Is the money cap really 2.47 billion coins?

Featured Replies

I'm just wondering because Java can support a "long" variable that can hold something like a number past one quintillion. Could Jagex have made the money cap on purpose for programmatical reasons or is it just an anomoly of the way RuneScape is? Or, is it a complete myth and maybe no one really knows what it is? Thanks.

EDIT: Did I say double? I meant long variable type.

yes, it's 2.47b

not that i dont trust you, but how has this been discovered? is there any documents from Jagex or has somebody actually reached the cap and taken screenshots of it?

People have reached the cap and screened it. Also, I believe the max is 2,147,483,648gp.

The cap comes from Jagex only assigning 31 bits for the "amount" of an item. Because you must also count zero, the cap would be: 2^31-1gp=2,147,483,647

This signature is intentionally left blank.

However, it could be double that plus one if jagex changed to an unsigned integer. However, the only item that could come close to that cap would be gp, and maybe something random like fire runes. (Or Cabbage, if the OOC tried to...)

The ooc has been around 3 years and only has about 3m cabbages. At the current rate they will find out the answer... in a couple of millenia.

The OOC already has 3m cabagges? =D> I never thought they'd get more than 100k...

I would like to make minor correction. Long is 32 bit data type, but since it also supports negative numbers, usable range is 2^31-1. Dolomite to prove this you don't need any documents from Jagex because they use same computers as we do. They are all the same

I dont see what the big deal is, but if you want to end speculation, dont they have private server thingys?

I saw a video one time of "zezima" in an empty bank with like 400phats. you can do remote/private server things right? set that up, and then give yourself a ton of money...

problem solved.

Ive heard other questions too, specifically - what happens when you reach the cap? would it roll over? would it just stay at the cap? will it start a new pile?

Hop on a private server and find out. (or merch for 3-4 years)

yes im pretty sure ive seen screen shots of it on google

I know Jagex can set the money cap if they need to set one, but if they didn't set one, then why leave it sit at a value as low as two billion? (That's relatively low for a long variable.) If they don't have a reason to set one, they might as well make it a long variable and have the money cap be 100 times the expected money cap.

And yes, there are private servers, but they break all kinds of laws and give you viruses. Don't use them!:shame::shame::shame:

They set the cap to 2billions to save server space, it's that simple. Every single item you own in your bank has a number of variables attached to it :

Object id

Object position

Object count

There could be more of course but I guess the code can figure the rest out.

Now this means that for every single stash of item owned by a player ingame they have to free the space needed by w/e is 2^31-1.

2000 players at a same time, especially on member worlds. Well that's alot of items to keep count of. And yet this is just a part of what the server has to hold. Now if they were to double the item cap, they would have to double the size of their servers!! and honestly I dont see how this possibly can be called low. I'm pretty sure there are less than 100 players out there that own more then the money cap, and they can easilly store that cash in item form.

So not only is there absolutely no need to augment the cap for 100 players, it would be totally useless and cost them heaps of money.. As well as lag the game

edit : the cap x100?? Lmao then this mean each server would need to be 100 time bigger!! Besides nobody had ever owned over 10 bill from player memory.

Quest cape obtained at combat level 83, march 07.
