darkmage099
Recently, I have noticed a lot of extremely ridiculous and stupid topics regarding news that no one cares about. For example, "man dies because an armless man headbutts him, man dies because alligator bit him". NO one cares. It doesn't affect us and it is a waste of space. I suggest we make a sticky for these trivial threads just like we did for youtube. I understand if it's something major like elections, death of someone famous (discussion), or anything of that sort. However, the death of an average Joe, no matter how ridiculous it was, should NOT be in OT. Trix.--quit WoW as of 12/07Thank you 4be2jue for the wonderful sig and avatar! InkofDeath
Some of them are annoying, not all. The headbutt one is stupid, and shouldn't even be there, though the one with the politician sueing god does have a higher point then what most people are looking at, adam said 'this just proves the frivolty of the system', or some kind of sentence like that, which is the main point in that topic. Yes, some are annoying, but not all of them are, just to point that out. ---- Just report it if its completely idiotic, and most of the users don't want it there, as what happened with the headbutting one. It's like the youtube ones. If the whole topic is an example = fail. If the topic has a greater meaning, then the example should not be the focal point. Adam007
It's rare that we get so many of those at once, and not worth making yet another containment sticky. With these each one normally does lead to discussion, and stickies limit the kind of discussion you could have if each person is randomly posting different links of different news stories all the time. Just because certain news stories don't interest you, doesn't mean they don't interest someone else. Granted a really stupid one does come up every so often, there's no use making a sticky and limiting the type of discussion we could otherwise have. tripsis
I think there is a significant difference between the YouTube sticky and this hypothetical News sticky. There are hundreds/thousands/millions of videos out there, each of which someone might find funny, important or interesting in some way. But a whole thread dedicated to a video is seemingly pointless. Imagine a thread like so: "Wow I found this hilarious video today: " What discussion would take place? "Yeah, that's funny." "haha." Then that's the end? Whereas a news thread can create a discussion, because there is more discussion content in news articles than YouTube videos, which usually just contain something amusing. Again, this is not the true in all cases (YouTube videos are not always funny movies with no dicussion and news articles are not always informative and can generate a discussion). But this is my interpretation of it. I guess what I'm trying to say, is would you rather have 10 threads, each with a link to a YouTube video and maybe a small sentence saying, "Omg watch this." Or ten threads, each containing a quote from an article, describing a real event that happened somewhere in the world. Personally, I would pick the latter. - 99 fletching | 99 thieving | 99 construction | 99 herblore | 99 smithing | 99 woodcutting - - 99 runecrafting - 99 prayer - 125 combat - 95 farming - - Blog - DeviantART - Book Reviews & Blog

D. V. Devnull
Regarding the Topic, why not just create an area purely for News Events? :-s And now for a quote pulled semi-out-of-context... Some of them, if not most of them, do create discussion. <*pulls out an intent on humor*> And they sometimes lead to a "verbal person killing fest". darkmage099
This is why I don't start topics. Neither do I. Okay if we dont make a sticky, then let's lock 'em. I'm serious. Some guy died because he got hit by an armless dude? So what? This in no way affects my regular life. Trix.--quit WoW as of 12/07Thank you 4be2jue for the wonderful sig and avatar! pokemama
The purpose of Off Topic is for ALL forum users to post things that are not about RS. I really wish that the OT regulars would be less annoyed when other users post. It's not a private forum, and it's not a debate forum - it's for everyone. I wish they would give OT a debate forum so that the "serious" threads that the regulars prefer would have their own place. Then EVERYONE ELSE who uses Tip.It forums would also have a place they can post Off-Topic items without being flamed to death. it's a lot easier to get over yourself when you look at intelligence the same way you look at beauty, or height, or eye color: being smart is easy, but being good is hard ... being smart is handed to you, being good is handed to *nobody*. hellbellz
Pokemama, it's cool when there's a news article once every 3 days. But not when it's once a day by the same person. :|

Some guy died because he got hit by an armless dude? So what? This in no way affects my regular life. Nobody is obliging you to read them and post, you could always ignore the threads you aren't interested in. They aren't harming you, and some do create discussions, so why should they all be locked? Some of there are blatant spam, but that happens with all kinds of posts, not only with news posts. Just my opinion. This signature is intentionally left blank. misterxman
Subforum would be a bad idea, what's to stop people from posting news every day? They'd fill up and would not give time for good replies or discussion. It'd be a bad place to read news, there's plenty of websites made just for news. Imo the best way is to let people continue posting news in OT, but they must include their own starting opinion/discussion in their post. Also, right now it seems us mods have been pretty liberal about letting any news stay opened, but we could lock if they begin spam or judge if the news did have to be posted or not. That's pretty much my opinion on the subject. I'm fine with news threads as long as some effort has been put into making them. Thanks Venomai for this super sig and Kwimbob for the awesome avatar!
