Tons Left Homeless

Thousands of Chileans may have to sleep in the streets Wednesday night after a 7.7 magnitude earthquake rattled in the north part of the country, killing at least two people, injuring dozens and destroying hundreds of homes.

"There are more than a thousand, 1,200 houses, at least, that were totally flattened, and others in bad shape," Tocopilla Mayor Luis Moyano said in an interview that aired on Radio Cooperativo.

Tocopilla, north of Santiago, is about 35 km (21 miles) from the quake's epicenter.

"Tonight, people are going to have to sleep in the street, beause there are a great number of houses that are uninhabitable," said Moyano.

Places that could be used as shelters, such as schools and gyms, were damaged in the quake, the mayor said. Moyano put the number of people without shelter at 4,000.

Tocopilla's population is 24,000.

Moyano described going through the damaged city and running into someone saying, "Mayor, my house collapsed. What do I do? Mayor, I don't have water. What do I do?"

"It gets to you," he said.

The government's Office of National Emergency reported that two women had died and others were injured in the city. Officials identified one of those killed as 54-year-old Olga Petronila Ortiz Cisternas. The other fatality was an 88-year-old woman. VideoWatch what a 7.7 earthquake can do ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâû

Municipal official Ljubica Ukurtovic, in an interview with Chilean TV station TVN, said that "approximately 100 people" had sought treatment at a Tocopilla hospital.

The quake collapsed a roadway tunnel, temporarily trapping about 50 construction workers. See where the quake struck ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâû

High level government sources said the workers had been rescued.

Repair work on the 793-meter (2,600-foot) Pedro Galleguillos tunnel, completed in 1994, began on October 1 and was to be finished early next year.

Tocopilla is about 1,245 km (780 miles) north of Santiago and the quake was felt in Peru and Bolivia, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The temblor was centered at a depth of 60 km (37 miles), the USGS said.

According to meteorologists, quakes that occur deep underground are preferred to shallow ones, because more of the energy is absorbed by the Earth.

A tsunami warning was issued for the South Pacific coast after the quake hit, but was canceled within an hour.

Chile has been the scene of hundreds of strong earthquakes throughout history, including the largest one of the 20th century on May 22, 1960. The quake that struck southern Chile that day registered a magnitude 9.5 and launched a tsunami that caused damage as far away as Hawaii, Japan and the Philippines.

Nearly 6,000 people died as a result of the quake and its tsunami. A magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck southern Chile on January 25, 1939, killed 28,000 people. A magnitude 9.0 earthquake in what was then southern Peru but is now northern Chile killed 25,000 people in 1868.

Many people have had their lives ruined because of earthquakes in various parts of the world.

Maybe Mr. pretentious Mayor could share his palace and suspend activities in the cityhall to provide shelter for his own citizens who don't have a place to sleep in, rather than puffing his cigar and saying things he doesn't even mean.

Why are you so quick to judge people you know nothing about?

You have no idea how stressful a powerful job like that can be, everyone blames you for everything, and you get very little respect for the good things you do.

Just like not blaming the mayor of New Orleans for dismissing the calls to build a new dam 'nonsense' and 'waste of money'?

If I were a citizen in there right now with 3 kids and nowhere to sleep, I wouldn't frankly give a rat's behind about the mayor's feelings. The citizens elected him and pay him his salary in the first place.

If I'm in a position like that, my life becomes secondary to those I'm serving.

Read this. I have nothing more to say. The man wasn't even a politician, he utilized his own business property to save over a thousand human lives because they needed the shelter to stay alive.

"It gets to you"

Is that seriously all a mayor with political power can say and do?

Oh no, a insignificant amount of the worlds population is now homeless. Lets make a thread about it.

Oh shut up.

Why does everyone complain about the news threads? Am I the only person who finds them (mostly) interesting? But anyway, just to make a cliche statement, if you don't like the thread, don't comment on it. Not that bloody hard.

Cool.

after all that ranting you still said nothing about this mayor in particular, all you did was throw political garbage at me

how do you know all he said "it gets to you", you read one saying and rip the guy apart, he could be working his [wagon] off trying to help these people right now, and yes I know about the rwanda hotel manager, but as I said it has no bearing on what I'm trying to say to you

People don't care about people anymore. People care about themselfs.

As long as its not them in a earthquake, as long as its not them on a cold street and homeless, as long as its not their situation or problem, they don't care what happens to people and get on the internet forums acting E-go big and bad as if their hardcore for acting so harsh on a internet gaming forum.

But i'm not worried about such people, what comes around, goes around, and when they find they are homeless one day and there is no one around to care, its their own fault.

If you love me, send me a PM.

I am sorry if i come to off topic to find interesting topics about something that isn't everywhere else on the internet. There are literally hundreds of news stories per day about all the terrible bad things that happen in the world. 2 people dead? More people than that die per day in Baghdad. Yet do you see anyone making a daily thread about them? Or how about all of the local fires that accidentally happen and leave thousands of people homeless per day? 3.5 million people in the US alone are homeless. If you want to talk about bad things, just take a gander at anything in the world. But the point is you don't have to make a post about it.

And now this other guy tells me that i am only concerned with myself. Let me ask you something, what is the last thing that you did for someone that REALLY had an impact on anything? Myself? I gave blood today. I donated to cancer today. I live in a very diverse city where people care about things that happen in the world. Just because i find this trivial and insignificant doesn't mean i don't care. I care a lot, do you care? Obviously you do. So what do you plan to do about it? Nothing. You plan to sit here and be the moral police for off topic. So which is worse? Someone who thinks that natural disasters are a part of life, or someone who thinks they are helping someone by posting a news story on a forum.

Earthquakes happen everyday. Everyday a natural disaster happens and people die. Everyday someone is murdered and everyday multiple car crashes happen, causing more grief than you can imagine. So where are the threads about them? Nowhere, because we are used to it. I guess that is what we get for being aware of the world. Getting used to how bad life [cabbage]s on the human race.

Should i make daily topics whether or not i had breakfast? Granted this is an extreme example, but the principle remains the same. It happens every day, and it has no effect on your daily life. When i want to read the news, i read the newspaper. Or BBC. Or MSNBC. Or CNN. See now topics like the man marrying the dog is different. It doesn't happen everyday. Its entertaining. I haven't heard something that ridiculous in a long time. Its worth getting my attention.

To contribute to the topic: Oh no, i hate natural disasters. Our government and the local government should do more to support the survivors. Blah blah blah blah blah.
