The top mountains still arn't what i want them to be, but realy, i'm tired of working on this one :P, it was mostly ment as a "refresher" piece anyways.

Thank you very much :)

The textures look really awesome on the mountains to the back, but as it gets closer it doesn't look so good. You probably could've amended that by picking a higher angle to view everything from a little further away.

Something about the mountains to the right looks... off. It's like they're made of opaque crystal the way they're faceted.

You may have wanted a riverbank there, but I understand how hard it is to control placement when all the altitudes are so close to each other. A little more slope on the grassy areas could've given you enough space to place banks, but it's not really a big worry.

Overall, I love the piece except for the above points. You HAVE to tell me how you get the clouds to look like that.

I'm in Maui right now, that's why I've been a bit more inactive than usual.

Here is what my friend standing behind me just said "From far away it looks kinda real but when you get up close it looks too fake... like an unreal setting..."

I don't like how dark the foreground is, personally.

ah cool keiph.

yeah, this piece wasn't realy ment as a big thing, mostly something to get back. :)

Im always timid to critique terragenerations. I don't like them to begin with so I have to push myself to be biased for them.

Im no expert on mountains, but as the color shows in the actual rock it looks as if the whole scene is of a large, moss covered, termite colony. Ofcourse, I don't think termite colonies would be covored in moss.. nor would there be a small stream near it, but anyways.

It looks to me, rock of that color would easily crumble over time causing massive, low-top, "mountains" with various ledges, crevises, and deep water-trenches. Add on the river size vs. the tiny mountain to the right of it and realism keeps on going down. Thanks to the river you added, the greens have a reason to grow without rainfall - but it still looks like moss since it's growing up the sides of these mountains, and it further insinuates that there is some rainfall making the rock look even more out of place.

Mmm.. thats enough eating. Now some ideas, right? The textures.. they aren't meant to be seen close up. Like people have been saying, it looks okay far back.. but if you get close you can actually see the separate elements trying to form into one.

Just for fun, why don't you -try- painting a random landscape and then make a terragen landscape. You're digital painting may not look near as pretty, but im betting it will look more "realistic". With a squeeze of irony in every glass.

hmm... well, i do agree that this surface wasn't that great. i've recently discovered stratas, and i must say ,they are amazing.

i've also been putting some more reds into my surfaces, hopefully i can show a new one i've been working on in a big piece soon. part of it is in my sig (an early version)

thanks for the critique though, i'll keep it in mind. guess i haven't been thinking that far yet  :)

Yeah, like (I think) I said (either here or somewhere else). Artistic realism is the culmination of placement.

Take several puzzles made out of several square pieces all of the same size and mix them together. To get realism, you must not only find the correct pieces to that puzzle, but you must also place them correctly. This is why I think referenced realism may not be the best at representing the artists talent as a whole, but it is certainly the best at testing the artists technical abilities.

Artists have a much harder time than their viewers. All an audience has to do is look and realise something isn't right. Artists have to know what isn't right, and know why it isn't right. Thats why many painters are best at painting things they grew up with as opposed to things completely new to them.

I like ya Nad, I want to see you succeed. It's going to be hard to do that with such an inferior tool as Terragen. I know you've heard this before, but stop wasting you time. Pick up a pencil and go. You have too much promise.

first off, thanks sub. I use terragen for the most part of well... i have fun in it. I know that a lot of users don't like the program. some have different views on how it is, all of that. I'm not sure why I realy like it, but I love to experiment with surface maps, atmospheres, the likes.

however, I may try painting something. Maybe start with a terragen render, and then paint on it, mostly use it as a big reference. If i did that i would probaly have a chance, considering the only tablet i have is some peice of junk

But I like the idea. I'm always looking for ways to improve my art. And i guess your comment about the painting what you know, well guess it kind of applys to me and landscapes. My family moves around alot, and of course usualy visits alot of places, so i come to encounter with a lot of landscapes. Switzerland, germany, italy, ect.

so... to sum it up, I think i'll try a painting. Maybe "start" with a terragen render for my first one and paint over it, than once i get the hang of it, go bigger. :)

Ive said this before about Terragen pieced but ill say it again.

It looks totally fake. I have never seen mountains and cliffs like that ever. Its far to [bleep]ey with so many very steep tiny peaks which also are very smooth. this would not happen in real life.

The shadow overcasting does ruin the front of the pice too but i guess its the only way of hiding the fake textures

I think you should stop using terragen for the entire piece. Crack open photoshop and brush in some better textures. Its the imperfections that make things look more real. I think the clouds need work in PS too, Terragen always teems to make the sky a bit weird in my eyes

Heh very nice. In fact I like it...
