Dude spends 5 years to make a DS game = Bob's Game

Featured Replies

I saw this online and at first I was bewildered. What the ef? What kind of a game is this? Then I watched a vid...and another... read some interviews... Conclusion: I GOT TO HAVE IT. Enjoy:

Hello.

My name is Bob, age 25.

This is my game for Nintendo DS, a 20-hour-long retail-size,

retail-quality adventure title by a single human being-

the largest game ever made by one person.

"bob's game" is a simple 2D adventure game, with focus on

story, puzzles, item collection, and communication instead

of repetitive battles with palette-swapped enemies.

Many characters (over 200 completely unique characters!)

have deep personalities that evolve, and many things

depend on the in-game time, day and weather.

It's the game I wanted to play when I was younger,

a vision I've been following since then.

The game looks very interesting, certainly a unique one.

So tell me, am I alone here?

Nice effort.

But I really find all Offline RPG's extremely boring; with the odd exception for afew hours.

Yeah...Some people just go out of their way to ruin other peoples fun.
Sounds like Jagex to me...

There won't be much RPGing in this game from what I see, it's more of a visual novel than a game of advancing levels and grinding. It is not an RPG, (it may not sound all that different) but an adventure game.

If you enjoy books, or story based games, you will feel right at home.

I wanted to show you guys part of one of the interviews, I found it very interesting.

I'm absolutely thrilled by the response I'm receiving. The past half-decade has been quite stressful for me, filled with moments of hopelessness and uncertainty, to say the least. The time from 19-24 for an introverted, geeky male is difficult enough on its own right, and I had more than my share of nights spent wondering what the heck I'm doing.

People don't see any of that, they just see my cheerful responses and they might think I'm too proud.

I'm more relieved than proud- I've beat up on myself for too long, but just kept pushing because I believed in the idea.

Maybe it's some crazy kind of karma, or maybe people just like the idea, but it's incredible what's happening and I genuinely couldn't possibly be more thankful.

Anything else you want the public to know about Bob's Game and your saga that I haven't asked or that you haven't relayed yet?

I really want people to know that there's a lot more in store- more than any video could show.

I obsessed over the thing for half a decade, there's parts that'll make you cry, there's parts that'll make your heart beat out of your chest.

There are things that have never been done before, and things that have never been done quite so well.

A lot of it is common sense given the circumstance. For instance, I'll reveal something here - The credits are not simply credits.

In place of a scrolling list of names, it's an actual story of the making of. "You just played it, now this is how it was made."

So is this Homebrew and thus free, or is it being published? I remember one of the comments in the videos saying "Now I just need to find a publisher".

That game looks excellent, and it is really hard to believe that a single person made it.

There's no such thing as regret. A regret means you are unhappy with the person you are now,

and if you're unhappy with the person you are, you change yourself. That

regret will no longer be a regret, because it will help to form the new,

better you. So really, a regret isn't a regret.

It's experience.

He is getting it published, his main goal was to develop a retail sized commercial game.

He says in one of the interviews:

I want to get published on the DS mainly because of the satisfaction of having it manufactured. It's not the most profitable medium. I'll make $1 or $2 a copy instead of the $5 or $10 I could make online.

There's just something about seeing what I worked on for so long in a shrink wrapped box, even if it's buried in a bargain bin at Wal-Mart or in a junk box at a garage sale. It's important to me, because it's the original goal of really having that little chunk of magic plastic I wanted when I was a kid glued to a GameBoy.

That's part of why it is so interesting, most commercial games take dozens of people and hundreds of thousands of dollars to create, this guy wanted to show that he can create a commercial game by himself from scratch.

He spent half a decade of his life on it, obviously he wants it to reach as great of an audience as possible.

wow, kudos to him for his dedication, and making such an excellent game by himself, from scratch =D>

This game looks really good, I would actually buy it, simply because it looks like a decent game to play, I love how the crowds of people block your way lol like in school halls...

Luck be a Lady

Gaming joy at it's peak. hallelujah

When/if it is published, I will buy it. Not really cause of the look of the game, but more cause he spent so much time on his own programming a game. He is my hero.

looks like an interactive friendly walk around the city game. i'd love to play it someday. though i wonder if he's going to make a whole series out of it.

Seems to me like a cartoon version of GTA.

Might try it if it is available on the PC.

I think the greatest part about this is the name. "Bob's Game". Bob. If this guy were named Richard or Joshua, there's no way it could sound awesome. But his name is Bob. Awesome.

I really like the game's overall look and epic music, I dunno about you guys, but I've been listening to the cinematic trailer's music for two days.

The concept is also very awesome, from what he told in the interviews, it'll be a game about games, and the ending boss is Bob himself, who created the game, so you will literally be playing Bob's game in Bob's game.

He said in one of the interviews:

The credits are not simply credits.

In place of a scrolling list of names, it's an actual story of the making of. "You just played it, now this is how it was made."

Now tell me if that's not awesome. How many games have you played like that?

He is also putting a lot of his own thoughts and life experiences in the dialogue, the game is literally part of his life now, he spent so much time on it.

Correction: the pen is mightier than the SMG.

Anyway, that is insane. An average of 8 hours a day on that... A third of his time during the prime of his life, lol. Pretty impressive. 40k hits in a day is insane.

Well, see, this is quite interesting. I'm not sure whether it can actually can be published as an official Nintendo-endorsed game. Nintendo's develop support program only covers companies who already develop games in a team, and who have specialised in certain key areas:

Wikipedia[/url]":39bcm6uh]To be accepted into Nintendo's official developer support program, companies must have a game development team and adequate experience in certain areas. Additional information is available from the Nintendo Software Development Support Group

I suppose he could publish it as an unofficial DS title - it's not like that's not happened to Nintendo before. I wouldn't get your hopes up on this being published on anything other than homebrew though, unless Nintendo relax the rules in this case.
