have no say what happens to a guide to using the forums. ;)

I think it would be way too hard to address the searching functions of the search feature because there would be far too many people coming up with blanks, as portrayed in this situation:

BTW, there IS a Forum User Guide on the main site. So how about a "Search Tips" sticky that would simply point to the guide? You would need to beef up the Searching section of the Forum User Guide first though. It could use some more info. And now that I think of it, the guide probably needs complete update anyway, and this would be the perfect opportunity to bring it up to date and advertise its existence.

Okay, on topic,

 

At the moment, I am in the process of a updated sticky that is similar to the one you pointed out. It is not full done, but is almost done, and written entirely by me. It can be found here... New Sticky

An entire guide about searching isn't need IMO. People just need to be reminded to keep their searches specific, and that "Nothing matches found"(or whatever it is) also means that there were too many results.

I'll just add that in there on the bottom when my sticky is totally complete. That way, there will be a tiny section on the search button, but not too much so that it is overwhelming, or unneeded.

I think devoted holds the answer again. I'd like to see it in his sticky he's making, and I'd also like to see the guide by itself in many other places, like the sticky Kiara posted, and in General-In General I mean its own sticky, not typed up into a sticky already there.
