Balance is the way to go (no, not Guthix!), I'd rather have higher def and att than str... So I use whip from now on, if I even will train combat, and fight with controlled. The occasional few damage extra that you can do with D long doesnt outweigh the speed of a sicmitar, and neither does the few points of extra accuracy. However, specwise (meaning, that your fight is only lasting a short time) id go with a d long. On F2P would you choose a rune long over a rune scimmy I think not, same goes for P2P D long and scimmy. D Scimmy for the win.
