Are all essential albums. I'm not known with the early stuff yet (From Her To Eternity excluded), but I guess that'll be not too bad either plus it's somewhat rougher, since he changed more to ballads (not your usual "baby, I love you so, I need you so" though) since The Good Son. Boatman's Call and Abattoir Blues are most easy to get into. Boatman all ballads, and abattoir blues is very diverse.

Or you could try Oasis, they are absolutely awesome :thumbsup:

Muse, Radiohead, the White Stripes, Placebo.. I don't know, I don't listen to too much alternative rock, mostly indie (if you want different types of rock aside form alternative, I can help you out).

Oh, and why dont you just listen to the radio or something, because you'll probably hear something on there that you like, then you can just find the name of the band, and hey presto!

anberlin is not indie...they just signed with Universal...now Switchfoot...they just went indie. Have you looked into classic rock? That kicks indie upside the head.
