~ Gold Fish Help ~ For People Who know About Fish!:P

Featured Replies

Hello,

Well I have had a long experience with Fish, particulary gold fish. When we first came to Canada my mother bought 12 fish, put it in a tiny bowl, which was pretty tiny. The fish were all crowded and everytime some died. 1st week about 6 died. 2nd week 4 died. 1 month later 1 died. Then their was one, the 1 that ate all the other ones:p.

That evenntaully lived for 4 years, until their was an overnight LEAK in the tank and then it died:(.

Then it was the year of about 1999, we bought another fish. We put it in a bowl to start out and it lived till May 2007, it was a long experince:).

Anyways, we finally decided to buy fish.

We have an aquarium, medium size. Mom just bought 2 gold fish. They seem pretty rapid, she wants to " keep the top opened " so they get some oxygen lol for a couple days..im like w/e .. the tank is about 2/3 full. Now im wondering if i put like the aquirum top on will it affect their breathing at all? The top does have some holes, which arent to big but some holes...is it safe to have the top on WITHOUT an oxygen generator in the tank?

- I do have 1 but i think it like is to strong for the fish but any opinions, ideas, or anything that i should fix about making these fish live?:P

Thanks!

They're fish. Use your brain.

Ah, this reminds me about the noob on the Runescape forums who was upset with the quest "Cold War" because apparently his grandparents died in the war. :wall:

My advice is to leave the "top" on or they will end up jumping out of the tank and if you go on vacation you will find them both on the floor covered in ants.

He's right, if the fish jump out of the tank at night, no one will be there to get them. As said before, they're fish, they don't need you to put air in the tank. Most people do it anyway but it's not really needed. Taking the top off the tank will just make their water get dirty faster and allow them to jump out; nothing good. That being said, if I were you, I'd just use the oxygen generator that you have, it can't really be "too strong" for the fish. As long as they have a heater and a good filter, they'll probably be fine. You can feed them 1-3 times a day, really up to you. Be careful not to feed them too much though. Change the filters and water regularly (whenever it's visibly dirty). Make sure to clean the tank too.

If you're wondering, I have 3 fish tanks, so I kinda know a lot about taking care of fish. :P

There are a lot of fish that eat goldfish. Goldfish are the type they use for feeder fish.

@OP: Are you talking about putting the hood/lights on top? If so, yes they are fine. They are made for the fish tank. Although you can leave it off also, if your tank is only 2/3 of the way full they won't jump out.

Um...some things got me curious-how big is your fish tank (litres)...and if you will say, taht you have a fish bowl-i will suggest you to throw it out and get a normal aquarium...anyways

Gold-fish isnt the best thing to keep in aquariums, since it eats plants, and everybody knows that you should have live plants in aquarium, othervise you will have to add a hell lot of chemicals (which is bad) to get a thing called "biological ballance", and about the lid...you should have one, with lamps in it, othervise you cannot grant aquarium proper lightning, and bad/wrong lightning=algae (if you have no idea what it is, its that green/brown "thing" on your aquariums walls, rocks, decorations etc.)...and maybe post a pic of your aquarium...since i think you have a few problems in it...

Just a conclusion- you should have an aquarium lid with lightning, and always keep it on, since fish might jump out :uhh:

My gold fish are doing just fine in an aquarium. "Everybody" is wrong, you don't have to add any extra chemicals to get any sort of balance. I definitely agree there should be lighting, it makes the fish look a lot better. The OP said the tank is only filled about 2/3 of the way, he shouldn't have a problem with fish jumping out.

Don't feed the goldfish applesauce. They will all die. Lol at gay fish. Ive had a few fish. I dont really think they would jump out with a tank 2/3 way full but its hard to say. Just dont feed them applesause.

Hangin loose. Marrentil can die.

A shark :P I wouldn't be suprised...anything on tip. it

I have two red tailed "sharks" in one of my tanks. They aren't really sharks, they are catfish. But they would eat a goldfish if it was small enough.

I did have an oscar in that tank also, which you are supposed to feed goldfish regularly. It was kind of a pain to pick up the feeders though so he just got fish food.

Haha, not quite. It's a barramundi. Currently 30ish cm but can easily get over 1m long. The tank is obviously no where near big enough to properly house such a monster so it's going in a dam when it gets too big. A few more years before it gets near that size, though. Feeding time can get pretty entertaining. Blink and you'll miss it.

For some reason i cant post quotes :ohnoes: , anyways...

Anyways as you can see in this pic everything is re-producted etc., but if you take out plants from it...btw amonia is poisonous for fish. You should get plants...but goldfish would eat em, and that leaves a very bad secound option...chemicals. But i realy dont recomend using them, maybe you can change 1/3 of all aquariums water more often than once a week, and maybe get few applesnails-they will scrub of algae of your aquariums walls.

Use the oxygen generator it's better for the fish.

A friend to all is a friend to none.

Don't have the lid off, if you use spray cans/fly sprays etc they will get sick or die.

You don't need plants in a goldfish tank. You also don't need to add chemicals. Mine are doing just fine without either of those. Anyways the picture says the nitrates are absorbed by algae or reduced by water changes, it doesn't say anything about plants except that the dead fragments start the process.

Yea keep it on, my sister's goldfish jumped out of the bowl during the night and died, we couldn;t find it for about a week  (it fell behind a shelf)

Goldfish = Easy to kill, hard to keep. The only fun part of having goldfish is if you have a cat... If you really want fish, get something thats a little less easy to kill.

Bottom line: just buy a dog... :|
