Cyco_Reborn
So, I was wondering which is your favourite and why? If you dont listen to any then dont bother posting. This is all done from my own knowledge of Metal. My favourite is Goregrind because of how agressive it sounds and how good it is to Headbang to. Death comes in a close second. EDIT: Sub-Genres and Definitions EDIT2: And now with example Band!!! (to listen to if you dont understand the definitions) Avant-Garde: Like Heavy metal, but uses lots of experimentation and unusual instruments. Band: Celtic Frost Beer: Thrash, but has an Irish jig kind of rhythm. Good to drink to. Band: Tankard Black: Originated from early Thrash, but uses less Bass guitar and traditionally are poorly recorded. Poorly recorded... as in recorded on a child's boombox in mono. Uses shrieking vocals. Bands can usually be recognised by masses of Black leather, covered in [bleep]es or nails and a face covered in corpsepaint. Band: Mayhem Blackened-Death: A combination of Black and Death Metal. Band: Belphegor Brutal-Death: Death metal, but often with a heavier bass line and higher pitched drums. Band: Immolation Death: Like Thrash, but heavier. Often uses Guttural or Growling vocal styles. Band: Death Deathgrind: Grindcore with more elements of Death Metal than Fastcore punk. Band: Cattle Decapitation Doom/Drone: Slow, rythmic pace often using droning riffs and heavy metal sytle, high-pitched and epic sounding vocals. Band: Candlemass Folk: Very catchy, metal versions of traditional folk songs. Band: Finntroll Glam: Pretty much normal metal, but with ridiculous outfits. Not to be confused with its little Twisted Sister[/bad pun], Glam Rock. Band: GWAR Groove: Uses some elements of Industrial metal and Thrash. Its groovy!!! Band: White Zombie/Rob Zombie Heavy: Normal metal, pretty much. If you don't know what this sounds like: GO AWAY!!! Band: Iron Maiden Industrial: A version of Heavy metal that takes parts of electro-pop and uses distorted vocals. Band: Ministry Melodic-Death: Death metal but with a much catchier rhythm. Generally not as fast. Band: Bloodbath Neo-Classical: A form of Heavy metal that takes influence from classical music. Band/Artist: Yngwie Malmsteen Porn: Usually a form of Grindcore or Brutal-Death metal with Pornographic lyrical themes and distinctive gurgling, pitch-shifted vocals. Band: Gut Power: Like Heavy metal, usually faster and with higher pitched vocals. Lyrics are usually very fantasy based. Band: Manowar Progressive: Like Heavy metal, but is often a lot more complex and guitar-lead. Band: Tool Sludge: A combination of Doom metal and uses some traits of punk, often with shouted vocals and sharp changes in guitar at random intervals. Band: Eyehategod Speed: Like Thrash, but faster, usually with higher guitars and vocals. Band: Nuclear Assault Stoner: Slow and often droning, like Doom metal, but uses more Bass guitar and has a very Pyschodelic theme. Band: Acid Bath Symphonic-Black: Often uses the same style as Black Metal, but uses an orchestra or something similar. Pretty much, Black metal with a keyboardist. :P Band: Anorexia Nervosa Technical-Death: Death metal, but with a very experimental style. The classic bands (Cynic, Atheist etc.) often include features of jazz. Often quite fast. Band: Atheist Techno Metal: A combination of Electronic music and Death metal, very fast. Band: The Berzerker Thrash: Similar to a fast version of Heavy metal with shouted vocals. The Thrash 4: Anthrax, Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer Viking: Like Heavy metal, but with a galloping-pace and viking style lyrics. Band:Bathory My Last.FmLeekSpinner!!!Random Furry Dance!!!Proud to hate life, since not too long ago!!!
Intriguing
Progressive should be up there. But Black is my favourite, 3rd wave in particular. I listen to a bit of 2nd wave, but not much. Awesome Black Metal bands: - Anaal Nathrakh - Burzum - Dark Funeral - Shining - Blut aus Nord - Elffor Cool.
Zierro
Thrash because I like to thrash. Next would be Heavy.
Cyco_Reborn
Progressive should be up there. Nadril
I don't know if I have a favorite sub genre in all honesty, I like them all about the same. Not as much of a death fan though, although I really just don't listen to much of it. Oh and you should put Drone and Doom up there as well.
Kalphite
Prog, followed by Power, followed by most others, followed by death and grind.
Intriguing
Oh and you should put Drone and Doom up there as well. I was going to suggest that as well. And at risk of being flamed, you could possibly put Nu-Metal and Metalcore up there as well. I mean, if you're going to see what sub-genres of metal people like the best, you may as well show the entire spectrum. Thank you for putting Progressive up there. :) Progressive would be my second favourite, probably: - Between the Buried and Me - Tool - Dream Theater - Shining (Also Black Metal) Cool. Range_This11
Tool owns prog metal. They've been around for nearly 20 years and have never released a garbage album. Every Tool album is crafted to the finest detail and average is never accepted by the members. The maturity of the band is quite astounding. "He could climb to it, if he climbed alone, and once there he could suck on the pap of life, gulp down the incomparable milk of wonder."
Jernlov
Death doom is my favourite. - Opeth (kind of extreme prog, but they're quite doom-y) - Swallow the Sun - My Dying Bride - Anathema Steam | Soup | Last.fm

warren211
Can someone define these metals for me?! The only ones I know are death and heavy metal... There's a porn metal? Good lord... [hide=]tip it would pay me $500.00 to keep my clothes ON :( :lol:But then again, you fail to realize that 101% of the people in this universe hate you. Yes, humankind's hatred against you goes beyond mathematical possibilities. That tears it. I'm starting an animal rebellion using my mind powers. Those PETA bastards will never see it coming until the porcupines are half way up their asses.[/hide]Apparently a lot of people say it. I own. http://linkagg.com/ Not my site, but a simple, budding site that links often unheard-of websites that are amazing for usefulness and fun. Viking metal seems to be more like folk metal with Norse themes from what I've heard of it. Steam | Soup | Last.fm
Nadril
Yeah I guess I always put them closer to a mix of death / viking myself. Speaking of Viking metal, Bathory ftw  . Hammerheart and Nordlands I + II are [bleep]ing brilliant albums.
