Beware of this scamming method!

Featured Replies

Tonight I got asked to join a clan. To make the story short, I was going to make an application, which was on the "runescape forums". The site was totally alike the actual runescape site, and I noticed the 1/3 second too late that I was not logging on to runescape forums. But giving my password to a scam site. I reacted real quick on this, and was going to change my password, but I was too late. I could'nt change it, as someone had already done so. Luckily, I have all recovery questions and pin set, and all the other info needed to retrieve my account. But it's not any fun.. Be very careful than me, don't go into this trap!

Yep, I heard of that scam via other forum. Can someone report jagex about this?

I got lots of screenshots of my account on from another account i have. And the person that has scammed me, admitting it on whispers.. I got the website where the scam happened. Jagex has the IP-adress of the scammer(s).. This should be enough to get some IP bans right?

Yes, but the situation looks very grim. The people that get banned are going to tell their freinds and they are going to scam, then its going to repeat over and over. Another thing is that they can have dynamic ip's, they can change their ip by turning computer off :ohnoes: .hopefully someone has the heart to not try and scam people.

This is so darn annoying. Watching your own account on. He sais he'll get my account banned if I don't tell him my pin. Well, jagex knows the different IP's and see time of logins, appeals submitted and password changes, right? So I should be kinda safe? I even have the nick of the player that scammed me..

you should be safe, and DO NOT tell him your pin. If he gets you banned send in an appeal that you were not in control of your account but now that you are. They will check ip's and everything will be solved.

Ok, sounds good.. I hope. I'd never even think a second on giving him my pin. Can he delete it though? Or does he have to know my pin to delete it? I got my appeal through, and password back, but he is still on, and I can not log in:|

he can disable your pin but it takes 7 days, you should be fine.

Good luck getting your account back, you will just have to wait and hope for the best. While nobody can stay logged in for 7 days, they could use some kind of bot to keep an account logged in, although it would be unlikely.

I thought there was a mechanism that logs you out after 6 ours, but I dont think you have to stay logged on for the entirety of those 7 days :(

how many runescapers does it take to change a lightbulb?

20,000

1 to change the lightbulb and the rest to complain about how the first one was better

There are lots of bad people in the world, but they're like slinkies; you can have so much fun pushing them down two flights of stairs...

No, but I do have my password, it's just that I can not log in, because the scammer is online. Once I can get into my account, I can turn the pin back on, and the scammer will not be able to get back in if he ever logs out..

Change password, mate. It is not a keylogger on the sites, so they will not know new passwords that you make.

Did you not have a bank pin set? Or was it stuff you were wearing that you lost? Cause I was aware of this before logging out, and banked everything

Someone else on these forums fell for this scam also and didn't have a PIN. Usually I have no sympathy for people who are dumb enough to get their account stolen, but this sounds like a pretty elaborate hoax, and I'm happy to hear that you will undoubtedly get your account back with, most likely, no harm done. I think there is a section on the RSOF that you can report this on, I'm too lazy to look for it though.

there have been such attacks on these forums.

ppl rickroll and fall for them too here. now ill just be more careful at sites and hyperlinks. especially keep a close eye on those -100 post counters who post them

Same happened to me and my problem was I had a phat on my hat. He wanted to drop it in the party room if I don't give him my pin. A friend of mine contacted a pmod and the pmod talked to a jmod to lock my account asap. I hope he hasn't done any damage but I think I don't have to worry since he wanted to BH some items to another account but couldn't get far 'cause the account got locked.

So now I'm just waiting to get my account unlocked. Anyone knows how long this will take approximately?

More and more people are falling for such attempts. Just keep educated and use some common sense, as (hopefully) you will never fall for the same trick twice.

I definately won't fall for this twice, but once might get enough harm done. And this was a very clever scam, to be honest. There was at least 5 people in on this, seing as lots of different players either asked me to join the clan, gave me the "clan website", or pm'ed me to try and make me log out, so they could log in...
