usually its just custom made typography (fancy font)

usually drawn and then finalized.

I'm pretty sure they'd employ a design agency to do it for them.

Dont they draw it on paper or something first?

I guess a lot of designing is done first, lots of different ideas.

Thats what we did:

He actually hand drew it, then they scan it onto the computer and use some editing program to smooth it out and make it look pretty.

Metal fans, check out my band!

Depends about the band. Some bands just grab a cool looking font and do it that way, some first draw it to paper and then idealise it until it looks perfect in their eyes and some people hire other people to do it.

Here's a link you could also check. It's on Estonian forums but fully english.

I'd rather die for what I believe in than live for anything else.

They should stop using those fonts. I can never read the band names. Besides, what's the point of it. :P

True, it does give things are more 'authentic' feeling. :) It would look less impressive if they would have their name in a standard Timesnewroman font.

Cool man, I really like it! The boney look seems fitting! And I really like the form of the letter T in metal. It looks a bit like a bat. Which is dark of course, nice touch there. The 4 does look a bit weird though. Good for starters! But keep it up, practice makes perfect, at least that's what they say!

Yea, sometimes you just got to take a break from it or it becomes so frustrating, and frustration doesn't always make great work. I sometimes have it when playing a video game, when I'm stuck in a dungeon on pok̮̩̉̉mon or something, then you just keep looking for that certain stair for hours but you just over-look it. When you take a little break you'll find it pretty quick later, same goes with your logo. It takes time and a lot of patience. Next time it might by smart if you just keep practicing that 4 on a different peace of paper till you perfected it and then you integrate it in the logo to make it complete.

Well, you can always experiment of course. Other than a bit of paper you haven't got much to lose, only to gain. :)

Some hire people, others do it themselves. Steve Harris drew up the Iron Maiden font, and I think the dude from Death did the logo for his band as well.
