Modern Horror - is it crap?

I usually find horrors stupid and unrealistic. The shear lack of reality makes the movies so unbearably stupid that you do not get scared.

That being said, I LOVED Disturbia. That was by far one of the best horror movies I have ever seen. Granted, it wasn't a "look behind you and youll die" horrors, but it had a very well drawn out plot with SOME sense of reality.

Thats because it was a rip-off of Rear Window by Alfred Hithcock, so is not a recent horror movie. Cannot be used in discussion.

Who cares? Alfred Hitchcock didn't make a movie out of it. If this discussion included books, you would be correct.

I think that it has to do with the desensitizing of Americans. Back when "The Exorcist" came out, it was ultra shocking and scared most people. My dad saw it in theaters and he tells me about how people would leave the theater crying, screaming, passing out, or even praying to God because they thought the movie would posses them.

But now that isn't all that much. We have GTA games, Manhunt, countless violent movies, and other sources of entertainment. That plus the lack of originality has really hurt todays movies.

My Recomendations for Scary Movies:

House (1986)- still makes me scared today, a forgot gem.

28 Days Later (2002)

28 Weeks Later

Frailty (2001)- Not really scary, but a very exciting and touching film.

The Mothman Prophecys (2002)- Based on true events

Rosemary's Baby (1968)- Not as shocking as it was in 1968, but its still a creepy film

House on Haunted Hill (1959)

The Haunting (1963)

The Changeling (1980)

Kansen "Infection" (2004) A uniquely well done Japanese horror movie

The Exorcist (1973)- Not to be cliqued, but it still gets some scares (not really from me) and is worthy of a spot

I will be adding more eventually

Sig

Alfred Hitchcock is a film director, Tryto isn't talking about a book. Rear Window is a film starring James Stewart (he's an actor by the way). It's about "a wheelchair bound photographer spies on his neighbours from his apartment window and becomes convinced one of them has committed murder." Does that plot in anyway seem similar? Thought so.

Next time don't try to be smart when you don't have the feintest clue about what you're talking about clever clogs.

How about you stop trying to be such a 1337est? Just because a movie is based on another, doesn't mean it can't be used in a discussion ABOUT movies. They have different scenes, and if you hadn't noticed, it's not an actual remake of Rear Window. Pfft, "not a recent horror movie. Cannot be used in discussion", that really is one of the dumbest things i've ever heard. And seriously, not a recent horror movie? It's not of the same name, and I'm pretty sure Disturbia was filmed fairly recently...

It's a good horror movie. The thread is about horror movies. That should be enough I think.

EDIT: I know that every fan of South Park knows who Alfred Hitchcock is, and what he did, but I'm not sure that ever fan knows of Rear Window. Might want to check on that.

Yeah, stop trying to be smart when you cant even spell faintest (and neighbors). Good job on being rude, jerk.

There's also a book writer named Alfred Hitchcock. I assumed it was him. Please forgive me for not knowing every single horror movie out there.

Even if the plot isn't "z0mg or1iginal!", it doesn't make it a bad movie.

Speaking of crap horror movies, a friend inflicted one on me last night.

The Breed. It's about a bunch of rabid german shepards, slavering at the mouth, barking a lot and generally biting stuff. Boring and not in the least tiny bit scary.

About as scary as Barney the purple dinosaur and about as much suspense as an episode of Big Brother... utter crap basically.

Right for a start, Alfred Hitchcock is a rather well known director so it's not like I'm making a big deal about some random obscure film maker. Secondly I only pointed it out because you went out of your way to put somebody down when they made a valid point, on top of that the put down in response to that was completely false.

I didn't say Disturbia was a bad film, my point is (and I think it was Tryto's also) that it is a remake which sticks close to the original so it's not indicative of modern horror films - it is a re-telling of a much older style film and therefore not really a valid example of a modern horror film.

Also I didn't spell "neighbor" wrong, in proper (ie. non-American) English "neighbor" has a U in it, hence neighbour. Don't start on me because your nation ruined the English language. On that not I used the word feint (as in to feint - a deceptive action) in the wrong context.

Now please can I stop "being a jerk" and stay on topic?

it depends wot u define as being modern horror eg. slither which was funny and not wot id call a horror. the best horror films have to be the older ones like hellraiser, nightmare on elm street and the friday 13th series. these are geniune horror films and even watching them now still give me goosebumps

I wonder though. What do you consider to be good horror movie. What are you comparing the modern horror movie with? I hear somebody say "The oldies such as Alien, Shining, Silence of the Lambs". Yes, those are three classics. But I could easilly put at least 10 good horror productions, made in the last 12 years (that is also the period between Alien and Silence of the Lambs).

Of course, Hollywood isn't going trough the most creative period at the moment. But there still is a lot of good material, and there's more than Hollywood. There are excellent horror movies made in Japan, and even in Europe there is a lot of good material. What do you think of movies such as Haute Tension, The Hills Have Eyes (remake) the Descent, Dog Soldiers, Wolfcreek, 28 Days Later. That's all very good Euro (and one Australian) horror made in the last five years.

Um, I wanted to cry in An American Haunting I was so flipping scared. And my brother wouldn't let me leave the cinema. I can't stand any horror films, bar maybe the gore ones, which I still don't actually watch, considering i close my eyes.

I haven't watched any for ages. I get nightmares.

Maybe it's a coincidence but....

Has anyone noticed that there's a LOT of "horror" movies Rated 15 now? I mean, if it's suitable for a 15 year old... then it can't be that scary lol.

I think the age certificate goes a long way to indicating if a movie with be scary or not. Of course, there are some exceptions (Silent Hill springs to mind)

Torture movies-Driven into the ground

Zombie movies-Killed and dead

Vampire movies-Not many recently, maybe that'll be what people turn into the next cliche?

Suspense-horror movies-Dryed up

Imo, the only good horror movies are:

-Night of the Living Dead (The original, in black&white, it is The. Best. Horror. Movie. Ever.

-Shaun of the Dead (Comedy, not horror, but amazingly funny..)

-And maybe the first Wolfman movie...

Maybe I forgot one or two, but please, enough with the horror, just give me some [bleep]ing sci-fi or comedy all you moviemakers...sheesh. :x

There is no meaning or truth in life but that which we create for ourselves.
