Some douche bags think they're being funny if they create a new forum account and post half a dozen spam topics per minute. This happens mostly in the General Discussion forum, and it's happened on many occasions (the latest being a few minutes after I made this post, it was what gave me the idea).

 

A few months ago a guy did this, and although his posts were deleted, the forum account used to spam was not banned (not even temporarily) and I've seen him post in some topics (can't remember his username, something with a T).

 

So why not make it that forum accounts with less that 50 or 100 posts cannot create forum topics, either in all or certain forums. It would help cut down on the spam a bit.

Although it seems like a good idea, this would probably drive away the people who register with the intention of actually becoming part of the community.

 

Plus there's usually a moderator on to deal with the spammers.

Well it doesn't have to be so that a user needs a gigantic post count to be able to create topics. I'd say 50 post count is good, but it could be something like 30 or 25. If it's a new user, they'd be busy discovering the discussions they haven't been a part of. And by the time they take part in the ongoing discussions they'll find they've reached the required post count to create their own topics.

 

Not to mention it would also help cut down on topics like "Hi I'm new here!" which get locked anyway.

I don't think this is a good idea, all we need to do is just make sure Moderators get to the worst spammy subjects in time and ban people when it is obvious they are trolls.

^That thing that you described is possible, all forums can be set to do a very wide range of different things.

This has been chewed over multiple times and I still disagree with it. Tip.it has always been a very open, welcoming, unrestricted forum.. meaning that we have NO post count requirements on any forum. I do recall RSC having post count requirements in specific forums such as their art-related forum and possibly their Off-Topic forum (and maybe a few others). I remember registering on RSC a few years ago and after realizing that I wouldn't be able to post in the forums I was interested in until I posted elsewhere 50 times, I thought, "Okay screw this..." and never came back.

 

 

 

Of all things, having post count requirements in certain forums would encourage spamming from users who would not normally spam or discourage users from registering at all. The whole community should not be punished because of spammers.

The mod team can deal with the spam anyway, it always gets removed eventually. And if there is a spammer posting dangerous links etc, people always spam the topic with warnings, so there's no real threat to users.

Nah, I think pyro means people posting things like "You idiot, dont spam" in threads instead of reporting them. Or doing both. Or posting an In-before-the-lock .gif image.

 

 

 

I meant when someone posts a topic with link to a dangerous site, you always get a few people who will reply with 'dont click the link!!!' etc. It's pretty helpful, despite being spam.

The reason I joined Tip.it over other fansites in the first place was mainly because they didn't place all these restrictions on new users. I'm heavily against this.

And then look at the comparative activity between the graphics forum, narrative area, clan area, and any post count restricted area on RSC to Tip.It. So obviously not that many people were 'put off' as you were.

 

 

 

But I do agree that putting post count requirements to post in forums isn't very encouraging to new users, but I do think post counts to post new topics in certain forums is a good idea.
