Kevin_
Hello, i just got my tonsils removed last thursday, the doctor barely gave me info and i'm really struggling with the pain and several questions. I'm nearly 18 years old btw. I'm taking painkillers, medicines to make sure it doesn't get infected and a substitute for toothpaste. When will the pain stop, eg when will i'll be able to eat normal, talk etc. Is it normal that my teeth and my ears hurt? And that it hurts the most when i wake up. Before anyone says go visit a doctor, i don't see the use, posting it here might give me some answers because i'm obviously not the only one in the world that got his tonsils removed. Thanks Some people dream of success, while others make it happen.
Mollerz
Well both my sisters got their tonsils taken out when they were very young (2 and 5) but I'm 15 now and haven't had them out. I hope I don't follow in my dad's footsteps because he had them out at 22, and the older you are, the more painful it is. But they've told me everything I need to know for when that happens, if it ever does. I'm assuming they recommend to eat jelly, ice cream and stuff like that. Don't do this, it takes you like five times as long to recover. Eat bread, toast and crackers - these are rough and your throat will get used to it much faster. Don't talk at all, take it slow, talk a word or two every hour to try and get used to it. Seriously, get a whiteboard and marker and board rubber, use this until you find it easier to talk. Try and get used to the pain as much as you can, unless it is absoloutely destroying you on the inside. It's normal that when you wake up it hurts more because you probably naturally breathe through your mouth when asleep. That's about all I can think of at the moment. Good luck with a fast recovery! Kevin_
I hope I don't follow in my dad's footsteps because he had them out at 22, and the older you are, the more painful it is. Yeah, sadly enough this is true. I'm assuming they recommend to eat jelly, ice cream and stuff like that. Don't do this, it takes you like five times as long to recover. Eat bread, toast and crackers - these are rough and your throat will get used to it much faster. Thanks for the tip, they did tell me that and i've mainly been eating ice cream and jelly. Don't talk at all, take it slow, talk a word or two every hour to try and get used to it. Seriously, get a whiteboard and marker and board rubber, use this until you find it easier to talk. Yeah, i've been using the laptop and typing into notepad if i want something, i don't talk often but it's kinda hard when you have visitors over. urbestfreind
I can tell you one thing you shouldn't do - Don't get bored and do what OTers do when they get bored, which is apparently eat glass :twss:. /end bandwagon. I would say eat softer foods, but not ice cream. I remember reading somewhere that ice cream is bad for something like this, as it slows the healing process. Get something like applesauce. No dairy, soft, tastes pretty good, and it's kind of like having a drink and food in one..Oh, and speaking of drinks, I would stay away from milk in case the whole dairy thing is true (I'm too tired to look it up now). I would suggest juice, or maybe a slushie? Don't know if the slushie would be bad (due to ice or whatever), but it seems safe. My dad said something about jaw muscles hurting after the process. That would mean, to me, that you would need to do some chewing on something in order to work out, and fix that muscle. Just a thought. I'll go do some more research on it tomorrow, but I'm pretty sure about that no dairy thing. I'll be able to back up these claims later, so don't quote me on them just yet. [hide=Funny Quotes]So you sucker punched a kid in the back of the head? Good job. What scares me is that you're like 10 years old.-.- im not that freaking youngYou were a couple years ago. It's not racist if its true.Hmm... I wonder how one goes about throwing someone out a window in a mystic fashion :-k The mental image for that is freaking awesome.[/hide]- I dont need to "get a life." justin_m23
I got my tonsils out when I was like 10 or something. I can't even remember the pain. Point is, it will pass. P.s. Avoid Granola bars and Hot coffee (Hot and scratchy, hot and scratchy).

Slowly speak more frequently over time, so maybe once every few hours, and slowly whittle it down until it's every 15 minutes or so. If pain comes back, go right back to the start speaking only every few hours again even if it's totally fine for the next few days. Better safe than sorry. :) Click my signature for my blog! pokemama
Had mine out at age 25 - so yeah, I feel your pain. I drank codeine (as prescribed by the doctor) for a week. It does get better, but I'd rather have a baby again than have my tonsils out again. If you had them out last Thursday you should be coming to the end of the pain around now. Never delay taking pain medication if you are due for a dose - medical studies show that the pain receptors actually get *more sensitive* so it makes the pain worse by not numbing it. I don't advise eating rough foods or whatever, I'd follow the medical advice given - popsicles and that stuff. If it was a good idea to do rougher stuff, they'd tell you. If you are on watch for infection, I'd suggest taking your temperature at the same time every day so you will notice any change. In the long run, you can be glad you had them out, as it will protect you from serious illness in the future. (Strep throat attacks your tonsils. Untreated strep infections can damage the heart and kidneys, sometimes fatally.) One thing they don't tell you though - in the future (after you are healed), don't bend over too far to drink out of a water fountain. Abstract knowledge that the throat and nasal passages are connected was never so unpleasantly demonstrated. it's a lot easier to get over yourself when you look at intelligence the same way you look at beauty, or height, or eye color: being smart is easy, but being good is hard ... being smart is handed to you, being good is handed to *nobody*. Are you saying that if you had your tonsils out and you bend over far enough while drinking from a water fountain, it will come out your nose? I've got to see that. Will H
I can tell you one thing you shouldn't do - Don't get bored and do what OTers do when they get bored, which is apparently eat glass :twss: Agreed. Eating glass is a bad idea soon after a tonsillectomy, even if you are really bored, which I'm sure is a great possibility when you can't speak to other people. I've never had my tonsils removed, and don't plan to. I get tonsillitis, but very very infrequently, so it's not worth the hassle. ~ W ~
obfuscator
I'm glad to hear you are feeling better. Now I get to look forward to having mine out soon :( "It's not a rest for me, it's a rest for the weights." - Dom Mazzetti

barbwireboy3
I had my tonsils removed when i was 4. Hurt alot at the time but after a couple of weeks it totally stopped hurting. The only difference to me is that i talk slightly different than i used to. But once it stops hurting, you will never ever feel it again. Well, i havent anyway :D Good luck
