What defines Rock these days?

I'm not sure about everyone else, but a lot of music seems to be classified as Rock when it isn't. Half the music that I hear that people call "Rock" music is all pop and hip hop. Anyone else notice this?

38% of Tip.Iters put stupid made up statistics in their sigs. If you are one of the 62% that don't, put this in your sig.

The general modern music genre scale goes like this:

Music I like = Rock

Music I hate = Emo

Unless they listen to rap or heavy metal, in which case it is so difficult to mistake them for rock that Homer Simpson has a hard time doing it.

You say the music that people are calling rock isn't rock, but perhaps you just have a narrow view of rock, only allowing 2 or 3 sub-genres to come under its name. But anyway, I try to appreciate music for what it is rather than its genre. Doesn't always work though..

Cool.

Does it really matter what you call it?

well, with, rock, i dont care, but if someone mislabels music i listen to, it really makes me mad. so IMO yes it does matter what you call it

Cannibal Corpse, they're screamo, right?

If you're doing what I think you're doing, hehe -- good one ;p.

Anyways it doesn't really matter if someone, who doesn't listen to your genre, can't actually say what it is. I mean, I don't expect someone to know that Burzum and Darkthrone are black metal, and dream theater is more of prog metal. I mean most people probably haven't even heard of those bands.

Its like asking me the various genres of rap or something. I don't really know the sub genres of it.

Now it does get me when someone who is supposedly a 'big fan' of said band and doesn't have a clue what genre they are. Thats about it though.

As far as rock goes, can't there or isn't there kind of a "pop rock" like there is pop punk? I would think something like 'the police' would be a pop rock band.

Dunno though.

hmm.. I would think you would start to act defensive, you know, try and play it off like it doesn't really bother you when any normal person would just ignore it.

I thought they were pop?

Honestly, I don't even know the exact genre of most of the music I listen to, quite frankly I don't care. I like the music, going around remidning everyone what genre your music is.. is so, poser-ish.

I've got to say anything without an annoying voice, when it has guitars, bass, drums, and keyboards.

To be perfectly honest, nobody cares, most people (including me.) just listen to what sounds good, in their opinion.

It doesn't matter. Music is too easily labeled, and because of this the creativity is lost a lot of times. Just listen to it and be happy.

Music for the creative win. :)

This is true. Some of my favorite bands are incredibly difficult to actually label what kind of music they are because they take inspirations from so many various genres.
