Best to fight mages with Protect from Mage, though I havent tried Dragonhide yet. You need at least one empty inventory space at the end of each level for twigs, unless you stay at the first level. I had previously remembered that the monsters took up the entire hallway, so I had assumed they were only actually one space large...
