My computer is extremely slow

Recommended Posts

And its new. HP Pavilion a1710n, AMD 64 duual 2.2ghz processor, 1gb ram, windows xp sp 2. Its about two and a half weeks old now. And it loads forever

Take for example an hour ago. I start up my computer, go on firefox, load a site, and firefox crashes for some reason. I ctrl-alt-del for task manager, and end task it. On my older (7yr old computer) it'd close really fast. Instead, i end task it and come back to it twenty minutes later to the same screen, firefox still not closed. I end task again, come back 10 min later. Same result. I pull out the plug

Or a few minutes ago. I run msconfig, it took ~8 minutes for it to start up. Between the time i started up and the time it finished, i couldn't do anything because it was busy loading (the whole 8 minutes i could hear my computer loading). Runescape, too, was extremely laggy, even though there were no other programs running.

I have tried to fix the problem myself. Spyware, no. Viruses, no. My sister got from her friend uniblue's SpeedUpMyPc and lent it to me a short while ago. Just like msconfig, it takes about 8 minutes to start up. And it does not help. I look up every process running when its slow and they're all normal.

But something i noticed is that, when its loading a LOT, task manager tells me that system idle process takes up, still, 90% of cpu. Why does my computer allot the 90% whenever i need it for something else?

At this point im totally clueless. Sometimes my computer starts up without recognizing that my mouse or keyboard are both associated with logitech and so the extra buttons/back buttons on my keyboard/mouse do not work and i am forced to restart my computer as a result

Heres a hijackthis log (loading it, too, took forever)

I'm not exactly sure, but if I can give suggestions, check and see if anything is running in the background. For example...SOMEHOW, my friend ended up having 2 antiviruses running at once in the background. He noticed slower performance. He disabled one, now he's fine. Do you have a lot of extra things running in the background..such as IM programs or antiviruses?

The system idle process does exactly the opposite of what you think it does. The idle process does not use that much cpu, it basically shows you how much is available. For instance if the idle process is using 90% then you have 90% of your available cpu resources and your computer is currently using the other 10%.

I sometimes run aim; however it does not run at startup, and i've exited out to see if it was the source of the problem, which it is not

I know how it works; Its that the 90% is available and the other 10% is used on windows task manager all the while 0% is used on running whatever program im running thats taking 8 minutes to load

hmm...

Just taking a glance at your Hi jack this log I can't see anything too suspicious. However that doesn't rule anything out, I may have overlooked something.

Slow load times at first make me think it might be a hard drive problem, but than you mentioned runescape was also laggy -- that doesn't make much sense.

I can tell you the problem - you're using Windows.

Go to Task Manager and see if there's any memory-intensive programs running. That's about all I can tell you... otherwise back up everything and try system recovery.

EDIT: Have you restarted your computer since Firefox crashed? Could be a memory leak or something. If not, restart it to see it that helps.

I'm no expert, but I don't even see an AntiVirus Program running, unless it is one built into ZoneAlarm, as per something like that "avsys" entry. :-s (Looks like I may be able to learn a little here?)

I wonder, though, if stan18's system has been hit by something that ZA's built-in AV can't pick up due to some kind of 'rootkit-variety ability' in the virus itself.

All I can recommend is to download Eset's NOD32 from http://www.eset.com (Trial version provides updates for 30 days, paid license required after to continue updating, actual antivirus services don't shut down after 30 days) and disable ZA's antivirus and mailsafe temporarily as they will interfere, and give NOD32 a chance to sniff out the problem, and if there is anything really nasty then NOD32 will stop it. BTW, I am recommending this one because I use it myself, and it provides better protection than either Norton or McAfee or any other that I know of or have used, even at install time. (Just an example, NOD32 caught 200 viruses still in existence in someone-else-I-know's spam quarantine that Norton never stopped. Also, NOD32 has stopped totally new viruses while I've been surfing the web.)

stan18, good luck on getting your computer repaired.

have you tried calling the manufactuer or who ever is on the toll free tech support you should have with a new computer? I would consider the possibility that their was some problem with the manufacturing. for instance the ram could be flawed or may of been exposed to electrostatic disscharge. if you have a warenty I would advise you to call them.

I doubt it, I think you said you scanned, but you may have a bunch of adware/spyware. I scanned my old 98 last night...it's running quite a bit faster now. I'd recommend a scan.

I can tell you the problem - you're using Windows.

Lol, good point :)

He has already stated he's looked at the task manager, that isn't the problem. I'm 99% sure its a hardware issue of some sort, unless there was some virus he overlooked.

