Vansing
Well since Jagex will be in charge of all prices in January, i think they will be aiming to lower the prices. They never liked people making money from them :|
FooK-A-Ji
No they are not. All holiday items will be untradeable. And have been after santa hat drops. Besides dropping items that can be traded again won't make them rare, when there are 200.000 ppl online nowadays. The first rare item drop (pumpkins) saw about 1000-2000 people online AT MOST. which is why the items are rare in the first place.. less ppl online, less picked up, higher demand now that a few MILLION ppl don't have the items. Nope... The reason they're rare is that new ones can't be obtained, not because only a few people got them. Like I pick a stone from the ground and I'm the only one who has one, does that make it rare? No, because anyone else can just pick one up. THat there were people on for the drops, a significantly SMALLER amount of people. Now there is more than 5000x the amount of players, who all want the same item.. And theres a handful of people in comparison, who have it..

Yes, but if a gagillion people pick up a stone, and there are no stones anymore, that isn't rare either. It's a combination of the two, but I think in this case, the lack of players at the time is the bigger factor. Regardless, none of those people should live in glass houses. pryomancer
They get rarer and thus more expensive because- 1 There weren't as many people around back then to get them 2 Players didn't know how expensive they would become 3 Players get banned, due and lose them etc 4 All these stakers have quit now, and the rich ones had like 30bil of rares

Nul_Oblivion
I never really got involved with rares for two reasons. One; I could never afford one even if I sold my life away. And two; they're way too unpredictable and serve no purpose. They're just a symbol of wealth. I have a feeling that as the Summoning skill gets even closer to its release, the rares will probably drop more in price because people will want to get some money to train Summoning. Therefore, you'll have lots of people selling rares and there will be a larger supply of them. People will want to get some of their rares off their hands quickly. Just a thought. @Dan3HitU
Basically; Old players will all retire at some point, and the 4th generation of RS players will start, meaning less demand for rares (they won't care, they'll care more about skills and the fact that RS is a game not about collecting items you can't get anymore). The only reason they're still tradable is because some older players still play. The first generation, the ones who picked them up, are the least obsessed with rares, seeing as we all got them for free. Poeple think having 10 blues is mad sick. But playing 7 years back and seeing blues covering the runescape world along with every color of the rainbow kind of makes you NOT want to pay 100 billion or whatever the hell a party hat costs :P Same goes with discs.. they cost 10 gp, i'm not paying 8 mil for one now. pumpkins... hmm well i just talked to old friends, we found out that most actually just went pking with free food. why should we pay millions now? What you saying is partly true. Except its the 2nd and 3rd generation that keeps rare trading alive, not old 1st genertation players. cuz we dont really see the reason to spend money on what was once a free gift. :P you are of course right , that many have quit and the rares sort of "disappear" with the inactive account. my mate shumli has for example over 140 masks which was half of what her and I picked up during the multiple hour drops that halloween :P havent seen her on in 4-5 years

But what I was trying to say is the first generation got them and kept them (some used them, I personally used Pumpkins for PKing as they healed pretty nice and they where free). The newer players WANT what the older players had (no idea why, maybe its to "get noticed" or something), without old players having them, no one would be bothered. FooK-A-Ji
true, but the majority of rares have already left the old players hands, since merchants like duke freedom and mctavish and gasheart bought em at what was than an insane price.. the merchants have now sold them on to 2nd and 3rd generation players a long time ago.. since the majority of bank pics and char pics with rares in are posted by players that I KNOW weren't around back than, its easy to conclude that rare trading is mostly run by new generation players :) and ya lol, i remember pking with pumps, than i killed some dude and had to eat to pick up his gear, than i ate his pumps just4fun 8-) it was best food when they dropped :P
Duke_Freedom
Yes but we're not talking about stones. No, we're talking about paper hats and rotten food (common - who in his right might would still take a bite of a 5 year old pumpkin?). However, if Jagex had decided to add stones in the game and later cancel them we'd be talking about stones right now. :D why should we pay millions now? For the same reason that people can pay thousands for some rare post stamp or $7.59 million for a 1933 golden coin. It's madness - just don't ask the "why" question. I don't think all this talk about generations of players is really relevant either. Rares are wanted by many people in all of the generations. Regarding phats it may even be so that many / most phats in roulation are actually duped items instead of orginal christmas drops... Back to what the topic was about: i notice that people are selling all there rares for super cheap is there sumthing fishy going on with? Rares are logically declining in price due to a variety of reasons like: - The uncertainity about their practical tradability once the January update is done. - What Jagex may or may not do: we all know Jagex doesn't really like rares and the GE is giving them absolute control over item prices. - The overall chaos caused by the recent updates is certainly not positive for the price stability of rares. Plus, there are people quiting due to the recent updates and selling off their rares. - People may be 'cashing in' their rares for RWT purposes while it is still possible. - Many other items have declined in price. People may be selling rares to buy those up and profit of them. - New merchanting feature (the GE) that may be far more profitable than actively trading phats for good merchants. This leads to a lower net amount of phats held by merchants and less liquidity of rares as fewer merchants will actively "make a market" in them. - Negative market sentiment The value of my bank at its height. Estimated value at the peak of the rares market: 250 billion+.Most likely the largest trade in RuneScape ever. Estimated value at the peak of the rares market: 70 billion+. If Jagex released a tradable holiday item now, that you could get multiples of (like you could with masks or pumpkins), people would stockpile hundreds, and they would never be worth much of anything. Even if everybody could only get 1, people would keep them, and they would take over 10 times as long to mature (become more rare), at which time Runescape probably won't be around.
