Use the oxygen generator it's better for the fish.

What he said.

Otherwise the water doesn't absorb much oxygen, and the fish dont live as long.

For some reason i cant post quotes :ohnoes: , anyways...

Anyways as you can see in this pic everything is re-producted etc., but if you take out plants from it...btw amonia is poisonous for fish. You should get plants...but goldfish would eat em, and that leaves a very bad secound option...chemicals. But i realy dont recomend using them, maybe you can change 1/3 of all aquariums water more often than once a week, and maybe get few applesnails-they will scrub of algae of your aquariums walls.

You don't need plants in a goldfish tank. You also don't need to add chemicals. Mine are doing just fine without either of those. Anyways the picture says the nitrates are absorbed by algae or reduced by water changes, it doesn't say anything about plants except that the dead fragments start the process.

1.And what makes you think that? Every aquarium needs plants, but there isn't always a chance to get them, or keep them. A normal tank isnt a 10l bowl with fish and a castle in it. It is just like keep people trapped in toilet.

2.did you see that arrow directing towards a pic of a plant? Look more closley(no offense)

3.I had an 40l square aquarium with 4 fishes(not goldfish-siamese fightfish or somethin like that, i dont know englis name of them), no live plants-just rocks and decorations. Most of time water was green, i had to change it once a week(all of it, yes i know it was stupid), and 2 of my fishes lived for about 2 months. They should have lived about 2 years, and guess why did they die? now i have a 60l aquarium with plants filters etc...water is crystal clear, fish seem happy and everythin looks nice. No chemicals used. Yes chemicals are bad. I admit it. You may think your fish are ok, but most of time thats a lie so...you cant ask them are they ok, can you?

BTW-People, who work at fish stores usualy doesnt know a [cabbage] about fish or aquariums...at least in my country, they just want to sell sell sell

1. I've been saying that tanks don't need plants, because they don't. Neither of my tanks have had plants in them and they are just fine. One is a 10 gallon (38l) and the other is a 55 gallon (208l). My brother in law has 12 tanks, all above 55 gallon (208l) and a few that are 135 gallon (511l). He has never done plants in his either. Those have been going for 20 years now. YOU DON'T NEED PLANTS.

2. The up arrow just means go back to the beginning. It is described with the text to the left of it, about being absorbed by algae or water changes. Plants/Food is the beginning, they just put a picture of a plant there. Yes plants can make the water better, but they can also cause problems too.

3. Then something is screwed up with your water. I have algae on the side of the tanks, but the water is clear. I haven't done a water change in 3 weeks probably. My 10 gallon (38l) tank has 8 goldfish in it, since they are still pretty young. They were born about 2 months ago outside in my 300 gallon (1136l) garden pond. So they even brought all the outside rain water algae in with them and it's still not bad.

Im getting cinda bored of arguing with you-youre cinda making same mistakes, i made with my old tank. My old tank also used to have no plants, but-ok not water, but tank walls were covered in algae, the fish were bored and well it was just cube of water. Tehnicly you can easily use no plants, but not only your tank will look a lot better with plants, it will also have a small eco-system. Oh and i hope all of goldfish in 38l tank are small, since 38l tank is suitable for 1, maybe 2 goldfish. oh and most of nitrates are absorbed by plants...yes they are and you can see it in pic. Anyways if you still dont belive me visit some aquarium related forum...

p.s. you have 208l tank...my god i envy you...

I love my goldfish, but they are dirty destructive fish. My 55 gallon (208l) tank has 3 large goldfish in it (I have pics of them in the post your pet pictures thread) and we have to clean it at least once a month, sometimes more. Young small goldfish generally aren't destructive, but once they've grown a bit you might find the stuff you put in the tank all over the place (including the water filter) or eaten if you put in live plants. So pretty much all we have in our tank is the under-gravel filter with one air tube thing (used to be three but they broke the other two) and two air stones since that's all our goldfish have left undestroyed. Goldfish are actually very simple to take care of if given enough space, clean water and feed regularly (we feed ours once a day). We definitely aren't fish experts and we've managed to have the one fish for 9 years now. Oh, and I recommend a hood/lid for your fish tank. We had one of our goldfish jump out several years ago, but thank goodness our dog freaked out and woke me up and we were able to save him. Although how you take care of your goldfish will also vary on the kind of goldfish you have. My destructive goldfish is a comet, which is your basic feeder goldfish. Your fancy goldfish are going to be far more docile than your comets and you'll be able to have a more decorated tank.

Oh and for those people out there that think fish are boring, I thought that as well until we got our first goldfish 9 years ago. I learned that there's a lot more to them then just swimming, eating and taking a dump. They actually love attention and getting petted just as much as dogs do (waits for comments about me being crazy). I also learned that fish can even die from depression (long story so i won't go into it unless asked).

