runescapeloser22
My Norton Anti-Virus was acting weird, and wouldn't let me do any virus scans/update my virus definitions, so I got Ad-Aware 2007 off download.com to do a scan, and I found this: That seriously, can't be good AT ALL. I have no idea how this happened, the only things I've downloaded recently is an album OFF ITUNES and Ad-Aware just a few minutes ago  :ohnoes: :ohnoes: :ohnoes: HELP? leebrave
Most will be cookies and low lvl non risky adware items Gorak Chronicles Ended, thinking of something new for next week
runescapeloser22
Still... even if say, 1650 of them are those things, thats still 50 high risk things :-X
runescapeloser22
Ok, just stopped the scan because it didn't find anything else in 10+ minutes. Here's what it shows: You were right, it was all cookies  the Malware is adware right? and I should delete it all I'm guessing (except cookies)
McGuff1
Is this the first time you've used Ad-Aware or any other spyware detector? If so that could explain it. I run Ad-Aware daily and the most I've ever seen is maybe 7 tracking cookies.
leebrave
Yeh and you could prob delete most cookies except ones to websites you visit regularly like this one Gorak Chronicles Ended, thinking of something new for next week
runescapeloser22
This is the first time I've used Ad-Aware, but otherwise I do a full system scan with Norton Anti-Virus about every 6-7 days. Today Norton wasn't responding so I used Ad-Aware (which I'm going to keep using, scans don't make me lag as much as Norton :P ) I deleted all the Critical Objects, but any advice on what I do with the Cookies? EDIT: what ARE cookies?

The ones flagged by Adaware will generally be tracking cookies from advertising networks, which track what websites with their adverts you have been on. So you may as well delete them. there are no stupid questions just way too many inquisitive idiots balance is scary to people who like things easy for them
leebrave
They basically save login information so that you dont have to keep doing it. Like here on these forums - if you delete that cookie it will ask you to login with name and password, the cookie saves the hassle of doing that all the time Gorak Chronicles Ended, thinking of something new for next week

I run it daily when I boot up. Cookies are usually harmless. I believe tip.it probably uses them to store your password so you don't have to log in every time you want to browse the forums. Don't delete the cookies but every thing else Ad_Aware tells you to.
leebrave
I would install spybot search and destroy - its free and good Gorak Chronicles Ended, thinking of something new for next week

blade995
FYI never stop the scan even if it does not find anything for a while. Let it finish. Ad-aware (and others) may find more spyware at the last minute.
Hobgoblin11
Any thoughts as to what is the best Firewall software around at the moment (free)? I'm sing Zonealarm, but Im not convinced at how good it is anymore, a lot of things seem to slip through it, and it restricts my internet access severely from time to time, for no apparent reason. Is there anything better out there I should be using instead? 99/99 Fletching, 99/99 Cooking, 96/99 Strength

Is there anything better out there I should be using instead? I have not found a good free firewall in a long time. Sygate was very good for free but then systematic bought it and it's no longer free. I use to use Zonealarm but I too found it very restrictive. I do not use a software firewall anymore. I only use a hardware firewall from my router. I don't recommend this to the average user for obvious reasons.

D. V. Devnull
runescapeloser22, kill anything Ad-Aware thinks is bad with a TAI of 4 or higher, and be careful and look through anything with a TAI of 3 or less. Anything you need or want, keep those, and kill the rest. And BTW, if you find that some app you were using won't run later, it was due to something that needed to be killed with a TAI of 4 or higher. This also means the associated application should never have been installed at all and you will want to rid yourself of it. (I'm glad I arrived with my knowledge of how to handle that... problem solved now, I hope.) Hobgoblin11 and blade995, as for your software firewall problems, you should both get ZoneAlarm Pro 6.5 or later. And do take the time to read the help, it does point out what you want and need to know about how to configure that thing so it doesn't misbehave. 8-) ... (As a case example, I learned very quickly with an earlier version when I wanted to torrent some fansub episodes of Naruto via ̢̮â¬Å¡ÃâõTorrent. But enough about that, since it is more or less trivial to mention upon this discussion.) 3 people, 2 problem types, 1 post to handle it all. : ~Mr. D. V. Hobgoblin11
I know how to set the permissions for each program, if thats what you mean - it aint that difficult!! Also, wouldn't Pro indicate non-free? 99/99 Fletching, 99/99 Cooking, 96/99 Strength

Also, wouldn't Pro indicate non-free? That is true, I will admit. However, you will find it worth the cash to buy ZA Pro in the more recent versions, because of the finer levels of control the program provides over the free counterpart. Sure, use the free version if you wish, you just won't have the extra-fine-grain control that I've grown to like. :) And BTW, I've used the free version, NEVER have had a problem with it. In fact, it has saved the life of the PCs I have used a few times! (Still remembers one night at 2 am in the morning where the firewall had shrugged off over 1100 hits within a 2-hour time period.) ~Mr. Devnull and normally with a cool mind.(Warning: This user can be VERY confusing to some people... Nadril
Just chipping in but having that many finds for a first time running a program isn't a big deal. I remember the first time running spybot search and destroy on my old machine, I got a ton of hits and none of them were really bad.
Hobgoblin11
Yep, I ran spybot on my sisters PC last weekend as she wasn't sorting her own security out. It kicked out 1950 hits, 1660 of which were from just one entry... 99/99 Fletching, 99/99 Cooking, 96/99 Strength

Just saying that its not really uncommon.