Download a dedicated Antivirus program first, run it. If nothing is found use trial and error to figure out the problem.

Using Task Manager, keep shutting down non-system processes until it brings the computer back up to speed. Actually just close every single process one by one... Only one you need that I can think of is Explorer[Caution: Executable File].

Better yet, get another hardrive and install a fresh copy of Windows on it (Or any OS for that matter). If it still runs slow you know it's a hardware problem. If it speeds up you know it's either the original hardrive or a software problem.

This could be the old Windows update problem, Try turning off Windows updates and see if this has an effect.

Apparently sometimes Win updated screws up and SVCHOST goes into a loop taking up to 99% of your CPU. It will eventually give up but it takes over 5 mins sometimes. You might see this in the Task Manager, click Processes and click CPU to view what is taking up CPU time. If you see SVCHOST taking up an alarming amount of CPU time, it's windows update.

If you find this is the problem, there is a patch available and I have written a batch file that clears up some of the temp files related to this issue. Let me know if you would like these files.

One thing that I find is that WindowBlinds clashes witha LOT of things.

I found using WindowBlinds with:-

Need for Speed Carbon prevents NFS for saving properly, and makes it lag.

Panda Anti-Virus totally screwed my PC up, spends hours booting properly, most programs won't run Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Delete) won't come up etc. Couldn't uninstall anything so I had to do a clean installation of my OS again.

I suggest you chesck on the web for any know compatability issues between your programs particularly WindowBlinds. If that doesn't work look for a program that scans for registry issues (even if this doesn't solve you problem it can radicaly speed up your PC)

Don't even mention Panda antivirus, I'm not going to say the word that springs to mind as I am too much of a lady.

I came across Panda (Once again) two days ago, the user had Panda installed but the licence had run out, so Panda decided to block port 80 preventing her from surfing the web. She didn't even want Panda anyway as she did not know what it was or how it got onto her system. But that's besides the point!

Addition:

Best free antivirus is Avast. Never use more than one antiviral software at the same time as they tend to clash and give you terrible system overheads.

And for spyware detection and removal I would install all the of the following: Defender, Ad-Aware and Spybot.

Ok its not a virus problem, kaspersky, NOD32, and zonealarm say no

Ad-aware says its not a spyware problem

I've actually already done the task manager remove-everything-you-can and used runescape as my point of reference; it was laggy after i took out everything i could

At this point I'm going to try over the weekend what someone else on this thread said; i have an old (but still good) 200gb harddrive that i'll reinstall windows with

But i also think it might be my computer fan; it might be too weak since i usually leave my comp on 24/7

I'll check on the weekend...

stan18, I've got to ask at this point... WHO IS YOUR ISP??? ... I wonder if they're causing you lag with RuneScape. :-k

Also, now that I'm noticing it, you're on XP SP2 with an HP and only 1 GB of RAM? Hmm... :-k ... We may have been barking up the wrong tree, so-to-speak. See if you can get a RAM upgrade to 2GB. If that doesn't help, then see about reloading with only XP SP1. There could be a serious driver conflict going on between XP SP2 and the drivers needed for the HP system itself. :(

BTW, Clare, I know you're gonna rant at me for suggesting XP SP1. Please don't. I'm just trying to cover all the bases, and I've heard XP SP2 can cause serious problems sometimes.

I see no reson why windows xp with service pack 2 should be an issue with 1 gig of ram. my computer which I have had for at least 6 years runs on 384 megs of ram, and I have service pack two installed.

I'm not clare but I'm going to rant at you (again). 1GB of ram is more than enough for XP SP2. XP SP2 should not use anymore ram than SP1.

Do not give bad advice. You preach about knowing tons about computer security (in numerous other threads) then suggest SP1? That will make his computer vulnerable to 100s of security exploits and probably make his computer slower because of all the preventable viruses he will get. Plus Microsoft does not support XP SP1 anymore, only SP2.

XP SP 2 Runs fine on 1 GB Ram. I even hear t runs acceptable at 256 MB RAM. Heck, I have 448 MB RAM and It's running smooth.

I REALLY don't suggest the downgrade to SP 1. Yes, it's still Windows..so it's still vulnerable unless you have and know how to use the right software...but Downgrading to SP1 at this point is about like posting an ad on the internet saying 'I have no security on my computer...gimmee your worst'.

It's not a RAM issue.

I should have seen the rants coming... alright, scratching the RAM upgrade or an OS downgrade and tighter security operations, my primary question to stan18 still stands... "Who is stan18's ISP???" :-s