Oh I have definitely made mistakes, I've only had fish for about 2 years now. I just don't think having plants are that important, mostly because that is what my brother in law says, and he has a lot of fish. One of the first mistakes I made was not keeping track of the water temperature, my heater broke and didn't shut off when it was supposed to. Water got up to 90degrees or so (Fahrenheit) and cooked all the fish. Lost 10 glass catfish, $60 worth.

Oh and the 8 goldfish are just in there temporarily, they are only about 1 inch long so it's not too bad. My outside goldfish had babies, around 30 of which made it. Brought these 8 inside so they wouldn't die during the winter. Hopefully some of the outside ones live also.

@Scorchedrose:

My 55 gallon tank got completely redecorated when I put an oscar in it, it was annoying at first but then it was kind of cool. Much like your problem though I couldn't keep the air hose connected to my drawbridge and Colosseum.

If you only have a small area I recommend a beta fish! They like small areas. Also, change the water in your tank regularly! Put some water conditioner in there too \'

its sure hard to prove you something...especialy if youre not open minded.

anyways il just keep it short for sake of my time, since i have lost all hope proving you that plant are great -.- . you only rely on your brother in law, what makes you think sure he is right. He has aquariums, fish etc. for a long time, but that only means he has money to buy em. Anyways thats your opinioun, and if you want to keep it, keep it, theyre not my fish afterall. But for sake of your fish google some info on fish

wow, you looked after a friend's fish for a day and it died? lol

I just know I'm right. It's not just my brother in law, I've been getting a subscription to Tropical Fish Hobbyist monthly for 2 years, as well as a member of their forum.

Rofl you tell people that you are right, and yet you yourself are googling this information? So you don't get the credit should, in any case are right(which i don't think you are, my dad has 11 fighting fish with no plants in each container. They're still fine.). And, don't tell others to be open minded when you yourself are too selfish to take in what indy said. You may, or may not be right, but at least your method could work, so respect what he says too. <.<

What makes you think i googled that info? Im telling him to google it, since i dont want to explain all fish keeping info. For goldfish its acceptable to have no plants (its not good, but...), but for fighting fish...thats just plain stupid. I think you know about fish as much, as a dog knows about carrots. I truly hope you havent got more than 1 male fighting fish in aquarium-that would not just be stupid, it would be..[cabbage] stupid...and i hope its at least 50 litres( still might be too small, 100l would be great, more likley you havent got those fish...you just wanted to shine (i might be wrong tho...i hope it wount turn out as a flame war). And the open minded part was because he didnt wanted to admit, that plants absorbe nitrates etc. :shame:

Hello,

Well I have had a long experience with Fish, particulary gold fish. When we first came to Canada my mother bought 12 fish, put it in a tiny bowl, which was pretty tiny. The fish were all crowded and everytime some died. 1st week about 6 died. 2nd week 4 died. 1 month later 1 died. Then their was one, the 1 that ate all the other ones:p.

That evenntaully lived for 4 years, until their was an overnight LEAK in the tank and then it died:(.

Then it was the year of about 1999, we bought another fish. We put it in a bowl to start out and it lived till May 2007, it was a long experince:).

Anyways, we finally decided to buy fish.

We have an aquarium, medium size. Mom just bought 2 gold fish. They seem pretty rapid, she wants to " keep the top opened " so they get some oxygen lol for a couple days..im like w/e .. the tank is about 2/3 full. Now im wondering if i put like the aquirum top on will it affect their breathing at all? The top does have some holes, which arent to big but some holes...is it safe to have the top on WITHOUT an oxygen generator in the tank?

- I do have 1 but i think it like is to strong for the fish but any opinions, ideas, or anything that i should fix about making these fish live?:P

Thanks!

Ok, keeper of fish, andy_matthews, is here.

1. Don't put any fish in a bowl. That is the easiest way to kill it.

2. If it is an aquarium, then get a filter.

3. Go to http://www.fishprofiles.com/ to find out information on any fish, and how to care for any fish.

Enjoy.

11 small stackable tanks for 11 fighting fish yeah i think that works

Um how large are those tanks? At least say how litres is the smallest one

You forgot heater, since goldfish are tropical fish, and they need warm water(24-26c)

Goldfish aren't tropical fish and the temperatures you mentioned are at the upper limit of what they can tolerate. Ideal temperature for goldfish is between 50-75 degrees.

"The only way to avoid packaging the water would be to deliver it to people's homes and places of business through some sort of amazingly intricate and complex series of reservoirs, pumping stations, pipes . . . hey, wait a second.."

Hmmm...most species of goldfish i know of need 24-26 temperature, but if cinda think about it...they keep goldfish in pounds(of course not aquarium species) so, i guess both of us might be right, since name goldfish is used for many many goldfish species (c. auratus,c. gibelo etc<---ok i admit i googled those 2 latin name)
