My dad loves Norton [Internet Security/Firewall Question]

My dad is very paranoid about internet security and firewalls. He doesn't believe that one you can get for free will work/isn't a virus/can be better than one you pay for. We have 3 computers in the house, and the two with internet access have Norton Internet Security/Firewalls on them. I have been told (by Tifers) Norton eats memory. Also that free ones can be just as good or better. The third computer could be connected to the internet, (we have wifi in the house) but my dad (and I) don't want to connect it without a firewall/virus scanner on it; but I'm willing to use a good free/cheap one whereas he isn't.

 

 

 

So good suggestions for free/cheapish firewalls/internet security suites you can get? Also ways to persuade my dad to buy/download them and actually use them on the third computer?

 

 

 

I think this may not be the only reason he won't connect it to the interwebz though... My brother has had a history of issues with the internet... :?

Notice that AVIRA (free) scores consistently high for speed and detection rating. If you don't mind paying NOD32 is also a good AV package.

NOD2's not going to work as it's about $90... Now I see why we have Norton even though it's insanely annoying... It's apparently almost as good as NOD2 but almost half the price.

 

 

 

Also, I'm not sure, how is AVIRA free? When I go to the website, it says it's 39.95 euros... Which also doesn't really help me as I'd use USD... Am I looking at the wrong thing? I'm looking at the Premium Security Suite, http://www.avira.com/en/products/avira_ ... suite.html

I don't know where you got that price for NOD32, I bought it for $35.

 

 

 

Anyway, if your father thinks paid antiviruses are better, then get him the Kaspersky Internet Security suite, even if it's expensive, it doesn't cost as much as Norton (which is $110 where I live).

Norton's firewall sucks compared to ZoneAlarm Pro (and Free) Edition, both in terms of "user involvement" and "rule setup" for access. TBH, your dad would make a very smart choice to rip out Norton's and put in ZoneAlarm. :geek:

avira antivir personal and comodo firewall pro (both 100% free) have been keeping me safe without any problems. as long as these products continue, or similar free products continue im never paying for a firewall or anti-virus program.

I have always been safe with ZA and AVG free, infact the only reason I am using McAfee now is because I got 15 months free and I do not want to waste the opportunity for free use of a paying firewall/AV :P

AVG free and zonealarm are great. If your dad doesn't believe in free stuff, just let him pay for AVG and zonealarm. Better off paying for a good one than a crappy one.

Avira offers much better protection than AVG now, especially since AVG 8 was released.

thats exactly what i found. when i switched to avira 3 months ago it found several viruses that avg hadn't in its countless scans.

What's worse is that AVG acts like the RuneScape Official Client is a virus, even though it is not. Why? Because AVG decided to basically blacklist anything that is packed in a UPX format. :(

 

 

 

TBH, I find that rather unprofessional (and evil) of AVG... Further, companies that start doing that aren't worth putting any money into. So, go with NOD32/Avira/Avast!/Kaspersky, as you'll be better off with them... Norton/McAfee/AVG all [bleep]ing suck. :geek:

Sometimes, most free anti-malware programs will have tools that you can only use once you've paid and registered.
